By JUSTIN MIEZENBEEK

Hamilton Old Boys played a perfect brand of wet weather rugby at Albert Park on Saturday, running away in a conditions-defying high scoring game 37-14 in Waikato Premier Rugby. Driving rain fell all day, and if anything only get heavier as the game wore on, making any kind of expansive play near impossible. Both teams tried valiantly to produce some sort of spectacle, but handling errors rendered their attempts futile. Hamilton Old Boys wasted no time signalling their intentions, kicking for the corners and attacking the host’s set piece. An early pushover to No.8 Rupeni Tamani got the visitors going early before Sports midfielder Falelima Siinei pounced on an Old Boys error. He toed the ball through and scored by the posts, with the try duly converted by first five- eighth Nathan George. More scrummaging woes put Sports further in the hole as a tight head was scooped up by Tamani, who crashed over the line extend their lead to 12-7. Te Awamutu women’s soccer team scored their first league win of the season at the Stadium on Sunday when they defeated Melville 3-2. Iona Love featured prominently in all the home team’s goals, setting up one and scoring two herself. In the fifth minute of the game, Love passed the ball between several defenders to striker Katie Foulkes who calmly fired the ball into the back of the Melville net from the edge of the penalty area. The hosts went to the break with a 1-0 lead that was cancelled out soon after the second half restart when Melville scored to level the game at 1-1. Five minutes later Love won the ball in the Melville half of the field and from long range sent a shot over the keeper’s head and into the goal to put her team back in front 2-1.
