Overview

IBM(R) WebSphere(R) Application Server follows the Enhanced Lifecycle Policy: WebSphere Application Server traditional policy. This provides a minimum of five full years of standard support from the date the product release was made generally available by IBM, with the option to get support extensions for at least an additional three years following a product's discontinuance of service date.

IBM continues to be committed to supporting your journey to the cloud with the WebSphere platform. IBM provides the IBM Cloud PakTM for Applications offering to assist with this journey. This offering includes entitlement to traditional WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Liberty, Open Liberty, Red Hat(R) OpenShift(R) Container Platform, and Red Hat Runtimes. Cloud Pak for Applications enables you to modernize your workloads, from traditional WebSphere Application Server running on virtual machines to WebSphere Liberty running in a container deployed to Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform.

IBM will continue to provide standard support through at least 2030, for the following WebSphere Application Server offerings:

• IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 • IBM WebSphere Application Server V9.0.5 • IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V8.5.5 • IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V9.0.5 • IBM WebSphere Application Server Family Edition V8.5.5 • IBM WebSphere Application Server Family Edition V9.0.5 • IBM WebSphere Application Server -Express(R) V8.5.5 • IBM WebSphere Application Server for z/OS(R), V8.5.5 • IBM WebSphere Application Server for z/OS, V9.0.5

Terminology through at least 2030 is used. IBM has made no decision about an actual end-of-support date beyond 2030 for these versions of the WebSphere Application Server family of products.

This statement of support includes support for running traditional WebSphere Application Server with Java SE 8, using IBM SDK Java Technology Edition Version 8 that is provided with WebSphere Application Server only.

WebSphere Liberty runtime, provided as a part of WebSphere Application Server, maintains Java SE support versions independent of traditional WebSphere

WebSphere Liberty runtime will support Java SE versions as long as the AdoptOpenJDK open source project continues to provide builds of that supported runtime. This may result in Java SE 8 support ending sooner for WebSphere Liberty runtime than traditional WebSphere Application Server.

Support does not include support for running traditional WebSphere Application Server on the provided IBM SDK Java Technology Edition Version 7. Support for SDK Java Technology Edition Version 7 ends on July 31, 2022, as previously announced. See Software Announcement ZP19-0308, dated May 14, 2019.

If you are running traditional WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 with Java SE 7, you must migrate to Java SE 8 to continue to receive support beyond July 31, 2022.

IBM will continue, as appropriate, to evaluate and deliver security updates and security guidance in accordance with federal guidelines, and industry security standards and technologies.

• IBM intends to deliver support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 for both WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 and WebSphere Application Server V9.0.5 family of products. • IBM has already provided the Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) for WebSphere Application Server, and intends to provide guidance in accordance with security standards, such as FedRAMP and Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA).

It is the intent of IBM to continue to provide support for the listed supporting programs outlined in the WebSphere Application Server license agreement. It may be necessary, in some cases, to migrate to newer versions of these supporting programs. IBM will document the currently supported versions of supporting programs in the IBM Software Compatibility Reports.

It is the intent of IBM to continue to provide updates for operating system currency for the platforms supported by WebSphere Application Server, with the following exceptions:

• Support for the Solaris operating system, on both Sparc and x64-based architectures, is planned to end in September 2022. • Support for the HP-UX operating system on IntelTM ItaniumTM processors is planned to end in September 2022.

Separate end-of-support announcements for both Solaris and HP-UX will be provided at a later date. Extended support for both Solaris and HP-UX will be offered through September 2025.

IBM will continue to provide regular fix packs, as well as interim fixes when necessary, for both WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5 and WebSphere Application Server V9.0.5 of the WebSphere Application Server family of products, as documented on the Lifecycle Policy: WebSphere Application Server traditional website.
