PENNANT CHAMPIONS www.londonmajors.com www.majorsstore.com

President's Message Welcome to the IBL's 98th season and more importantly, the Majors· 93rd season in the league.

This past season was a great move forward for the Majors off field operations as we had our largest single season attendance since I have been a part of the Majors. This has been due to, in part, the great work of our players being ambassadors in the community. The way in which our players connect with our community - from the youngest fan to the oldest (wisest) fans is incredible to watch. is the common language that our players use as the tool to deliver the positive messages that sports can bring in what some may say are chaotic times. When I look around the ballpark and see all of the families that are watching the game on the field, and unknowingly they are also building memories and bonds within their family, it is one of those heartfelt moments.

We also have some of the best volunteers and game day staff that do their best to make the games run as smoothly as possible. They may not get the same spotlight that our players on the field get, but they are just as integral in making the fan experience for the few hours that you our fans spend w1th us. So when you see one of our many helpers, please take a moment to thank them for all of their efforts.

Lastly, our supporters of the team are our lifeline. It is imperative for any sports organization to have corporate partners and I have to say that we have some of the most amazing people that we get to work with. A lot of our corporate partners not only support the Majors. but they also step up to the plate when we are trying to bring awareness to a cause or a social services agency or a not for profit or to help raise much needed financial support to strengthen the fabric of our community.

I am looking forward to the season ahead as we strive to win a championship. Also I am looking forward to continue working with our community to create a family-friendly, inexpensive, action packed night at the World's Oldest Continually Used with the world's best fans!

This is the start of my 12th season as the Manager of the London Majors. I am always excited and honored to put on the uniform and manage this team. I love coaching these young men and watch them develop not only as players on the field but mature and be good citizens off the field. The 2016 season was a special season in that we captured our 2nd IBL Pennant (regular season champions) with me as the Manager. Our first pennant was captured in the 2008 season where we had a record of 27-8 to finish lst overall. Last year we had to play a tie breaker to win t he pennant with an impressive 28- 9 record. We lost in the semi-finals of the playoffs coming up short on our winning a championship.

We continue to give the local players an opportunity to play for their hometown team. We continue to be one of the few team to use mostly local players (2016 we had 15 of the 22 players, were guys that live in the London area). Our import players are also important as these are typically ex- pro players that lead the way and show the guys what it takes to get to the next level. Our fans have been great and it's good to see the continued growth from year to year in our fan base. It's always special for the boys to play in front of a large supportive crowd (2 games with excess of 5,000 fans - Pack the Park and July lst) and we greatly appreciate your support.

We continue to preach three main things to all of our players: HARDWORK, DEDICATION & RESPECT.

Go Majors Go! ~ ~L.}vl. Roop Chanderdat Co-owner, GM & Field Manager

After a full summer of triumph against their competitors, the London Majors won the Intercounty Baseball League's Pennant at the end of the franchise's 9lst season in 2016. One year later, memories of the epic deciding game are still fresh in fan's minds. Despite a 36-game schedule, the Majors hit the field for a 37th game to break their tie with the . The Panthers were formidable opponents with a highly skilled roster that included three members from the Cuban national team, but the Majors prevailed to shutout the Panthers 4-0. IBL ERA leader Cory Hammond was exceptional, pitching a 2- hit 9 complete game gem. During the regular season the Majors played an exciting brand of baseball. with a league high 100 stolen bases. Winning the Pennant was a true team effort, with great individual performances led by team MVPs Byron Reichstein and Cleveland Brownlee and team of the year, Elis Jimenez and Cory Hammond.

In the end, it was the Majors· strong, "family-bond" that led to victory, with each player applying their own brand of grit and passion to carry the team through the regular season grind. With the goal of winning a league championship, the London Majors have returned for their 92nd season to put fans on the edge of their seats while playing their hardest yet. ---1111111111111111111111 ROYAL LEPAGE ---1111111111111111111111 TRILAND REALTY REAL ESTATE BROKERAGE ' SALES REPRESENTATI VE EACH BROKERAGE INDEPENDENTLY OWNED & OPERATED e~ NOT INTENDED TO SOliCIT THOSE CURR ENTLY UNDER CONTRACT AWARD WINNING REALTOR'" Season Schedule 2017Games

A London Tradition Since 1925 Stan Jones and Tommy White - Legends of the London Army Team

By: Angela M clnn In 1943 the London Army team laid down the groundwork as forerunners to the team that would be renam d the London Majors in 1944. The team was made up of 17 remarkably talented m n, but It w as two players in particular that set them apart from the competition and help pav the w ay to victory.

There was no stopping the London Army team with Stan "Tubby" Jones (pictured in the top row , third from the right) as catcher and Tommy White (front row at the far right wearing military uniform) as the star pitcher.

Working in a unit known in baseball terms as a "battery", the team relied heavily on their co- operation. A strong bond of trust between the two was of the utmost importance - "crossing up" each other's signals could have been disastrous to the game. Luckily, Jones and White worked extraordinarily well together and the 1943 London Army team earned the titles of Senior Intercounty Baseball League Champions, Ontario Baseball Association Senior A Champions and Canadian Baseball Congress Champions.

Tommy White was also star pitcher of the 1948 London Majors, winners of the Senior Intercounty Baseball League Championship, the Ontario Championship, the Canadian Baseball Congress Championship and the Can-Am Championship. This team is now widely considered to be one of the best amateur men's baseball teams of all time. Later, White supported local athletes as the owner of a sporting goods store in St. Thomas, Ontario.

