December 8th, 2017 marked the first ever Shuaijiao World Cup held in the United States. One of the more popular and oldest sports of , this ancient form of grappling has gotten some significant traction outside of its home country. While not a main- stream grappling sport like Judo or wrestling, it has still seen growing popularity in countries such as , France, and Italy. Shuaijiao World Cup Tournament — continued...

The event was organized by the United States Shuai Jiao Association headed by Chairman, Dr. Chi-hsiu Daniel Weng, and formed by the Shuai Jiao World Cup Organizing Committee. The committee also included Emeric Chen, John Ervin Jr., Michael Lomotan, Nicholas Osborne, and Jan-Yu Weng.

Located in a prestigious area of southern San Jose, the Dolce Hayes Mansion was the lodging designated for the competitors. While customarily booked for weddings and more formal occasions it was more than welcoming to all of the Shuai Jiao fighters and coaches from around the world. From a Winter Wonderland to a Red Carpet room, the Dolce Hayes Mansion was more than accommodating with differently themed party rooms making each day of the stay there fresh and vibrant. Every day the athletes and visitors were welcomed with buffets of delicious food in elegant surroundings; ensuring their visit to San Jose would leave a lasting and favorable impression.

The tournament venue also couldn’t be more appropriately located than the Yoshihiro Uchida Hall at San Jose State University, famously named after a long term head coach of the Judo team for the school at the highest level. The participating countries were Brazil, Canada, China, Chinese-Taipei, Colombia, France, , Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Poland, Spain, and the United States. Weigh-ins began on Thursday, and the elimination rounds occurred on Friday, where most fighters had to fight for the opportunity to medal. The majority of the tournament fights and the final round fights for medal placements were held the following Saturday. The impressive opening ceremony had flags for each country, with the flag-bearers being students from the local host Shuaijiao school, The Cupertino Kung Fu Club.

The outstanding quality of competitors and effort put in by the organizers ultimately made for a phenomenal first time for the Shuai Jiao World Cup by the United States. The relentlessness of the fighters and their wills to win were paralleled by the tremen- dous efforts of all those who participated in making the Shuai Jiao World Cup a possibility. This historic event has shown that not only is Shuai Jiao making a bigger splash in the martial arts and sports world, but that it will continue to excel in bringing high quality competition and good sportsmanship to future events.
