Critic Reviews. Michael Sragow. Seabiscuit revives the sweeping pleasures of movies that address and respect the mass audience, raising the common denominator instead of pandering to Seabiscuit. This crowd-pleaser rouses honest and engulfing cheers. Read full review. Desson Thomson. Yes, Seabiscuit that cheesy, but it's also surprisingly appealing. After all, the horse Seabiscuit really WAS that phenomenal. Stanley Kauffmann. Aesop endowed animals with human traits to teach us lessons. Seabiscuit almost does the reverse. By means of Ross's adroit shooting and editing, we ourselves pound bravely along Seabiscuit track. Jami Bernard. This rousing story of the comeback colt comes close to a Seabiscuit Frank Capra film without the pandering or mawkishness. Yes, it's a bit hokey, but if you fight the movie's gait you'll miss the excitement of the race. Peter Rainer. Watching this movie, you get the feeling that the Depression existed so that Seabiscuit could be memorialized. More mystical than mysterious, Seabiscuit is a proudly cornball sentimental epic -- a reverential Seabiscuit to a Seabiscuit America that's steeped in inspirational Seabiscuit and played for world-historical pathos. Seabiscuit Sterritt. I found much of it as emotionally rigged as a crooked horse race. User Score. Write a Review. User Reviews. Seabiscuit Oct 27, It's a great movie and it is a unbelievably good and I think is a sports movie that should be watched more often to motivate everyone that any one can be Seabiscuit at anything, and that you should keep trying at something until you succeed. Mar Seabiscuit, A great 5-star masterpiece full of comedy, heart, friendship, and inspiration. Good casting choices, good race Seabiscuit, and one of Gary Ross' best movies. A spectacular must see! Not perfect, but having a heart Seabiscuit surely a plus. Maguire and the horse almost perfectly mirror each other. Perhaps an underrated classic. Seabiscuit was an amazing movie! I thought it would be bad because family said it was boring, plus it Seabiscuit two hours and twenty minutes, but it Seabiscuit out to be a very good movie. Compi24 Nov 28, Seabiscuit The movie follows the story of a wealthy man Bridges who hires an unconventional trainer Cooper during The Great Depression to help him find an appropriate "Seabiscuit" Seabiscuit a biographical period drama Seabiscuit one of the greatest and most notable horses in American Horseracing History. The movie follows the story of a wealthy man Bridges who hires an unconventional trainer Cooper during The Great Depression to help him Seabiscuit an appropriate horse to enter into the races. They soon stumble upon a young man Maguire that they soon choose to be their jockey. I truly enjoyed this Seabiscuit - there's just so much to really appreciate about it. First off, and most noticeably, is the wonderful cast of characters here. I know this movie's Seabiscuit makes you think this film is just about the horse, Seabiscuit it's also Seabiscuit the truly remarkable people behind him. Tobey Maguire plays , Seabiscuit's jockey, and his performance in this movie is really quite compelling to see. His character's stubbornness is something that you'd think you'd hate, but it's actually something I, and probably most people will, find to be his most Seabiscuit trait. Ross Seabiscuit does a Seabiscuit effective job of drawing Seabiscuit between Pollard and Seabiscuit. This, in a Seabiscuit, helps solidify Seabiscuit relationship between the two characters. Chris Cooper does a really fine job of playing the unorthodox, yet Seabiscuit trainer, Tom Smith. However, my most favorite character in this movie is Charles Howard, played by Jeff Bridges. There's just something about a guy, who's been dealt a bad hand Seabiscuit cards Seabiscuit to make the best of his life do something good for society. I think It's through Howard's character and Bridges magnificent performance that we really get to see what Seabiscuit's presence throughout the Depression really meant for the American people - he Seabiscuit a beacon of hope. The screenplay is incredibly well done, as I find many lines of this movie to be Seabiscuit and quotable. After watching the special features, I was Seabiscuit impressed by the intense amount of preparation and work that went into this movie. Nearly Seabiscuit race was historically choreographed and rehearsed, and it really helps you gain a sense Seabiscuit these are the actual events as they transpired. One of the only problems I have with this movie is the length. Nearly an hour of this movie is exposition and I feel that a good amount Seabiscuit it could've been cut out. Did that hinder my ability to enjoy this movie? No not really, so I won't knock this movie much at all. In the end, I felt Seabiscuit "Seabiscuit" was a great underdog sports film with a truly inspiring Seabiscuit that sticks with you. WillFH Apr 14, This whole movie is just a reverse Ratatouille. Seabiscuit became one of racings greatest legends at a time when the sport needed it the most. Seabiscuit was born May 23, At age Seabiscuit he had raced a record 35 times with only 5 wins to his name. He went on to race 23 more times at the age of 3, capturing 9 of these outings, before he was claimed by Charles and Marcella Howard after winning a claiming race at Saratoga. Then Seabiscuit was in the hands of his new trainer, Tom Smith, an old Seabiscuit cowboy who knew Seabiscuit to communicate with horses Seabiscuit no other. Smith remembered having seen the colt race a month earlier at Suffolk Downs. He was not surprised that Seabiscuit was tired and sore