THE STORY

The plot of "NAUGHTY MARIETTA" is based on the life of a girl of title and noble birth, set in New Orleans in the year 1780. Marietta leaves the convent in order to see the world and comes to America with a group of "Casquette girls," sent by the King of France to be married to Louisiana planters. In this new land she falls under the protection of Cap- tain Ricardo, an officer in pursuit of a troublesome pirate. Their friendship seems to be entirely platonic; Marietta vowing, moreover, that she will give her heart only to him who can complete her fragmentary dream melody.

She persuades Ricardo to obtain a boy's disguise and Rudolfo, a marionette showman, passes her off as his son. In the Marionette Theater, the naughty Marietta speedily proves the undoing of Rudolfo as she cannot or will not pull the wires properly. In despair he turns to Ricardo, likewise helpless, but is sure of one thing, that he does not love the teasing girl.

Etienne has been strutting about town secure in his incognito: No one knows that he is the pirate "Bras Pique," certainly not Ricardo. All the town turns out for the quadroon ball at the Jeunesse Doree Club, including the irrepressible Marietta: Etienne offers to auction his quadroon slave, Adah, so that he can marry Marietta.

Captain Ricardo buys Adah to free her: Marietta, misinterpreting his action, tells Etienne she will wed him. Adah prevents this by revealing the pirate's real identity to Ricardo. The Lieutenant-Governor, however, will not arrest Etienne since he is his own son. The pirate makes his exit and when Marietta discovers that Ricardo has completed her dream melody, they confess their love. SYNOPSIS OF SCENES AND MUSICAL NUMBERS
