FAMOUS, BEAUTIFUL WINE REGION RIOJA DOCA IN 3 PARTS PART 3:

rioja alta - the largest and most diverse sub region text och photo: susanne berglund krantz

The Consejo Regulador exam is getting closer and today it was time to visit the third sub region, Rioja Alta, to conclude our education. As usual, I began my morning with a café con leche and a tuna ish sandwich at my favorite café on the street below my hotel. To top things of, I even spoil myself with a little tortilla de patata and secretly listen in on all the chitchat going on around me.

Later on, our bus heads west to- wards Haro, where we will visit Ramón Bilbao, Bodega Lacuesta and an unusual tasting experience at R. Lopez de Heredia. Again, the journey takes us through Rioja’s beautiful landscape of mountains and valleys, where you sometimes even get a glimpse of the Ebro and its tributaries.

RIOJA ALTA ”Rioja Alta” means ”High Rioja” in English, but not because it the mountaintops, rather because the region stretches out to the north towards the Ebro’s end. Or as the locals say, ”he Ebro is born in the mountains and dies in the Mediter- ranean.” Poetic, but also true. his sub region’s 25,500 ha makes it the largest of the three and comprises 42% of DOCa Rioja’s total wine- growing area. he largest portion of vineyards is located on the south side of the river. he climate is gen- erally milder in Alta compared with the other sub regions and is afect- ed by both Atlantic and prevailing continental climate conditions. Besides Logroño, the city of Haro is well worth visiting. The old town is illed with many winding streets and dead-ends which house some amaz- ing hole-in-the-wall tapas restaurants. The classic meeting place is the city’s beautiful town square where the resi- dents congregate morning to evening and converse with one another. There are many good Rioja wines in Systembolaget’s assortment that can be ordered; whites, reds and rosé wines from both traditional and mod- ern styles. It could be interesting to order a few of each and compare the traditional vs. the modern. Have fun and good luck!

marchesi antinori TEXT:JAN HOLMSTRÖM

Marchesi Antinori have grown and sold wine since 1385. Today, they are one of the oldest and most powerful wine families in the world, and their signiicance for Italien wines cannot be put into words. Antinori is the largest and most quality-aware Italy has to ofer.

has a responsibility to create great wines in lots of other places than just in Italy. ”We have shown that it is possible to make internationally renowned wines while still retaining the or- igin’s characteristics, whether it be in Tuscany or Umbria. So why shouldn’t that concept work in oth- er places around the world?” he Antinori family are well aware that labor-intensive quality work is required if their vision is to be fulilled. here are no shortcuts or hacks in achieving recognition and respect. Additionally, constant cre- ativity and new ways of thinking have to be added into the mix in order to reach their goals. Tignanello I a prime example. he family broke some taboos in Chi- anti and created an entirely new trend. Tignanello is made with grapes from individual vineyards, was the irst Sangiovese wine aged in oak barrels, and didn’t contain the obligatory white grapes, but rather used some cabernet sauvi- gnon and , grapes from Bordeaux. An important aspect of this sto- ry is that Piere Antinori, through relatives, also had a hand in other enormous successes that Sassicaia crated in Bolgheri, by the Tuscan coast. Based entirely on French grapes, Sassicaia obviously led to a positive development for the lag ship Tignanello. Italy is home Marchesi Antinori, and it is there that the Italian fam- ily business has its roots and oper- ations, even though their interests span the globe. >>>

Distillation, or rather double distillation as imposed by AOC law, is a crucial part of Cognac-making. At CAMUS, we choose to retain some of the lees to reveal the typical char- acteristics of each eau-de-vie and terroir. This intricate pro- cess is continuously scrutinized by the Cellar Master Patrick Léger, whose subtle nose and skills guarantee the distinc- tive aromas and taste of CAMUS’ Cognac style. All CAMUS Cognacs are aged in small French ine to medi- um-grained oak barrels which are carefully chosen to re- spect the character of the original eaux-de-vie and achieve a perfect balance with light tannin content, procuring their inimitable roundness and aromatic qualities. Under the careful guidance of Patrick Léger, cooperages Camus works with, make sure that our barrels are heated and medium toasted according to very strict speciications. The desired result is a lighter Cognac which reveals all the aromatic po- tential of the fruit without being over powered by the oak.

FINE WINE & SPIRITS AUCTION 12TH – 14TH DECEMBER! BY SÖREN NYLUND, AUTHORIZED VALUER FOR FINE WINE & SPIRITS AND OTHER ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Welcome to the inal auction of the year. This eighth auction of the year is also the year’s largest, with around diverse 800 objects. Pretty much every corner of the wine world and the most inluential and famous regions will be represented. Classic wines from renowned vintages and noble, long-time aged distilled items will all go under the club, but also lighter spirits whose drops haven’t even seen the inside of a barrel.

There is cognac and port from days long gone, before phyl- ies, whose souls and bodies cannot be recreated. In other loxera ravaged so many European vineyards. There will words, historic items and possible new such ones, that will also be some historic whiskeys from long closed distiller- participate in this year’s inal auction.

