Our Ongoing Projects Detail 1. Project Title 1 :- BUNDELKHAND INITIATIVE FOR WATER AGRICULTURE AND LIVELIHOOD (BIWAL) 2 . Aim of the Project – Rehabilitation of Chandelkaleen and Bundelkaleen Ancient Tanks .

3 . Program Supported by – SRIJAN & Hindustan Unilever Foundation

Why this Project is Important - As we knows that Bundelkhand region is a drought prone and rainfed area, in this area agriculture activities highly affected from drought and climate change .here farmers are depending on rain water based farming irrigation water availability is also very low so water is a main source of here farming system without water availability farmers could not take any agriculture crop. We know that BIWAL project objective is to save water for farmers and enhancement of agricultural livelihood of farmers . hence we understand that program is so important for this area .

Our Initiative in this Project :- In this Program Bundelkhand Sewa Sansthan (BSS) have initiated for the Revival of Ancient Chandelkaleen Ponds, in first phase BSS have choose 3 ponds of 3 villages of Lalitpur District . BSS have been successfully completed De- siltation work of all 3 ponds . Now all the 3 pond are full of water,.Water harvesting and use through open ponds, irrigation tanks and their networks form part of the well-known traditional water management systems in India. Thousands of such ponds and tanks exist even today, all over India. Several States in India recognized the importance of these water bodies in ecological balance, livelihoods of farmers and augmenting ground water resources and have been taking up renovation works in last decades. Though silt removal from the bed of the tanks was done to augment the live and dead storage of the tanks in many such Government and NGO funded programs.it still remained a minor component in the entire work of tank renovation. Transporting the silt for application in the agricultural lands, on a massive scale and with the fullest participation of the farmers is not attempted in many of such initiatives. Given the inherent difficulties in organizing and bringing hundreds of unorganized farmers together around each irrigation tank or a pond, much of the efforts of tank renovations were on physical and functional improvements to the tank structures including its feeder channels and water distribution networks.

8

BSS Annual Report 2019-20 silt removal and application in agricultural lands is an important component. organizing farmers to voluntarily lift and transport the silt to their rain-fed agricultural lands. This experience demonstrated clear benefit in terms of increased storage capacities of the tanks, enhanced soil fertility, better crop productivity and incomes to farmers. The processes followed in mobilizing informal groups of farmers for this purpose and in systematically organizing the distribution through transparent monitoring processes, have insights that are useful to similar mainstream initiatives. We have Conducted Training of Water Security Plan, Water Budgeting for farmers. we have formed water user Committees such as Tank Management Committee..

(14) River Rejuvenation :- An Successful Effort By Bundelkhand Sewa Sansthan (BSS) - Bandai is a local river arising in the forests of Madhya Pradesh which joins Dhasan River which in turn drains itself into Betwa River. The water of Betwa River drains into Yamuna River which ultimately meets Ganga River in Allahabad. Bandai River traverses through Madawara block of Lalitpur district in Uttar Pradesh. Madawara Block has been facing drought since the year 2003. To protect Madawara area from drought, Bundelkhand Sewa Sansthan (BSS) along with local community based organizations launched a campaign named Bandai River Rejuvenation in July, 2003. The campaign witnessed a lot of ups and downs. But with several resolutions, meetings, foot march and conferences, construction of bunds at eight locations across the river finally began in the year 2010. After the construction of bunds, the water level has risen as rainwater has been since retained, which helped in solving problems related to irrigation and drinking water. All components of the environment are closely linked to one another and water is the most vital component. Thus, by solving water crisis in the Madawara Block, a positive change has been observed in the region. This is one of the many real stories about how nonprofit organizations keep striving for the betterment of the society and protection of the environment. The intensive effort BSS took for solving water crisis in Madawara block needs recognition. It gives other organizations as well as individuals an inspiration to conserve natural resources and fight for their rights.

Introducing SCI in Rainfed Regions – A Pilot Program (suppoted by People Science Institute (PSI) and Revitalizing Rain fed Agriculture Network (RRAN):- In this program we have been worked in 2 districts of Bundelkhand region one Lalitpur (U.P) and second Tikamgarh (M.P.) total 300 hundred farmers had been targeted in this program . BSS have trained the farmers about System of Crop Intensification (SCI) method . BSS also have developed some of the farmers as a master trainers at village level .The SCI methods (including SWI which also has an additional advantage of having being scientifically validated) are particularly relevant for resource- limited, nutritionally-vulnerable households of the rainfed regions of India because they rely so little on purchased inputs. They reduce farmers’ costs of production and water requirements as well as strengthen their crops’ climate-resilience with less year-to-year variation in output. Better root systems and more beneficial life in the soil help to buffer the effects of drought, storm damage, extreme temperatures, and pests and diseases. The goal of the proposed pilot program is therefore to demonstrate, by taking up the case of SWI as well as other crops (pulses, oilseeds and vegetables) in Rabi 2017-2018, how farmers, NGOs and Government agencies can work together for promoting food production and nutritional security among climate vulnerable small and marginal farmers of rainfed regions of India.
