JUNG ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER

SUSTAINABLE GIFT WRAP AND TISSUE

It is very important for us to preserve our natural habitat and resources for future generations. We take special environmental concerns into account throughout the entire chain of production and are committed to manufacturing in the most resour- ce-friendly way possible to avoid or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

JUNG Verpackungen GmbH manufactures exclusively in Germany. Germany has the world‘s strictest statutory regulations regarding environmental protection and the conservation of resources. Therefore JUNG is guaranteed to follow the most stringent environmental standards. Even since the start of the company in 1969 JUNG has been taking action to minimize the effect that company-related activities and products have on the environment.

This responsible attitude led us to adopt a comprehensive environmental protection policy in all areas, both commercial and industrial. Our products are developed and produced with the environment in mind, to minimize our ecological footprint. We make economical, efficient, and environmentally friendly use of natural resources, energy and materials and demand this from our business partners as well.

JUNG VERPACKUNGEN GMBH · www.jung-design.de · [email protected] · Tel. +49 7222 1007-0 IMPORTANT DETAILS

- All our gift wraps and tissue are made from 100 % paper materials, i.e. no compounds, plastics or other materials. Paper as a nature based material is „ecological“ per se.

- We use exclusively 100 % recycled or FSC® certified papers from German or European mills, i.e. short transportation distances from the mills to our factory.

- All foil materials for outer packaging have been switched to recycled Polyethylen.

- All our tissue papers are acid-free and chlorin-free.

- We source our energy from European Hydropower plants = „Green Energy“.

- Our recycled paper is certified with the „Blue Angel“ = official German eco-label.

- We operate a very modern printing and converting facility, i.e. very low waste percentages, low energy consumption. The factory has the ISO 9001-2015 certification, which requires and adheres to fixed regulations regarding waste reduction.

- Our production waste is recycled.

- We use Bio-alcohol inks and waterbased inks.

- We operate a fully integrated air-treatment system in the printing department.

- The air from our air treatment system is used to heat the buildings and used for the drying processes on the printing presses.

- Minimization of energy consumption via optimized air supply, regenerative heat recovery, production of cooling waters, some examples:

● In May 2020, our machine cooling system was converted to use well water. The total investment was approximately 50,000 euros. The project was carried out in cooperation with the state of Baden-Württemberg. With the new cooling system we are saving around 80,000 to 100,000 KWh of electricity per year. This corresponds to a reduction in CO₂ emissions of around 45 tons per year.

● We have reduced the temperatures of the thermal oil from 160 to 120 °C.

● We have optimized the dry air volume in the printing machines, so that less air must be warmed up.

● We have raised the cooling temperature from 14 °C to 16 °C and will start in 2019 to use well water for the cooling so we don’t need energy for cooling.

● We have reduced the air compressor pressure from 8.5 bars to 6.9 bars to save approx. 15 % from energy for the production of the compressed air consumption.

● We have invested in a new color management system in order to significantly reduce ink waste percentages and ink consumption.

● We are constantly improving procedures and machine standards in order to reduce energy consumption and waste percentages.

JUNG VERPACKUNGEN GMBH · www.jung-design.de · [email protected] · Tel. +49 7222 1007-0 Target areas for improvements we are currently working on:

Papers: We are permanently looking for new raw papers containing a certain percentage of recycled fibers that at the same time can fulfill the technical, tactile and visual requirements our customers and also our production ask for. The restrictions are that most of the recycled materials are not very good quality and often not very white. In gift wrap there are more solutions because the higher paper weights enable the mills to produce recycled papers with acceptable tear resistances. Whereas in tissue, given the low paper weights, it is much more difficult to find recycled alternatives that are tear resistant enough to allow print and converting at acceptable speed. And very often the recycled tissue papers are of very low quality and not suitable for usage in luxury packaging. In close cooperation with a German JUNG recently introduced two options for recycled that are of very good quality.

It has to be said too that „recycled paper = good paper“ is not always true. A paper made with virgin paper , but pro- duced under modern circumstances, can be environmentally more favorable compared to a recycled paper with de-inked and chemically treated fibers. Inks: Improving the ecological impact of the inks is not easy because we already start from a very solid base. We are using Bio-Alcohol and water based inks from certified German manufacturer. All inks adhere to the REACH standards. The waste air treatment installed in our factory ensures the best possible procedures. We are working closely with our ink suppliers to find potential improvements. Production: Reducing the ecological impact in production means lower energy consumption, lower waste percentages and shorter pro- duction times in printing and converting. A task force under the guidance of our technical manager, Ulrich Jung, is currently working on improving these aspects. Packaging materials: All packaging materials we use adhere to the standards of EC directive 9462 and FECO and RESY standards. Transport: We work exclusively with transport companies that use modern vehicles with low emission ratios. We are currently discus- sing further improvements with our major transport partners.

Stock paper grades for gift wrapping paper

Currently we offer 18 different raw papers for the production of gift wrapping papers. All paper grades are either FSC® certified or 100 % recycled, certified „Blue Angel“.

The papers are sourced mostly from German paper mills that adhere to the strict German environmental regulations. Material alternatives for Gift wrapping paper The question is if there are alternative materials available that could help to reduce the ecological impact.

Currently there are only a limited number of raw papers suitable for gift wrap on the market. The paper mills claim to subs- titute wood based cellulose pulp with alternative materials, for example „grass“, „sugar cane waste“ or even „stone dust“.

But it has to be clearly stated that these alternatives are not per se better than cellulose pulp. They always come with a disadvantage, by its look, touch, availability or price. Some examples: ● Paper made with „Bagasse“

● Paper made with „Grass“

● Paper made with „Stone dust“ (containing 20 % HDPE plastics)

(Original samples of these material alternatives available on demand)

Currently we offer 6 different raw papers for the production of tissue papers. All paper grades are FSC® certified.

The papers are sourced mostly from German and Spanish paper mills that adhere to the strict German environmental regulations. Material alternatives Tissue paper There are not many material options available in tissue paper to replace fresh fiber cellulose. Due to the low paper weight it is very difficult for the paper mills to achieve an acceptable formation of the paper when using recycled fibers. The 100 % recycled tissue papers are of very poor quality and not suitable for usage in luxury packaging. The tissue papers containing a certain percentage of recycled fibers are better, but still don’t achieve the same level of whiteness and tactile feel as the tissue papers made from 100 % pure cellulose pulp.

It has also to be stated that fresh fiber tissue papers are produced at significantly higher speed on the . So less energy is needed to produce the same amount of paper. In addition the tissue paper mills state that it is beneficial for the environment not to use recycled fibers as wastewater pollution due to de-inking is avoided. Some examples: ● Tissue paper made from 75 – 80 % recycled pulp

● Tissue paper made from 85 – 90 % recycled pulp

● Tissue paper made from 100 % recycled pulp

● Tissue paper made with 10 % of Jute fibers