WEBAUCTION SPECIAL

RED WINES FROM FRANCE: BORDEAUX & BOURGOGNE A few mixed lots start the auction’s second day. One exam- ple is a series of eleven Mouton Rothschild vintages from 1976 till 1997, followed by several bottles from 1948 from the same property. Not much was expected from this vin- tage during the cold and rainy June, but the weather pat- terns changed to warm and dry, lending the perfect condi- tions for grape development and ripening. The harvest was relatively small and is characterized by hard tannins and the long time it took share its elegance. Unfortunately, the 1948 landed in between the famous 1947 and 1949 vintag- es. Otherwise, experts would have named the 1948 vintage more in terms of a ”classic.” From the complete case wines, which make up an unusu- ally large group in this December auction, there are items like Vieux Château Certan 1982 & 1986. Mouton from 1983, Conseillante and Palmer 1986, La Fleur-Pétrus 1989 & 2008, Lynch-Bages and Talbot 1995, Kirwan 1996, Baron Pichon Longueville 1998, Gruaud Larose 1999, Pontet Canet 2003 and Mouton 2006, and many others…

WHITE WINES The auction will take place over three days, from the 12th to the 14th of December, with white wines beginning on the 12th. Salon in magnums from 1988, Selosse Blanc de Blanc from 1990. There are also magnums of Bolinger RD 1999 and Cristal 2000. In complete original cases, there is Salon 1996 along with Krug and Cuvée Winston Churchill. Among the stills are Musigny Blanc 1990 from Domaine de Vogüe and Le Montrachet 2009 from Domaine Romanée Conti. Sweet wines include items such as complete cases of d’Yquem 1983 and 2001. >>>

Individual bottles include 1989 Haut Brion – magnum. From Bourgogne, we have Romanée Conti 1989 with a wa- ter-damaged label marked by the years. But beauty is found on the inside, as it were. The bottle’s contents were carefully created by the winemaker many times over with courage and through hard work, and bottled for the future. Other objects include Musigny Vielles Vignes from Domaine de Vogüe, and bottles from Henri Pierre Minot, Jean Grivot och Francois Parent are more examples. From a little more north comes Bollinger’s red La Côteaux Enfants, and from a neigh- bor to the south Janasse Cuvée Chaupin.

OTHER RED WINES If Day Two wasn’t robust enough, Day Three proves to be even tougher. Around 400 objects from Italy, Spain, Califor- nia, Australia and other countries, including fortiied wines and various distilled items, all come together on this the i- nal day. From Spain, there is el Pisón, and from Oregon Beaux Fréres in various representations. California is present with Ridge, Saintsbury, Shafer, Blankiet, Dunn and Sine Qua Non. From Australien, many Penfolds varieties, including several Grange and Bin 620. But most of the wines in this group come from Italy. About 80 objects up for bid, including Barolo’s like Gia- como Borgogno and Gaja. Tuscany’s Sassicaia, Ornellaia and Produtti del Barbaresco with varying origins like Asili, Raba- ja, Pora are Montestefano just a few examples.

BONHAMS FINE WINE SALE IN LONDON, THURSDAY 8 DECEMBER OFFERS ALL THE ESSENTIALS FOR THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS DINNER

Champagne is the guaranteed way to start the big day of on the right note and Bonhams December Fine Wine Sale ofers plenty of choice. Among a total of more than 50 lots of izz there are 15 vintages of Dom Pérignon to choose from, of which highlights include a single bottle of 1949 (£350-450), six bottles of 1964 (£1,800-2,200) and a dozen of 1971 (£3,500-4,200). Smoked salmon has become a standard of many Christmas tables and there is a strong argument to be made for pairing it with white Burgun- dy. The sale ofers the chance to acquire a case of the superb Domaine Lelaive Chevalier-Montrachet 2002 (£3,500-4,000) or a Jeroboam of Do- maine Lelaive Bâtard-Montrachet 2002 (£900-1,000). On the other hand, if you feel yet more champagne is called for, the ev- er-fresh Salon Blanc de Blancs 1990 (3,200-3,800 for a case of 6 bottles) or 6 magnums of Pol Roger, Cuvee Winston Churchill 1982 (£3,000-4,000) are more than capable of holding their own against the rich salmon. Bet- ter yet, save yourself the tiresome task of opening all those bottles and plump for a three litre Jeroboam of Louis Roederer Cristal 1999 (£850- 1100) or a six litre Methuselah of Louis Roederer Cristal 1990 (3,200- 3,800). For the turkey or goose, International Head of Bonhams Wine Depart- ment and Master of Wine, Richard Harvey, recommends one of the magniicent mature clarets to be ofered from a private collection that includes six vintages of Pétrus, from 1947 to 1979, and a case of Mouton Rothschild 1982 (£9,000-11,000). A rare lot of four half litre bottles of the Tokaji Aszú Essencia 1963 (£320- 400) represents the perfect match with Christmas pudding; this lush To- kaji demonstrates a concentration and intensity of lavour that is unri- valled. As Richard says, “Christmas is the time to break out something special. We always have a wide range of unusual and distinctive wines in our Decem- ber sale and this year is no exception. It’s diicult to pick a favourite but the two bottles of Meo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée au Cros Parantoux 2001 (£1,300-1,500) and the case of Penfold’s Grange 1986 (£3,500-4,200) would be hard to resist.” For many, Port remains inextricably linked to Christmas day; 6 bottles of Graham’s legendary 1945 vintage (£3,000-4,000) will also be ofered in the December sale.
