Dilip Sarkar (62), former Tripura Minister and five-time MLA from Badharghat in Agartala, died early on Monday after a prolonged illness.

He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in New Delhi and was put on ventilation a few days ago. He was declared dead at around 3 a.m., said his family members.

Sarkar was a briefly a Minister during the Congress- Tripura Upajati Juba Samiti coalition government in 1988. Despite being a diehard Congressman, he joined the BJP before the February 2018 Assembly elections which ended the 20-year rule of the CPI(M)-led Left Front in the State. He was close to former Central Minister and Congress stalwart late Santosh Deb.

China has successfully launched the first of its new-generation data relay satellites into orbit that will provide data relay, measurement and control services for its manned spacecraft.

The Tianlian II-01 satellite was launched by a Long March-3B carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest China's Sichuan Province Sunday night.

As the first satellite to constitute China's second-generation data relay satellite network, the Tianlian II-01 will provide data relay, measurement and control, transmission services for manned spacecraft, satellites, carrier rockets and other non-spacecraft users.

The Tianlian II network will be markedly more advanced in mission planning, system management and operations than the first-generation network composed of Tianlian I satellites, state-run Xinhua news agency reported on Monday.

The new network, with faster data transfer and higher multi-objective service capability, will play an important role in improving the transmission promptness, in-orbit security and mission flexibility for medium- and low- Earth orbiting satellites and manned spacecraft, it said.

The satellite is developed by the China Academy of Space Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

One of the most prominent faces of , director J Mahendran breathed his last on Tuesday morning at his residence in . He was 79.

Last week, he was hospitalised after brief illness. His son and filmmaker John Mahendran shared the news on Twitter. He wrote, “Director Mahendran passed away this morning.”

Mahendran became a prolific screenplay writer before turning to direction. His first directorial Mullum Malarum (1978) was an instant hit that had impact beyond the box office.
