WORK AREA

å Keep area clean, free of clutter and lit. Cluttered and dark work areas can cause accidents.

å Do not use your band saw where there is a risk of causing a fire or an explosion; e.g. in the presence of flammable liquids, gasses, or dust. Power tools create sparks, which may ignite the dust or fumes.

å Keep children and bystanders away while operating a band saw. Distractions can cause you to lose control, so visitors should remain at a safe distance from the work area.

å Be alert of your surroundings. Using band in confined work areas may put you dangerously close to cutting tools and rotating parts.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

å WARNING! Always check to ensure the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate.

å Do not abuse the cord. Never pull tool cords from the receptacle. Keep power cords away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords may cause a fire and increase the risk of electric shock.

å Grounded tools must be plugged into an outlet properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances. Never remove the grounding prong or modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs. This unit is equipped with a 3-prong (grounded) plug for your protection against shock hazards and should be plugged directly into a properly grounded 3-prong receptacle. Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded.

å Extension Cord Use. A. Use only ‘Listed’ extension cords. If used outdoors, they must be marked “For Outdoor Use.” Those cords having 3-prong grounding type plugs and mating receptacles are to be used with grounded tools. B. Replace damaged or worn cords immediately. C. Check the name plate rating of your tool. Use of improper size or of extension cord may cause unsafe or inefficient operation of your tool. Be sure your extension cord is rated to allow sufficient current flow to the motor. For the proper wire gauge for your tool, see chart.

å Ground fault circuit interrupters. If work area is not equipped with a permanently installed Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlet (GFCI), use a plug-in GFCI between power tool or extension cord and power receptacle.

å Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increase risk of electric shock if your body is grounded. PERSONAL SAFETY

å Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.

å Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing, dangling objects, or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry or long hair can be caught in moving parts. Air vents often cover moving parts and should be avoided.

å Use safety apparel and equipment. Use safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields which comply with current national standards, or when needed, a face shield. Use as dust mask in dusty work conditions. This applies to all persons in the work area. Also use non-skid safety , hardhat, gloves, dust collection systems, and hearing protection when appropriate.

å Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before plugging tool into power outlet. In the event of a power failure, while a tool is being used, turn the switch off to prevent surprise starting when power is restored.

å Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.

å Be especially careful to keep fingers and hands out of path of blade when using band saw in a vertical position.

å Remove adjusting keys or before connecting to the power supply or turning on the tool. A or key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in personal injury. TOOL USE AND CARE

å Do not the tool. Band saws do a better and safer job when used in the manner for which they are designed. Plan your work, and use the correct tool for the job.

Page 4 of 16 å Never use a tool with a malfunctioning switch. Any band saw that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired by an authorized service representative before using.

å Disconnect power from band saw and place the switch in the locked or off position before servicing, adjusting, installing accessories or attachments, or storing. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.

å Secure work with clamps or a vise instead of your hand to hold work when practical. This safety precaution allows for proper tool operation using both hands.

å Store idle band saw. When not in use, store the band saw in a dry, secure place out of the reach of children. Inspect tools for good working condition prior to storage and before re-use.

å Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool may create a risk of injury when used on another tool.

å Never stand on band saw. Serious injury could occur if the band saw is tipped or if the cutting blade is accidentally contacted.

å Keep guards in place and in working order.

å Before operating the band saw EACH TIME, check for alignment of moving parts; binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced.

å Never leave saw running unattended.

