Serving Oregon’s South Coast Since 1878 TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 theworldlink.com ■ 75¢ Crum found guilty of Perfecting menacing

THE WORLD his ‘craft’

A jury found Charles Crum guilty of charges that he menaced four police offi- cers on Christmas day last year. The verdict handed down last Friday means Crum, 52, of Bandon, will face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $6,250. Sen- tencing is set for Sept. 16. Crum was accused of brandishing a pel- let gun at four police officers at his home on Dec. 25. The police were backing up medics answering a 911 call placed by Crum. Police were called, according to the prosecution, because of an outstanding warrant that Crum had for failing to appear in court on another matter. As police were leaving, Crum allegedly swung his door open and lifted the pellet gun over his head. Police proceeded to shoot 30 to 50 bullets at Crum. He was treated for injuries at Coquille Valley Hospital. To convict on the charge of menacing, the jury needed to find that Crum put the officers in immanent fear of serious physi- cal injury or death.

When Democrats and Republicans agree, I get nervous. It often means that they agree to grab my wallet. Both parties now agree that we don't have extra budget money lying around, but both say government does need to spend more on “infrastructure.” Even conservatives want more spent on roads and mass transit. The reason, advocates claim, is that infrastructure, unlike most government spending, has a “multiplier effect” -- it creates new wealth by doing things like speeding up travel. Well, it might. Advocates also point out something that seems obvious to them: Infrastructure is a job that must be done by government. Who else would launch big projects like the New York City subway system? Subways are what Big Government supporters call a “public good.” They are important to many people, but Public Forum there's no way that business would build subways or run them, they argue. Police search for suspect in stabbing MEDFORD (AP) — Police are looking for a man who fatally stabbed a 38-year-old Medford woman at her apartment complex. Maria Rodriguez was seen arguing outside with the suspect Sunday evening when she was repeatedly stabbed. Investigators say witnesses tried to intervene, but the man menaced them with the knife before run- ning off. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his mid-30s, 5-foot-7 and 180 pounds, wearing a blue or turquoise shirt. Rodriguez lived alone at the apartment complex. Astoria coach accused of assault, strangulation ASTORIA (AP) — The head coach of the girls’ bas- ketball team at Astoria High School has been accused of assaulting his 10-year-old daughter. The Daily Astorian reports a grand jury indicted 50- year-old Bradford Dalton on charges of assault and stran- gulation. According to the indict- ment, Dalton allegedly applied pressure to his daughter’s throat and neck during an incident that occurred July 30. Astoria police say the girl’s mother took photos to document the injuries. Dalton also teaches alge- bra and geometry at the high school. His arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 10. Audit blasts BPA hiring, promotion practices PORTLAND (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy has released a highly critical audit of human resources activities at Bonneville Power Administration, say- ing the agency’s hiring and promotion practices are inef- fective. The audit revealed perva- sive misapplications and departures from federal hir- ing guidelines and laws. Major violations were found in more than half the hiring cases reviewed, with appli- cants either being “erro- neously disqualified or mis- qualified.” Many of the specific prob- lems were identified as such in the agency’s 2010 audit. The 2013 Human Capital Management Accountability Program audit, released Fri- day under Freedom of Infor- mation Act requests from several parties, said those issues have only gotten worse.

A6• The World • Tuesday, September 3,2013 Hands DILBERT off the cheese!

I’ll admit it. Back in my carefree spendthrift days, I’d toss the cheese in the FRANK AND ERNEST garbage when it turned moldy. I was oblivious to the fact that I might as well be throwing dollar bills away. True, we could opt for buying just a few slices at a time from the deli counter, but that’s way too expensive. And unnecessary. I can save more EVERYDAY than $2 a CHEAPSKATE pound off the THE BORN LOSER best price at the super- market if I buy in bulk from a dis- count Mary ware- Hunt house like Sam’s Club or Costco. And that ZITS presents the problem of storage. Whoever said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” must have been a deli owner. Think about it. With all that cheese in those cases, have you ever seen one in a lovely shade of green? Never. In fact, all I know about the proper care and handling of cheese I learned from one such per- CLASSIC PEANUTS son. He introduced me to the two archenemies of cheese: air and bacteria. OUNCE OF PREVEN- THE FAMILY CIRCUS TION. Limit exposure to air, and you can greatly extend the useful life of any type of cheese. The American Cheese Society advises us to store cheese in fresh wrap- ping, preferably in waxed or parchment paper, after the cheese has been opened to FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE avoid having the cheese dry out or pick up other flavors. Natural cheese is a living organism, with enzymes and bacteria that need air and moisture to survive. Thus, re-wrapping the cheese in paper and then in plastic wrap to create a micro-envi- ronment for the cheese is the preferred storage treatment. However, you should not leave cheese in the same ROSE IS ROSE wrappings for extended periods of time. BACTERIA. I know that it takes bacteria to make cheese in the first place, but that is much different than the kind of bacteria on your hands. So here’s the second rule of mold prevention: Don’t touch the cheese! Even when you wash your hands well, some amount of bacte- ria remains, and while it’s LUANN not at all harmful to you or the cheese, that’s what gets that green thing going. Either wear food preparation gloves or make sure the plas- tic is always creating a barri- er between your hands and the portion of the cheese that’s going back into the refrigerator. POUND OF CURE. For cheese that has already turned, there are a couple of remedies. You can actually GRIZZWELLS wipe the mold away with a clean cloth you’ve dipped into white vinegar. Not the most pleasant job, but it does work to save the cheese. According the Mayo Clinic, mold generally can’t pene- trate far into hard and semi- soft cheeses, such as ched- dar, colby, Parmesan and Swiss. For others like cheddar, you can safely cut away the moldy part and eat the rest of the cheese. Cut off at least 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) around and below the moldy MODERATELY CONFUSED KIT ’N’ CARLYLE HERMAN spot. Be sure to keep the knife out of the mold so it doesn’t contaminate other parts of the cheese. Once all the green is gone, treat this as you would a new block of cheese by following the rules above. COOS BAY — Even though Marshfied’s football team didn’t keep score in its first live action against another team, the coach can consider it a win. The Pirates traveled up to Junction City on Friday to take on the host team as well as Amity in the Junction City Jamboree. “We got exposed in some areas were we need to get better and that’s why we do those things. But we also saw some thing we’re excited about,” head coach Josh Line said. “I was pleased.” Jamborees have structured rules set by the Oregon School Activities Association. On Friday, each team got 18 offensive snaps against the other two. Marshfield’s defense played well against Amity, stopping the Warriors’ spread offense enough to keep them out of the end zone.
