LITERACY SKILLS FOR EMERGING READERS – AGES 6-8 Tuesday, May 12 & Wednesday, May 13: 3pm – 4pm In this virtual two-day workshop, emerging readers ages six through eight will build confidence in improving their reading comprehension with fun, interactive activities. Students will use Immersive Reader in the OneNote app, which is currently available for Windows 10, Mac, and iPad. By the end of the two-day workshop, students will have mastered key tools that read text out loud-break it into syllables and increase spacing between lines and letters, read acted out, and illustrated stories. BOOST YOUR READING CONFIDENCE AND LITERACY SKILLS - AGES 8-12 Tuesday, May 19 & Wednesday, May 20: 3pm – 4pm In this two-hour virtual workshop, fluent and early fluent readers ages eight and older will have a blast with creative activities aimed to strengthen their reading skills. Students will explore the powerful reading tools found in the Immersive Reader in OneNote for Windows 10. This free application increases reading comprehension and encourages independent reading at home and at school. CREATING CONNECTIONS WITH DEAR EVAN HANSEN WORKSHOP - AGES 13+ Tuesday, May 26: 3pm – 4pm and the Tony award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen are partnering to provide a free, virtual one-hour workshop for students ages thirteen and older who want to authentically connect to themselves, friends, family, and their communities during this time of social distancing. Dear Evan Hansen has received critical acclaim and has inspired conversation about mental health and the perils of living in a society hyperconnected by social media, which can often feel lonely. Workshop participants will define what it means to make authentic connections and explore ways to create those connections. THE SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY'S "HALL OF FOSSILS" TOUR - AGES 8+ Wednesday, May 27: 3pm – 4:30pm Travel millions of years to the past without leaving your home. In this workshop, students ages 8+ are transported to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History right from their web browser using 360-degree interactive imagery. By the end of the workshop students will have explored the Smithsonian's famous "Hall of Fossils" in 360-degrees virtually , learned about natural history in the Jurassic age, and completed a fun virtual discovery hunt throughout the museum. Students get guidance on how to create a business plan and a polished pitch ready to share with others. CODE YOUR OWN VIDEO GAME WITH MAKECODE ARCADE - AGES 8+ Tuesday, June 9 & Wednesday, June 10: 3pm – 4pm In this virtual two-hour workshop series, students eight and older use block-based coding to create a video game with MakeCode Arcade. Students learn fundamental game and coding concepts like sprites, variables, and coordinates, and use their new skills to create and customize a playable game. By the end of the two-day workshop, students will have learned and used key game design and coding concepts, coded a playable game, published their game via a URL so they can continue to play and develop it after the camp.