å When moving the saw, ALWAYS have the head lowered to the horizontal position. ASSEMBLY — Refer to PARTS LIST Part Number

A 1/3 or 1/2 HP motor split phase or capacitor start is recommended for best economical performance. Counterclockwise is required. Note that rotation can be reversed by following the directions given on the terminal or nameplate. 1. Assemble the motor mounting plate (#84) to the head (#81) using the long bolt (#98). Note that the flat side of the plate faces up. 2. Assemble the guard plate (#59) to the head using the (#83), lock washer (#8) and the carriage bolt (#12). Washer (#8) and wing nut are used to secure the motor mounting plate to the guard plate through the slotted hole in the guard plate. These components also serve to position and lock the motor in place or properly adjust belt speed. 3. Place the spacer over the long bolt and secure it with the nut. 4. Secure the motor (#85) to the motor mounting plate with the four bolts (#1) and nuts (#12). Note that the motor shaft (#85) is placed through the large opening in the guard plate and must be parallel with the drive shaft (#94). 5. Assemble the motor (#86), the smaller of the two provided to the motor shaft (#85). Note the larger diameter must be closest to the motor. Do not tighten the set screw (#20). 6. Assemble the drive pulley (#86), the larger of the two provided, to the protruding drive shaft (#94). Note the smaller diameter must be closest to the bearing (#72). Do not tighten the set screw (#101-1). 7. Place the belt (#112) into one of the pulley (#101) and the other end into the respective grooves of the second pulley. 8. Line up the belt and both pulleys such that the belt is running parallel in the pulley grooves. Page 5 of 16 9. Tighten the set screws of both pulleys in this position. 10. Place the belt into proper pulley combination for proper blade speed. See material cutting chart. 11. Adjust the position of the motor to obtain approximately 1/2" depression in the belt when applying pressure with your thumb. 12. Tighten the head screw (#83) holding the motor mounting plate to the guard plate. 13. Connect the electrical harness (#330) to the motor terminal box (#327). The motor should be protected with a circuit breaker with a rated amperage slightly greater than the full-load amperage of the motor.

WORK SETUP NOTE: Make sure the switch is in the OFF position and the saw is unplugged. 1. Raise the saw head (#81) to vertical position. 2. Open vise (#302) to accept the piece to be cut by rotating the (#28) at the end of the base. 3. Place workpiece on saw bed. If the piece is long support the end. 4. workpiece securely in vise.

WORK STOP ADJUSTMENT NOTE: Make sure the switch is in the OFF position and the saw is unplugged. 1. Loosen the thumb screw (#302) holding the work stop casting to the shaft (#28). 2. Adjust the work stop casting to the desired length position. 3. Rotate the work stop to as close to the bottom of the cut as possible. 4. Tighten thumb screw. 5. Do not allow the blade (#113) to rest on the work while the motor is shut off.

BLADE SPEEDS When using your band saw always change the blade speed to best suit the material being cut. The material cutting chart gives suggested settings for several materials:

Aluminum plastic 60 Large Small BLADE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL Be sure the blade is assembled to the pulleys so that the vertical edge engages the workpiece first.

Page 6 of 16 CAUTION: NEVER OPERATE SAW WITHOUT BLADE GUARDS IN PLACE. Be sure the blade is not in contact with the workpiece when the motor is started. First start the motor, allow the saw to come to full speed, then begin the cut by letting the head down slowly onto the work. DO NOT DROP OR FORCE THE SAW HEAD. Let the weight of the saw head provide the cutting force. The saw automatically shuts off the end of the cut.

BLADE SELECTION AN 8 TPI, general-use blade is furnished with this metal cutting band saw. Additional in 4-, 6-, 8- and 10-tooth sizes are available. The choice of the blade pitch is governed by the thickness of the work to be cut; the thinner the workpiece, the more teeth recommended. A minimum of three teeth should engage the workpiece at all times for proper cutting. If the teeth of the blade are so far apart that they straddle the work, severe damage to the workpiece and to the blade can result.

