Marvin “Skeeter” Francis January 10, 1922 - July 6, 2004 Wake Forest Sports Information Director (1956-68) ACC Assistant Commissioner (1968-90) The Wake Forest family and the entire ACC lost a great friend when Marvin “Skeeter” Francis passed away at the age of 82 in Winston-Salem on July 6. Francis, who attended Wake Forest College, began his career in sports journal- ism in his hometown with the Durham Herald before becoming the sports informa- tion director at Wake Forest in 1956. He became the ACC’s first full-time media rela- tions director and tournament manager at the ACC Basketball Tournament. A member of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame, Skeeter was truly one of Wake Forest’s greatest treasures. The Groves Stadium pressbox is named after Francis and he served as the pressbox public address announcer from 1968-2003. An almost daily visitor to the Wake Forest media relations office, we will miss him dearly. We were lucky and proud to call him our friend.
