Remember, you have until noon on Friday, 24th, to get your vote in. Sister School exchange- Baeksin Middle School Mrs Harvey, Mrs Howard and ten students from MMI arrived home from Korea last weekend. From all accounts, the students had an amazing learning and cultural experience. Spending 10 days with another family, in another country, who speak another language was a brave and adventurous thing to do. When Mrs Howard returns to school (she is currently in China with Whaea Lisa, meeting some potential international students and visiting schools), we will have a presentation from the group in our assembly. We look forward to seeing their pictures and hearing about their experiences. Classrooms It has been great to wander through our classrooms and see the great teaching and learning taking place across the school. We had a visit from a group of beginning teachers last week, who are all employed in schools in the Mount Maunganui/Tauranga region. Their feedback was that our students and staff are lucky to learn and teach in such lovely, well-resourced classrooms. At MMI, we are proud to prioritise quality learning spaces, resources and furniture for our students. I always feel proud when I show visitors around the school about how our classrooms are presented and the pride that our students show in their learning environments. Next term, we expect to start a renovation project in our specialist classrooms. The Dance and Drama and Foods rooms will be renovated and modernised first. There will be more information about how we will manage this project, when dates are finalised. Break Times Class competitions have started at lunch time. It is neat to see students outside playing and refereeing ultimate frisbee, and the competitive nature, fair play and enthusiasm shown by our class teams. Getting active at break times is to be encouraged. Phones at school You may have seen reports in the media lately, about cell phones at school. At MMI, we ask students who have cell phones, to hand them in to the class teacher at the start of each day. Phones are kept in a safe place and then handed back to their owners at the end of the day. We believe that it is important for students to be active, and to interact face to face during their learning and during break times. We are also dealing with increasing issues around online bullying and inappropriate communication that often happens outside of school, but is brought to our attention when problems flare up. Emerging adolescents are impulsive and often do not have the maturity or wisdom to understand the implications of what they say/post on phones and online platforms. It is often easier to say something via text message or on snap chat, however once these conversations are had, they cannot be taken back and there is significant risk of them being shared, copied or misinterpreted. If your child does have a phone, we encourage you to monitor their communication and to limit their access to it. Real conversations are much better ways of working through challenges, responding to anxiety and having fun with your family and friends. Have a great week everyone. Six of the seven Arataki Omanu Group members, who are attending the Jamboree, are all students of MMI and one ex student who now attends Mt Maunganui College. The jamboree runs over 10 days, costs $1,500.00 per scout and hosts over 4000 scouts from all over NZ. Scouts will test their personal limits, work together as a team, develop their critical thinking, survival skills, and independence throughout the camp. They would really love your support. ELITE INDOOR BOWLS On Friday 17th May, sixteen, year 7 and 8 students, entered into the elite bowls competition, which was held at Tauranga Intermediate. Many of our bowlers were first timers, but they were keen to give it a go. The students represented the school beautifully and demonstrated great sportsmanship and camaraderie. Whilst we didn’t bring back any medals, every team won many of the 5 games that they played. It was a great day out and a fabulous beginning to our bowling year.
