Introduction: Sexual Magic and Social Responsibility Dion Fortune is a fascinating and neglected figure of 20th century occultism. In her lifetime, she published a prodigious number of books and articles on both occult and non-occult matters, and authored a number of novels. A full exploration of her work would take up many more pages that I have at my disposal, so I have limited myself to what I believe to be the most unique aspect of her work and the one which has the most significance for the modern study of Esotericism: her approach to sexual magic. -

Blood Rituals from Art to Murder
The Sacrificial Aesthetic: Blood Rituals from Art to Murder Dawn Perlmutter Department of Fine Arts Cheyney University of Pennsylvania Cheyney PA 19319-0200 [email protected] [Ed. note 2/2017: Many of the links in this article have become invalid and been removed] The concept of the “sacrificial esthetic” introduced in Eric Gans’s Chronicle No. 184 entitled “Sacrificing Culture” describes a situation in which aesthetic forms remain sacrificial but have evolved from a necessary feature of social organization to a psychological element of the human condition. Gans concludes that art’s sacrificial esthetic is essentially exhausted as a creative force and argues that the future lies with simulations, virtual realities in which the spectator plays a partially interactive role. His most significant claim is that “This end of the ability of the esthetic to discriminate between the sacrificial and the antisacrificial is not the end of art. On the contrary, it liberates the esthetic from the ethical end of justifying sacrifice.” The consequence of the liberation of the ethical justification of sacrifice is the main concern of this essay. Throughout the history of art we have encountered images of blood, from the representations of wounded animals in the cave paintings of Lascaux through century after century of brutal Biblical images, through history paintings depicting scenes of war, up through the many films of war, horror, and violence. Blood is now off the canvas, off the screen and sometimes literally in your face. It is no coincidence that this substance has intrigued artists throughout history. Blood is fascinating; it simultaneously represents purity and impurity, the sacred and the profane, life and death. -

Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Oral Sex Among Rural and Urban Malawian Men
Kerwin et al. 2012 Prevalence of and Factors Associated with Oral Sex among Rural and Urban Malawian Men Jason Kerwin * Department of Economics, University of Michigan Rebecca Thornton Department of Economics, University of Michigan Sallie Foley Graduate School of Social Work, University of Michigan March 2012 ABSTRACT Despite medical evidence that female-to-male oral sex carries a much lower risk of HIV transmission than unprotected vaginal intercourse, there has been little research on the practice of fellatio in Africa. We use a sample of 1216 men in rural Malawi and 1537 uncircumcised men in urban Malawi to examine the prevalence of oral sex. While 97 percent of the rural sample and 87 percent of the urban sample reported having had vaginal sex just 2 percent and 12 percent respectively said they had ever received oral sex. Only half of the rural sample, and less than three quarters of the urban sample, reported having heard of oral sex. We find that education and condom use predict oral sex knowledge; in contrast, media exposure and beliefs about HIV do not significantly predict knowledge about oral sex after controlling for other confounding factors. The large gap between sexual activity and oral sex prevalence implies substantial scope for fellatio as another safer sex strategy in Malawi and potentially in other African countries as well. * Corresponding author: Thornton, Department of Economics, 611 Tappan St., Ann Arbor, MI, 48109.
