A soldier during the reigns of and , Galerius was named in 293 and 12 years later, during the period, when the Empire was divided into smaller units for ease of administration. In 297, Galerius passed through the mountains of at the head of twenty-five thousand chosen men, and, having surprised the Persian army in the night, slaughtered great numbers of them. The booty, too, was immense, although he was too ignorant to realize it. When he found a bag of shiny leather filled with pearls he threw away the contents and preserved the bag! Galerius, having taken prisoners several of the wives and children of the Persian monarch Narses, treated them with such tenderness and respect that Narses made peace. Mesopotamia was therefore added to the empire. Galerius died of a horrible disease, the exact nature of which is unknown. The youthful spent his formative years at the court of Galerius, where he was, by custom, a royal hostage.

Certificate of Authenticity refers to the era of Roman history from the beginning of the reforms in 284 through the fall of the Western Empire in 476, and derives from the form of address preferred by emperors during that period.
