How to attach a Simple Bias Edge

This is a quick tutorial on how to attach a bias binding edge, like the one shown above on our Aiden & Ava bibs. This is also a great way to finish off any bib, pockets, a and many other sewn items. You will need: A project that you would like to finish off with the bias edge. 1 1/2" wide bias strips in the combined length needed for your project. It doesn't have to be in one piece, we will show you how to piece them together. Clover brand 3/4” bias tape maker , matching and your trusty machine

A straw needle & some Hand Quilting thread for hand basting

1

Lets Get Started: 1. Place 2 strips right sides together on a 45-degree angle and in place. 2. with 1/4” across pinned edge

3. down to a 1/8” seam and then press the seams open

4. Repeat this process until you have pieced together enough strips to equal your desired length.

2

5. Grab the 3/4” Clover bias tape maker, position the red plastic piece at the top and feed one end of your continuous bias strip into the wide end opening with all of the seams on top. Stop once there is about 1.5” sticking out of the small opening side. TIP: If you have any trouble feeding the strip into the tool, use a pin to along the top opening to push it through.

6. Pin the creases the tape maker has made into place and press. Press on high heat with a little steam.

7. Repeat steps 5 & 6 along the entire continuous bias strip. 8. Fold the bias strip in half inwards, aligning the 2 folds on top of each other with the top fold sitting 1/16” inside the bottom one (this ensures that one side of the bias is 1/16” wider than the other side). Fold along the entire strip, then press into place.

9. Begin at your starting point, this will differ depending on your project. and start wrapping the bias around the raw edge. Make sure the side of the fold that is 1/16” wider is placed on the back side. Using a straw needle and a strand of hand quilting thread, make large basting stitches to hold the bias into place. Continue wrapping and stitching into place until you reach your ending point. Cut the bias strip off at the edge. Refer to the 4 pics below on our bib. Note: If your wanting to pin the bias into place instead of hand basting, please don't. The hand work only takes a few minutes and the results are so much better!

10. With the right side you, machine stitch the bias into place with matching thread. Align your stitching directly with the front outside edge of the bias.

5

Depending on what you are making you may attach and finish the bias edge in one continuous piece or in several different pieces. If you are making a simpler style bib where this edge will also be your ties, you will want to do the following. Attach, baste and stitch bias into place, creating the neck tie at the same time. Start and end with a 12” length of bias that is not wrapped around your bib edge (the rest of the bias will be wrapped around the bib, just not at the beginning and end for the ties). Tie a small knot as close as you can to the ends of the neck tie you just created.

Have fun with this method and create bibs easily in any shape that you like, with a fantastic easy to make edge that looks very professional.
