AN ORDER OF SERVICE for THE INSTITUTION by the Right Reverend Dr Joanne Woolway Grenfell of

and

THE INDUCTION by the

Venerable Elizabeth Adekunle,

of The Reverend James Hughesdon

as Vicar of the

Parish of Saint Mary Islington

3pm, 31st January 2021 online

INTRODUCTION

This service is both a legal ceremony and an opportunity for us to pledge ourselves anew to God’s work.

The oaths of allegiance to the Crown, of canonical obedience to the Bishop and the Declaration of Assent assure the congregation that the new Vicar believes, speaks and acts in a way that is fitting for a Christian minister.

The Collation denotes the admission of the new Vicar to the spiritual care and leadership of the parish.

Everyone has a part to play in the service, which is both joyful and solemn. Please pray for the new Vicar, the Revd James Hughesdon, and for all the people who work, serve and worship at St Mary’s. Pray too for the Bishop, and the Archdeacon and pray for your own commitment to the service of Christ and his Church.

ZOOM GUIDANCE

Due to the current national restrictions this service is taking place solely on Zoom.

Please ensure that you are muted throughout the service.

You can download the order of service from our website: stmaryislington.org

Later in the year St Mary’s will be holding a service of celebration to properly welcome James, Caz and the family, as well as giving thanks for all that God has done and will do in the life of St Mary’s.

The Churchwardens of St Mary’s are present in the church as representatives of the congregation and participants in the service.

The Affirmation

Bishop Priests are ordained to work with the Bishop as servants and shepherds among the people to whom they are sent. They are called to baptise, to proclaim the Word of the Lord and to preside at the Eucharist.

In order to fulfil this ministry James needs your prayers and encouragement. Before I license him I require his assurance that he accepts the responsibilities of his new office in the Church; and your assurance that you will work with him in partnership and give him the encouragement he needs.

Bishop Priest and people, will you work together as servants of Christ in this place? All By the grace of God, we will.

Bishop James, will you seek to enable these people to become the people of God; will you lead them in worship and in service; will you encourage them to share in the life of the Gospel and proclaim God’s saving love to the world? Priest By the grace of God, I will.

2

Bishop People of God, will you be faithful members of the Body of Christ? Will you support James and, together with him, serve the Kingdom of God? All By the grace of God, we will.

It professes the faith uniquely revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the Catholic Creeds, which faith the Church is called upon to proclaim afresh in each generation. Led by the Holy Spirit, it has borne witness to Christian truth in its historic formularies - the Thirty Nine Articles of Religion, the Book of Common Prayer, and the ordering of , Priests and Deacons.

James, in the declaration you are about to make, will you affirm your loyalty to this inheritance of faith as your inspiration and guidance under God in bringing the grace and truth of Christ to this generation and making him known to those in your care?

The Declaration of Assent

Priest I, James Carlyle Hughesdon, do so affirm and accordingly declare my belief in the faith which is revealed in the Holy Scriptures and set forth in the Catholic creeds and to which the historic formularies of the Church of England bear witness, and in public prayer and administration of the sacraments will use only the forms of service which are authorised or allowed by Canon.

Bishop God our Father, Lord of all the world, through your Son you have called us into the fellowship of your Universal Church. Hear our prayer for your faithful people that in their vocation and ministry each may be an instrument of your love, and give to your servant James now to be instituted the needful gifts of grace; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. 4

Hymn: 10,000 Reasons

Bless the Lord O my soul O my soul Worship His holy name Sing like never before O my soul I'll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up it's a new day dawning It's time to sing Your song again Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me Let me be singing when the evening comes

You're rich in love and You're slow to anger Your name is great and Your heart is kind For all Your goodness I will keep on singing Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

And on that day when my strength is failing The end draws near and my time has come Still my soul will sing Your praise unending Ten thousand years and then forevermore

Worship Your holy name Lord I'll worship Your holy name

Luke 2: 22-40 - Read by a Churchwarden of St Mary’s

Reader Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. All Glory to you, O Lord.

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord”), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”

And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four.

6

She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

At the end:

Reader This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

All sit. Sermon: Right Reverend Dr Joanne Woolway Grenfell

Remain seated.

The Collation

The Bishop reads the legal document which James is holding a copy of with both hands saying these words:

Bishop James, receive the Cure of Souls which is both yours and mine; in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Priest Amen.

7

The Bishop blesses the new Priest:

Bishop Let us pray.

Almighty Father, give your servant, James, grace to fulfil his ministry in this parish with humility and self-sacrifice, and the spirit of gentleness and peace. Give him faithfulness in proclaiming your word, and wisdom, strength and tenderness in caring for your people. As you have called him to your service, make him worthy of his calling, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

James, may the God of Peace, who brought from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, give you vision, courage and love to do his will; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and all your work done in his name. All Amen.

The Induction and Installation

The Bishop delivers the mandate of Induction to the Archdeacon saying:

Whereas we have duly and canonically admitted our well beloved in Christ, James, to the Cure of Souls in this parish, we hereby empower and require you to induct him into the real and actual possession of this Church and Benefice and to defend him so inducted.

James walks to the seat designated for him. The Archdeacon says:

James, I install you as the Vicar of this parish. The Lord will defend your going out and your coming in, from this time forth for evermore. Amen.

8

James holds the keys of the church and the Archdeacon says:

By virtue of this mandate, I induct you into the real and actual possession of this church with all the rights and responsibilities belonging to it.

James goes to the church bell and tolls it as a sign of the start of his ministry in the parish.

James is welcomed with applause.

Hymn: Tell out my soul

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice; Tender to me the promise of his word; In God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

12

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; His mercy sure, from age to age the same; His holy name, the Lord, the mighty One.

Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by; Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, The hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord To children's children and forever more!