In 2017, the London Majors look up to Jones' and White's legendary example of team work and comradery. Stan Jones, 94, fondly recalls playing for London. He will be attending the Majors' Alumni Reunion Event at the Roy McKay Clubhouse at La batt Park prior to the game between the Brantford Red Sox and London Majors on Sat. July 22 at 7:35pm.

BIG VIKING GAMES 285 King Street The Strangest Home-Run Smash in La batt Park's Long History By: Barry Wells Forty-one years ago when the wood-loving beaver became Canada's official o;nascot, the 1975 London Majors, skippered by the late Roy McKay, won the Intercounty Baseball Lea~ue (IBL) pennant (20-8 record) and championship series against using a dynamite combinatoon of pitching, defence and lumber. In 2015, the '75 team was inducted into the London Sports Hall of Fame. In fact. it was the last time The Local Nine won the IBL title, although the 2008 Majors won the league ~:~ns".:': i~i~~~~ ~~~ro~~es~iB~It:~~e:ts~~Bs;~~r!~~t/·~~~)~.st the cha"lpionship series with the Brantford

McKay's outstanding '75 club was deep in talent and long on camaraderie and teamwork. Two of its five all stars were league MVP Mike (Killer) Kilkenny and slugger Larry (Haggar) Haggitt. Killer was a tall, southpaw pitcher fresh from five seasons in The Bigs (, , and Oakland A's) who still had all his stuff on the mound. He went undefeated (9-0) during the regular season and also in;l:he playoffs (5-0). First-baseman Larry Haggitt won the '75 IBL batting crown with a .412 season average. According to IBL Iron Man and all-star teammate Arden (RD) Eddie, "Killer used to say before games he pitched, 'Just give me two runs and I'll take care of the rest:• Getting a hit off Kilkenny was like trying to steal a pork chop from a pit-bull terrier. Larry Haggitt, a powerful six-footer built like a brick shithouse, could really crush a baseball. ·one night in '75 during the bottom of the 1st; says Eddie, "Haggar's at the plate and he launched one into orbit; a moon shot over the wood fence in right-foeld and out of the park." As the tumblers of time would have it, Larry's wife, Rachel, who'd gone shopping at White Oaks Mall before the game, was travelling westward over the new Queens Avenue bridge on her way back to watch the game. Just after she arroved at the bridge's western end, a meteor- like baseball smashed into her front windshield. Or as describes it, "the ball and the windshield arrived at the same Earth co ordinates together and the ball and the windshield became one: Only after Rachel returned to the park did she discover it was husband Larry who'd dispatched the ball like a cannon, out of the park onto Riverside Drive. "It was funny as hell to everyone except Rachel and Haggar; says Eddie. What are the odds of clobbering a game ball 475 feet into the windshield of your own moving car? Given that only one man in a million can even hit a baseball 475 feet, the odds of randomly smashing the windshield of your own moving car at that distance are astronomical. It's the only home-run blast during Haggitt's career that lightened his wallet at Apple Auto Glass®. Teammate Barry J . Fuller contends Haggitt "also drilled another one that hit the old Dutch Laundry on the other side of Riverside; an estimated 560 feet from home plate. during another game. · "Hag\) itt was on fire that year; says all-star infielder Barry (Boogie) Boughner. "He hit that ball out of the yard on right field onto Riverside Drive and it's still going. For the uninitiated, baseball is a magical game of synchronicity, where playful Baseball Gods revel in creating unusual coincidences where spirt- second timing is everything. The field is the sacred stage, the infield a diamond. There's nine defensive players and nine . Runners move around the bases counter clockwise, but there's no time clock. Theoretically, a game can last forever.

When you think you've seen all the strange plays imaginable, another one unfolds before your eyes. As the late Yankee catcher Yogi Berra would say, "It's deja vu all over again:

A London Tradition Since 1925 The Intercounty Baseball League has been a part of summ r In uth rn Ontario for 3 y ors now and for its 94th season, the League is venturin~J into Eastern Ontario with th odmls lon of lh Oltaw suspended operatoons following the 2009 s ason. The League has had its ups and dow ns ov r lh y rs. but It conllnues to provide ba ball fan w ith exciting acllon every summer. The League began in 1919 with j ust four t ams. .. Golt. Guelph, lralford and Kllch n r. Despite a rocky start the Inter-County m anaged to survive its first season.

The rest. as they say is history.

It's a lon!l and rich history too. In the early years the League expanded with London, Brantford, Preston and Sl Thomas joining at vanous times.

By the mid 1930s. the Inter-County had established wreputation as one of Ontario's best amateur leagues. In fact when Stratford won the Ontario Baseball Association title in 1934, it was the League's fifth OBA title in a row.

The League survived the Second World War in good shape, even though many players joined the armed forces. After the war, the League became professional in everything but name.

The Inter-County was considered by the professional ranks as an .. outlaw" league at that time. The bidding war for players w as fierce, and many ex-major league players came to Ontario looking for a few last baseball bucks.

So many came, in fact. that the League was considered on a par with many minor pro leagues. Great crowds came out to see the games, which were played under floodlights for the first time in the 1950s, and the senior league appointed its first commissioner, John Gillies, a London lawyer and former pitcher in the League.
