An Oige Hiking Programme Jan 2021.Indd Hike Programme January 2021 Please Note: Preference will be given on the “Special Buses”, to Members of An Óige on production of their Membership Card. It is therefore imperative to bring your Membership Card with you, each Sunday. Membership Fees are as follows from January 2021: €25 for over 25 years old, and €15 for under 25 years old. Valid An Óige Membership Cards required. Renew online at https://anoige.ie/membership/join-sign-in/ Payment by Credit Card / Laser Card or email for assistance [email protected]. You can also request assistance from Marie McDonnell or Jim Barry. It is imperative that the instructions of the Hike Leaders be adhered to by those participating. The Leader sets the pace of the hike and walkers are expected to obey his/her instructions at all times. Leaders have the right to refuse to take anyone who does not co-operate with them fully, and anyone who they consider would not be able to walk at a reasonable pace, especially on the Moderate Hikes. Walkers who go on Moderate Hikes should be fi t and able to keep up with the Hike. A Co-Ordinator has been appointed each Sunday to organise Hikers on Eden Quay. Maximum number on all hikes = 15, including Hike Leaders. Unless otherwise stated, please observe the following: HIKING BOOTS OR STRONG SHOES FOR EASIER HIKES HIKING BOOTS ONLY FOR MODERATE HIKES, EASIER MODERATE HIKES WEAR: NO JEANS. NO DOGS ALLOWED ON HIKES. FACE MASKS ARE MANDATORY Face Covering, Hand Sanitiser, Rainwear, Flask, Sandwiches, Simple First Aid Kit, Sun BRING: Block, Hat & Gloves plus Head or Hand Torch, High Visibility Armband or Vest from now on. Please do not share any item of clothing, equipment , food or drinks at this time Face Coverings are mandatory for travelling on the private bus and on Public Transport. Intending hikers will not be permitted to participate on any activity without a Face Covering. OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST Saving Mountain Lodge From 1937 to 2012, the Lodge was leased by An Óige, and was run as a Youth Hostel. Now Burncourt Community Council, through a sub-lease, are restoring it as a Community Project, planning to rejuvenate the former Shooting Lodge into a resource for artists and writers, including a café in the Summer. An Óige Groups are also invited to use the Lodge. A new fi re escape is required at the back of the building, to enable the room upstairs to be brought back into use. It is accessed off the L1011 and then via the L5041 which forms part of the Wicklow Way. The site is located at circa the 250m contour at the eastern road side boundary. The site levels fall to circa 230m contour to the south-western corner. There are extensive views out over the Glencree River valley and towards Glencullen Mountain to the north, Powerscourt Mountain to the south and Glencree to the west. 1.2. The site has a stated area of 1.74 hectares and it comprises a grassed field. It contains sections of gorse. An area of semi-mature trees and saplings have been planted on the northern side of the site. The adjoining lands to the north and west are under forestry. 2.0 Proposed Development 2.1. Permission is sought for a house, vehicular access, driveway & wastewater treatment plant.     List of Irish Mountain Passes The following document is a list of mountain passes and similar features extracted from the gazetteer, Irish Landscape Names. Please consult the full document (also available at Mountain Views) for the abbreviations of sources, symbols and conventions adopted. The list was compiled during the month of June 2020 and comprises more than eighty Irish passes and cols, including both vehicular passes and pedestrian saddles. There were thousands of features that could have been included, but since I intended this as part of a gazetteer of place-names in the Irish mountain landscape, I had to be selective and decided to focus on those which have names and are of importance to walkers, either as a starting point for a route or as a way of accessing summits. Some heights are approximate due to the lack of a spot height on maps. Certain features have not been categorised as passes, such as Barnesmore Gap, Doo Lough Pass and Ballaghaneary because they did not fulfil geographical criteria for various reasons which are explained under the entry for the individual feature. They have, however, been included in the list as important features in the mountain landscape. This includes a rich and varied archaeological and architectural heritage to be found throughout the countryside and within the historic towns and villages of the county. Archaeological sites, features and objects both above and below ground, or underwater are evidence of human settlement from our earliest ancestors down to more recent centuries and provide information on how people in the area lived, worked and died. The architectural heritage relates to visible structures or buildings above ground of special value locally, regionally, nationally or even internationally. It covers many different building types, such as domestic houses, churches and shop premises but also includes other built elements such as bridges, piers, roads, engine houses, railways, holy wells, boundary walls to large estates, millraces, sluices and street furniture. The architectural and archaeological heritage of a town, village or place contributes greatly to the distinctive character of each local area. The Council is committed to safeguarding this heritage so that future generations may also enjoy this inheritance. This can be achieved by sensitively managing changes that occur to this heritage and by ensuring that significant elements, features or sites are retained.

Hike Programme – February 2017 Please remember that all hikes commence from the Start Point and at the Time given in the hike programme. Please note the start times given below and plan to arrive at least fifteen minutes before that time. The Club would encourage members to continue to seek to car pool to hikes if at all possible, so please use the club website to do so or make arrangements directly with your fellow hikers, as others already do, or contact those living in your area. Members availing of lifts should offer to share/contribute towards drivers’ expenses. It is advisable to try to share your car with others and not to rely totally on the beneficence of others. Car pooling arrangements should be made in advance of the hikes. If members are uncertain about how to get to the start location, they should contact the leader or another member to get directions .Leaders please ensure the hike departs at the laid down time from the start point. Essential requirements for all Club hikes are adequate weatherproof and waterproof clothing, a map and compass, hiking boots, a rucksack, sufficient food and hot drinks, plus emergency rations for the day; a whistle, torch, double survival bag and first aid kit.
