Managing a chronic medical condition while homeless can be an overwhelming battle. For three years, Ted struggled to keep his epilepsy medicine from getting lost or stolen, and more often than he’d like to remember his seizures sent him crash-landing onto the “cement pillow” of Portland’s streets.

Today, thanks to his team at JOIN, Ted can focus on his health from the safety and comfort of his own home. He’s thrilled to be able to have a place where he can plug in a blender and learn about nutrition! For the first time in years, Ted is focused on more than just surviving– he is thriving.

7 Financial Information “If I could tell people one thing about homeless people, it’s that we aren’t bad people. We are not defined by how much money we have or by our past. The other homeless people that I met when we were out there were so gen- erous. They would give me or my kids their last dime - more so than any millionaire.”

From a mom: “Thank you for inviting us to the back to school party. It was so sweet. The kids love their new supplies and are ready for school. My husband and I are working all we can- when work calls we have to go in order to make ends meet and we still need all the help we can get. I’m so grateful for all JOIN’s help today because this made back-to- school exciting rather than a worry.”

Alicia was nervous before her carpal tunnel surgery, so Retention Worker Kerestin joined Alica’s husband at her bedside for support. Alicia wasn’t allowed to drink anything, so they all shared a pack of salivating lemon swabs, which made “us drool all over our- selves” and helped laugh away the nerves.

Rory and Marissa were homeless and sleep- ing in a car with their two small children when JOIN’s Outreach Worker Mike met the family. Mike knew that Rory and Marissa would make great tenants, so he introduced them to a property management company that JOIN has worked with for over 10 years. By sharing his faith in the family and committing JOIN’s sup- port as they settled into their new apartment, Mike was able to help open the doors to home for this family.

When they moved into their new apartment, the very first thing Rory did was to spill all his son’s toys onto the empty living room floor and say to his son, “Okay, let’s just play.” The family never had the space to play in their cramped car. Rory & Marissa
