You as our leaders and volunteers, have the vision, the knowledge, the wherewithal and experience to help us pave our way into the future. You are truly our greatest asset today and tomorrow, and we could not accomplish what we do without your support and leadership. I would like to personally welcome you to the 100th Annual Convention of Optimist International. It is an exciting time for Optimists, as we gather here in Canada’s beautiful capital city of Ottawa to launch the celebration of our 100th year and look forward to our next century of bringing out the best in youth, our communities, and ourselves. A pedestrian-friendly city, Ottawa has most of the country’s national museums, great restaurants and a busy shopping district. Most of these attractions are within a 20-minute walk from the convention hotels. We have a full agenda during the next three days, so please take a few minutes to study this program. It includes our meeting agenda, list of workshops, and other important information. One of the most important aspects of our convention, is the level of training and networking opportunities available. Whether it’s District or Club leadership seminars, membership growth workshops, District chair training, or project and fundraising ideas, you’ll find what you are looking for at this convention. We are transforming the way we operate, by continuously improving our ability to bring greater value to the volunteer experience and increase our service to our youth and our communities. Our volunteers have continued to meet the challenges facing us today and to excel. Optimist International should be very proud of where we are today and excited about the new horizons that lay before us. 5 Welcome Optimists to your 100th convention! As an Ottawa native, I am thrilled that you are coming to my city I have called home for most of my life. Other welcome messages will surely expound on the many attractions we have to offer as a national capital and as a uniquely bilingual and multicultural city. Ottawa is part of unceded Algonquin territory and the confluence of two rivers made it a meeting place for centuries before white settlers arrived. Given that Ottawa has been a meeting place since time immemorial, it may therefore not be surprising to learn that even in the realm of Optimism, it sits in two overlapping Districts, the East Ontario District (EOD) and the Central Ontario District (COD): French Clubs are with the EOD while English Clubs are with the COD. It is also interesting to note that while the EOD is part of the St-Lawrence Region, the COD is part of the Great Lakes and Northeast Region. Also, Ottawa is located next to the city of Gatineau, in the province of Quebec, which is part of the West Quebec District (WCD). Indeed, many Gatineau residents work in Ottawa, and Optimists who live in one city sometimes are members of a club in the other city. You might say that, in a very real sense, three Districts and two Regions are welcoming you. Indeed, the host committee had hard-working representatives from all three Districts. We hope that you will find your stay in Ottawa both exciting and fruitful and that this 100th Convention will leave you with indelible memories for years to come! 7 Welcome to Optimist International’s 100th annual convention in the beautiful city of Ottawa! Did you know that Ottawa comes from the Algonquin word adawe that means “to trade”? Trade is a synonym for exchange, and we are here in Ottawa to exchange ideas, fun and our Optimism! We joyfully welcome our members from all over the world, and will make this convention an exciting event taking advantage of the rich content and activities planned to solidify our network of Optimist members. We are so fortunate to have our convention take place in such a historical city. Don’t forget to take a tour of any of the numerous museums and historical sites that are easily accessible from any of the convention venues. This year, the new exhibition format for the Community Involvement Expo is likely to attract many visitors, which will give members the opportunity to showcase their projects and imagine even bigger things for the future! For first timers, don’t forget to attend your orientation session, as there will be a lot of excitement in the air! During the convention, in addition to the Community Involvement Expo, we are offering several workshops aimed at fostering leadership skills. We also celebrate the arrival of Miss Canada 2018, Maria Giorlando, member of the St. Clair Optimist Club and recognized for her exemplary community involvement, as well as guest speaker and athlete Sébastien Sasseville who will discuss adapting to change. We are confident that this 100th International Convention will remain etched in our memories and are looking forward to beginning the centenary of the best service to Youth organization in the world.

8 Dear Participants, It is a great honor and an immense pride for me to have the opportunity to welcome you in our beautiful Canadian Capital. For the first time in our history we have three Districts to welcome you in Ottawa. To be part of the Host Committee and see how much work and love goes in to the preparation of a Convention was for me a wonderful experience. I had the pleasure of working with dedicated people, lead by our Host Chair Anne Donkers and we have prepared a Convention that I am certain will make history. Being part of the Host Committee has also helped me be even more Optimist Strong as I had the opportunity to prepare the Appreciation luncheon to give thanks to all of you but mostly to our First Lady Dottie for all that you do and all that you are. The Rideau Canal, Byward Market, Parliament Hill, Gatineau Park, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Ride, and the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica are just a few items to put on your ‘bucket list’. Visit the EXPO (formerly called the House of Optimism) and check out the various displays. Check out the many workshops being presented for your benefit to find out HOW to better SERVE more YOUTH in your communities. If this is your FIRST Optimist Convention – Please get up early on Sunday morning, July 8th, at 7:00 AM and join us for an hour to explain how the OI Convention fits together for your needs and explains the “nuts and bolts” of the conference. The Host Area Committee has worked hard to make this Optimist International Convention one to write home about and share with your Optimist friends who were not fortunate enough to attend. 11 MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF OTTAWA

On behalf of Members of Ottawa City Council, it is my distinct pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all those participating in the 100th Annual Optimist International Convention, taking place at the Shaw Centre from July 7th to 10th 2018. I am equally delighted that Ottawa has been selected as the host venue for this annual meeting marking a century of dedication and benevolent work by Optimist members worldwide. The Convention also provides a valuable forum for delegates to network, partake in training opportunities, tour the exhibit hall, and recognize members for their community service through awards presentations. As Head of Council, I want also to acknowledge the Ottawa Host Area Committee, speakers, facilitators, exhibitors, and sponsors for dedicating efforts, talents, expertise, services and resources to the successful organization of this annual gathering of international scope. As Mayor of the host city, I invite visitors to explore the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in the Heritage Building of City Hall, as well as the revitalized Lansdowne park, its restored heritage pavilions, and the new TD Place, home of the Ottawa REDBLACKS CFL team, and Ottawa Fury FC United Soccer League team. Tourists will want also to view the National Arts Centre, and its spectacular new façade. The newly expanded Ottawa Art Gallery, which opened its doors just last spring, will amaze visitors with captivating works by the Group of Seven. Allow me to offer my best wishes to the participants for a productive and rewarding assembly, as well as to the visitors for a most enjoyable stay in Ottawa.

Registration not required. Featured in this area are exhibitors of fundraising products, endorsed organizations, displays of Optimist International Club Projects, Optimist Suppliers Shumsky and Ansell’s and a variety of other select vendors. All vendors will be allowed to sell their products. Drawings will be held at the end of the last day. Winners will be contacted to retrieve their prize. There will be other prizes to win, so be sure to visit the Community Involvement Expo daily and join in on the fun!

District Hospitality All Districts are invited to post information regarding their hospitality suite on a special bulletin board located in the exhibit hall.
