Merry Christmas

WARSOP REMEMBERS This year’s Remembrance Sunday parade was the largest yet with many more people than usual joining us at the War Memorial to pay their respects. Warsop looked magical with the number of poppies on buildings, lamp-posts and trees. So many groups went the extra mile this year, especially our local schools. Special thanks must go to ‘Warsop’s Real Poppy Campaign’ group who have worked tirelessly since 2014 both in raising awareness and much needed funds for our branch. They really pulled out all the stops to make this year so special and the climax of their campaign. We should all be proud of the formations that have made the effort to decorate our Town, bringing our community together. Warsop was really on the map this year, being represented at ’s Games of Remembrance, The Festival of Remembrance at The Royal Albert Hall , Nottingham’s Remembrance event on The Trent Embankment, and also at Tyne Cot Cemetery Belgium.

Branch Chairman, Jason Hood received a fantastic donation from the members of ‘Warsop’s Real Poppy Campaign following the Remembrance Parade.

THE FIGHT FOR A FRACK FREE WARSOP SCAREMONGERING? Scaremongering is a word often used in debate around the subject of fracking when anti-fracking campaigners are trying to raise awareness of the risks and negative impacts which the shale gas industry is likely to bring. One definition of scaremongering is “the spreading of frightening or ominous reports or rumours”. Yes, some of the facts are scary, especially relating to the known Meeting with Ben Bradley MP risks and lack of safeguards in the UK for both public health and our environment, but Frack Free Warsop firmly believe that people On a brighter note, our own MP, Ben Bradley, has been quite should be aware of them, instead of simply being led to believe the vocal in his opposition to the Government’s proposals to change industry and government sound bites, such as “we need the gas”, the planning laws in favour of the shale gas industry. At a recent “we need the jobs”, and “we don’t want to be reliant on Russian meeting between Ben Bradley MP, Frack Free Warsop and Warsop gas”, statements which are rarely backed up with evidence on what Parish Councillor Wayne Williamson-Cooper, Mr Bradley commented: could actually be involved in achieving those things through shale "Communities should have a say on what development takes gas development, such as 6000 plus wells; air pollution; water place in their back yard, particularly with fracking where there are contamination; earthquakes, etc. environmental concerns as well. It would be wrong to take that away Indeed, the Government report, “Planning Guidance on Fracking” from local people." by the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee, published after the Government consultation into whether the existing planning regime dealing with fracking is “fit for purpose”, highlights a number of concerns within the planning system – worryingly, this is our first line of defence against the known risks of this industry! As scaremongers go, though, the biggest by far is Claire Perry herself. As Minister of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, she is the main driving force behind the push for shale gas. Even though she is in command of the facts of the UK gas supply situation, she has recently made two quite contradictory statements on Russian gas: “We are in no way reliant on Russian gas despite what the Russians would have you believe,” but when it suited her argument, we got: “…do we actually want to be reliant on Mr Putin for our gas supply?” – so, exactly who is scaremongering? Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much research to find that there is a lot of influence by oil and gas corporations and other interested players, whilst Government and industry is side-lining the concerns of the public who will have to live with the consequences of this industry. • A recent Guardian piece raised the issue of Oil Industry donations to the Tory party under of over £390,000. • A judicial review has been requested into the Judge who sentenced three fracking protestors to jail after it was revealed his family has links to the Oil and Gas Industry. The three were recently released by the Court of Appeal who found their sentences to be “manifestly excessive”. • National Planning Policy Framework 2018 recommends that Ben Bradley MP Minerals Authorities “recognise the benefits of “unconventional hydrocarbons and put in place “policies to facilitate their exploration Welcomes Wages Rising and extraction”. I am of their exciting adventures. This is a diary entry from one of the looking forward to a really exciting year with year 4! children about their day: Thank you Miss Dearden Dear Diary, Hi, what are you up to? I’m very sorry for not filling you in sooner. I’ve had an amazing trip to Nottingham. I could of brought you with me but I’ve been very excited and I completely forgot. All right now I’m going to tell you all about my brilliant trip. First, we went to Nottingham Caves and we saw some rough, crumbled sandstone with pick axe marks in it. Then we went down some spiral, steep, slippy stairs with an old, dusty metal handrail. But wait there’s more to come! After that, we went to Robin Hood Experience. When we got there, we saw Robin Hood, Maid Marion, Maid Marion’s mum and Friar Tuck. Then Robin said, “Hello my outlaws,” and we said, “Hello,” back. Next, we went inside. One group went to listen to some of the models but my favourite part was listening to Robin tell his exciting stories. So diary now you know why I said I’ve been very busy don’t you? But now diary I’ve got to go but I will write again soon. From your best friend Darcy - Aged 8 International Artist Day for Sherwood Sherwood Junior decided to celebrate International Artist Day 2018 by inviting a local artist into school for the day. Chris Rumsey is an amateur potter who makes handmade ceramic lamps. The lamps not traditional with a base and shade, but pottery vessels with holes that contains a light fitting or t-light. The holes allow light to spill out from the lamp and fall onto the surfaces around it. The position of the lamp alters the way light falls onto walls and ceilings. The effect can create a really magical atmosphere in any room. You won't find anything similar in the high street and no two lamps he makes are ever the same. Chris kindly joined Sherwood for the day and gave a demonstration on how to make a lamp then the children had a great time creating their very own.