CHANGING BLADE NOTE: Make sure the switch is in the OFF position and the saw is unplugged. Raise saw head to vertical position and open the blade guards. Loosen tension screw knob (#79) sufficiently to allow the saw blade to slip off the . Install the new blade with teeth slanting toward the motor as follows: 1. Place the blade in between each of the guide bearings. 2. Slip the blade around the motor pulley (bottom) with the left hand and hold in position. 3. Hold the blade taut against the motor pulley by pulling the blade upward with the right hand which is placed at the top of the blade. 4. Remove left hand from bottom pulley and place it at the top side of the blade to continue pulling upward on the blade. 5. Remove right hand from blade and adjust the position of the top pulley to permit left hand to slip the blade around the pulley. 6. Adjust the blade tension knob clockwise until it is tight enough so no blade slippage occurs. Do not over tighten. 7. Replace the blade guards. 8. Place 2-3 drops of oil on the blade.

BLADE GUIDE BEARING ADJUSTMENT

ATTENTION: This is the most important adjustment on your saw. It is impossible to get satisfactory work from your saw if the blade guides are not properly adjusted. The blade guide is depending on your metal. Cutting Band Saws are adjusted and power tested with several test cuts before leaving the factory to insure proper setting. The need for adjustment should rarely occur when the saw is used properly. If the guides do get out of adjustment, it is extremely important to readjust immediately. If proper adjustment is not maintained, the blade will not cut straight, and if the situation is not corrected it will cause serious blade damage. Because guide adjustment is a critical factor in the performance of your saw, it is always best to try a new blade to see if this will correct poor cutting before beginning to adjust. If a blade becomes dull on one side sooner than the other, for example, it will begin cutting crooked. A blade change will Page 7 of 16 correct this problem — the guide adjustment will not. If a new blade does not correct the problem, check the blade and guides for proper spacing. NOTE: There should be from 000 (just touching) to 001 clearance between the blade and guide bearings. To obtain this clearance adjust as follows: NOTE: Make sure the switch is in the OFF position and the saw is unplugged. 1. The inner guide bearing is fixed and cannot be adjusted. 2. The outer guide bearing is mounted to an eccentric bushing and can be adjusted. 3. Loosen the nut while holding the bolt with an Allen wrench. 4. Position the eccentric by turning the bolt to the desired position of clearance. 5. Tighten the nut. 6. Adjust the second blade guide bearing in the same manner.

ADJUSTING BLADE TENSION NOTE: Make sure the switch is in the OFF position and the saw is unplugged. 1. Press the blade lightly with left hand, aligning the rear blade against the flange of the blade wheel and test the blade tension. 2. Adjust the blade tension adjustable knob with the right hand until the blade obtains the proper tension.

ADJUSTING THE BLADE TRACKING This adjusting has been completed and tested at the factory. The need for adjustments should rarely occur when the saw is used properly. If the tracking goes out of adjustment, proper blade readjustment is listed below:

CUTTING Close switch, letting the head down slowly onto the work. Do not drop or force. Let the weight of the saw head provide the cutting force. The saw automatically shuts off at end of the cut. Method of adjusting blade: A. Loosen the screw #11. B. Adjust the blade adjustable seat (#64) to make the blade vertical to bed. C. Place a on the bed to check if the blade is vertical, if not, repeat the process A to C. D. Tighten the screw (#11).

TELL TALE CHIPS Chips are the best indicator of correct feed force. Monitor chip debris and adjust feed accordingly. If you see thin or powdered chips, increase feed rate or reduce band speed.

Burned heavy

Chips: Reduce feed rate and/or band speed.

Curly silvery and warm chips: Optimum feed rate and band speed.

MAINTENANCE

CAUTION: MAKE CERTAIN THE BAND SAW IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE POWER SOURCE BEFORE ATTEMTING TO SERVICE OR REMOVE ANY COMPONENT!

LUBRICATION Lubricate the following components using SAE-30 oil as noted. 1. Ball-bearing: None. 2. Driven pulley bearing: 6-8 drops a week. 3. Vise lead screw: As needed. 4. The drive gears run in an oil bath and will not require a lubricant change more often than once a year, unless the lubricant is accidentally contaminated or a leak occurs because of improper replacement of the gearbox cover. During the first few days of operation, the worm gear drive will run hot. Unless the temperature exceeds 200°F, there is no cause for concern.
