The meaning of the Chris- tian confession that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,”1 however, has produced exceedingly diverse interpretations for theological methods and content.2 With the arrival of feminist theo- logians in the middle of the twentieth century, the very credibility of the Christian tradition was retested for its content and relevance based on their insistence that there exists an inseparable causal relationship between gender experience, theological interpretations, and praxis.3 Spe- cifically, feminist theologians argue that orthodox Christology reflects predominantly androcentric patriarchal ideology and therefore has failed to communicate Jesus’ iconoclastic, subversive teaching and life against status systems, especially within religious communities. They, therefore, claim that “the Christ symbol must be reconstructed so that all who engage it may find in it a source of human liberation.”4 1. Heb 13:8 (NIV). 2. [Feminist Mariologies are partly the reaction of a justified anger to centuries of discrimination against women enshrined in the very Scriptures, in the central theological tradition, and in the life of the Church. Mariology allows feminists to reflect on exegesis, patriar chy, equality, autonomy, obedience, sexual life, social roles, and professionalism. The rejection of all subordination, even to other women, and the maleness of Christ drive feminist Mariologies so that some move the theological location of Mariology from the gendered Christology to the ungendered Pneumatology and the reign of God.] LREADY IN 1981 the German feminist Elisabeth Gossmann said she A feared "a new Marian maximalism" which had its origins among feminist theologians.1 Nine years later the Scottish feminist Daphne Hamp- son wrote of a feminist "fixation" on Mary.2 One might surmise that the interest in Mary was dictated by the number of theological lines converging in Mariology: Scripture, Christology, anthropology, discipleship, sexuality, subordination, and eschatology.3 It is possible that some feminists thought that by addressing Mariology they could address the whole of theology. Possible, but not likely. More likely anger motivated them. Failing to grasp the Lutheran paradigm, Catholics have wrenched Luther into an inappropriate framework. Roman/ Lutheran ecumenism, culminating in the `Joint declaration' of 1999, attempts to reconcile incompatible systems, based on different philosophical presuppositions. Drawing on a wealth of material, both Continental and Anglo-Saxon, the author thinks through these structural questions within a historical context. But how ± within a religion of revelation ± can God be conceptualised as both foundational to the self and yet also an `other' with whom the self inter-relates? Kierkegaard is shown in a complex model to hold together strengths which histori- cally have been exempli®ed by the two traditions. This is an important work in systematic theology which considers questions quite fundamental to Western religion. Building a Church for Strangers John Swinton, PhD, BD, RMN, RNMH ABSTRACT. The paper focuses on the relationship between the author and a young man who has Down’s syndrome. As the author reflects on his experiences with Stephen, he finds his understanding of theology, church and disabilities transformed. Life with Stephen reveals the op- pressive nature of Western societies and the subtle ways in which the church is implicated in such oppression. Yet at the same time the depen- dence and simplicity of Stephen’s life reminds us of forgotten dimen- sions of being human. Beginning with the premise that developmental disabilities in all of their different forms are not problems to be solved, but rather authentic ways of being human that need to be understood and respected, the paper challenges the church to be the church in a way that is meaningful and inclusive. If all human beings are truly made in God’s image, then the Body of Christ must become a place where discrimination and prejudice are abandoned and uncompromising love is embraced. Jenks, B.A., M.Div., Th.M. Marquette University, 2014 For several decades voices from various sectors of Christianity have decried the loss of compelling language for sin. The atrophying of sin language is of no small moment due to the organic connection between theological loci. Sin talk relates to salvation-talk, human-talk, and Christ-talk. Further, the loss of compelling sin language threatens to silence the church’s voice in the culture. Both classic and contemporary theologies of sin, pursuing the essentialist methods of the past, attempt to define sin and derive the fullness of the doctrine of sin from these distillations. However, many of these renderings of sin are insufficiently attentive to the importance of narrative modes of thought in theologizing. -

ATR/S8:2 Sin—No More? A Feminist Re-Visioning of a Christian Theology of Sin JOY ANN MCDOUGALL* There is a largely unquestioned consensus in North Atlantic feminist Christian theology against speaking of sin either as a ruptured relationship or refusal of a transcendent God's will for humankind. In contrast, this article explores what a feminist the ology of sin might look like, if it is rooted in humanity's dynamic relationship to a radically transcendent gift-giving God. In what follows, Daphne Hampson's "After Christianity' exemplifies the position that Christianity's classical symbolic order is incompati ble with feminist views of selfhood and equitable gender relations. Second, Hampson's claims are contested by the view that a radi cally transcendent God can be a source of human empowerment, as shown in Kathryn Tanner's theology in 'Jesus, Humanity, and the Trinity." Finally, the author demonstrates how Tanner's con cept of sin as "blockage" or "blindness" to God's gift-giving, once "rhetorically re-dressed" in feminist terms, can overcome the gen der troubles with the classical Protestant paradigmi of sin as pnde. Whatever Happened to the Feminist Doctrine of Sin? No doctrine in Christian theology has proved more vexing to con temporary North Atlantic feminist theologians than that of sin. In the early seventies Valerie Saiving and Judith Plaskow touched off an initial feminist protest against the doctrine by challenging the para digm of sin found in the works of Reinhold Niebuhr and Paul Tillich. * Joy Ann McDougall is Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University. -

Inevitably this means that some development of content in various areas will be required from teachers which is the reason for the various references listed throughout. Teachers are of course encouraged to find their own references which they deem suitable for candidates of this age group. It is also important for teachers and students to remember that part (a) (AO1) is worth 40% (20 marks) which may require roughly 15 minutes of writing. The author has also endeavoured to provide some pointers by way of critical evaluation (CE) which can be developed throughout the delivery of this unit. It is important to note that the skills of CE now command a weighting of 60% (30marks) which should take roughly 25 minutes of writing. Examiners expect candidates to be aware of various arguments that support different points of view. Also as part of CE, candidates can provide a conclusion in which they are at liberty to offer their own point of view, provided their arguments are supported. One final point: examination questions are based solely on the content provided in the specification unit and not on an e-book or text book.