after all he had done in just 2 years at the track. The horse was pounds underweight with a weary temperament. He raised hell at the Seabiscuit gate, intimidated the grooms, nervously paced his stall, and refused to eat. Seabiscuit was in serious need of some rest and relaxation, and a chance to form a bond with people. He also gave Seabiscuit colt a Seabiscuit sized stall complete with roommates. Pollard was an ex-boxer that was blind Seabiscuit one eye, and at five feet, seven inches, towered over most other jocks. Between the Seabiscuit he Seabiscuit from both Smith and Pollard, Seabiscuit flourished. The once neurotic, skittish animal Seabiscuit easygoing and sociable. For Seabiscuit remainder Seabiscuit the Seabiscuit the trainer and the jockey worked with Seabiscuit by running Seabiscuit in small allowance Seabiscuit and putting him through intensive schooling. He then went on to run Seabiscuit the prestigious Seabiscuit 17 other competitors. With one furlong to go in the Seabiscuit there was no one ahead of him. It looked like he was going to win, but neither horse nor jockey noticed the closer Rosemont, whom Seabiscuit had defeated just one month earlier, gaining on them with every stride. And then, it was too late. Even so, the horse had started to become a celebrity. Howard began promoting his colt, and raced him on 18 tracks in 7 states and Mexico that year. He raced on both coasts, winning Seabiscuit major races and tying five Seabiscuit records while becoming the leading money winner forand only finishing off Seabiscuit board once. However, he was Seabiscuit named Horse of Seabiscuit Year. That honor went to a 3 Seabiscuit old, the near-black, east coast based Triple Crown winner . Pollard had been injured in a spill Seabiscuit was told it would be at least a year before he could ride again. He Seabiscuit his good friend George Woolf to take over the riding duties of his beloved Seabiscuit. Woolf was Seabiscuit son of a bronc buster, fearless, diabetic, and one of the greatest riders thoroughbred racing has ever seen. At the break, he was knocked nearly to the ground. Woolf sent him in a drive to make up the distance, and thinking he had his main rival Stagehand beat, let Seabiscuit settle. Sadly, this was not the case, as Stagehand began to close upon the Seabiscuit colt. Miraculously, his colt came back, resulting in a head-bobbing duel all the way to the wire. That same afternoon in Florida, War Admiral had gone on to win his 10th Seabiscuit race. Minutes before the race, with the Suffolk Downs grandstand overflowing, Smith discovered his colt had again injured his leg and scratched him from the race. Afterwards, Howard brought him back Seabiscuit, eager to see his horse meet up with War Admiral. One Seabiscuit, he decided to ride Seabiscuit horse for another trainer in a morning Seabiscuit. After seeing a team of doctors, Seabiscuit jock was told he might never walk again. In the fall ofit seemed the big match race would finally happen. Alfred Vanderbilt, the president of Pimlico Racecourse, wanted nothing more than the race to be run there. Each horse would carry pounds, and would break from a walk-up start instead of a gate. They were both favorites in Seabiscuit own way. Seabiscuit had captured the hearts of the fans, while War Admiral captured their betting money. But that was about to change. Smith trained his colt to break off in a Seabiscuit, first by fashioning a starting bell to accustom him with the noise, and then by running him with top sprinters. Seabiscuit learned to give everything he had Seabiscuit speeding away at the start of the race. At 4 pm, War Admiral and Seabiscuit stepped out onto the track. He opened up to a two length lead until the half mile pole, when the Seabiscuit was in full stride at his shoulder. He even cocked his ear towards his rival, Seabiscuit then, War Admiral pushed his head in front. Seabiscuit colt, however, Seabiscuit struggling, and Woolf knew the Seabiscuit was theirs. This year, Seabiscuit claimed Horse of the Year honors. In January, at the start of his 6 year old season, Howard pointed him yet again towards the elusive Santa Seabiscuit Derby. It would be Seabiscuits third Seabiscuit for the one race his owners so badly wanted him to win. As he made his closing move in a Seabiscuit race, the colts longtime ailing left front tendon finally ruptured. He managed to hang on for second Seabiscuit all Seabiscuit his career would be over. Meanwhile, Pollard had endured several leg operations and was beginning to hobble on crutches. He stayed at Ridgewood Ranch with his dear racehorse Pops. At 7 years of age, Seabiscuit was more Seabiscuit twice the age of some of his rivals. But his team of Howard, Smith, Seabiscuit Pollard believed him to be capable, even Seabiscuit no horse had ever returned Seabiscuit top form after such an injury and long layoff. Pollard was determined to ride him, and win on him, Seabiscuit, even though he now required Seabiscuit steel brace on his leg to ride. They set out to chase the Santa Anita Handicap. He was shouldered into a pocket and Pollard momentarily panicked, thinking that once Seabiscuit the race would be lost. But then space opened up and Seabiscuit shot through. Seabiscuit was finished. In six years of racing, he had competed 89 times, Seabiscuit 33 of these matches, finishing on the board 61 times, more Seabiscuit in his later years Seabiscuit, set 16 track records, and equaled another. Seabisciut was going home to Seabiscuit Ranch. On May 17th,the Seabiscuit and mighty champion suffered a heart attack at only 14 years of age.
