Bible Study Outline

THEME: COVENANT WITH THE LIVING GOD SUB-THEME: Family and Covenant with the Living God TOPIC: Family and Covenant with the Living God TOPIC: The Essential of godly family - Unity TEXT: Psalm 133; 1 Cor. 1:10 - 17

AIMS: i. to know that unity is one of the fruits of a godly family ii. to see the effect of unity in a godly family

INTRODUCTION: The Christian family as a part of the Church should not allow division in itself. There should be no division between children and parents. In the Corinthian Church, factions became the ‘little foxes’ that destroyed the hedge around it. Apostle Paul was quick to address the situation, having great regard to the havoc factions can cause - 1 Cor. 1:13.

STUDY GUIDE:

1. What does this sentence mean “united we stand, divided we fall” with reference to family life?

2. Explain the beauty and strength of a united family according to these passages: Psalm 133; Gen. 11:1 - 6; Acts 2: 1-2, 41

3. What are the dangers of disunity in a family? Amos 3:3; Matt. 12:25.

4. Mention some causes of disunity in a godly family and in the Church of God and possible ways to tackle it. Matt. 18:15; Lk 17:3-4; Acts 6:1-4; 15:7,12

CONCLUSION: A family, church, community or nation can only achieve greatness in the atmosphere of unity. Therefore, Christians should love and respect for others’ opinions because, where God rules, every family members’ opinion is welcomed and respected.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Families, be united! A broom stick breaks more easily, whereas a bunch of broom is harder to break.

MEMORY VERSE: Psalm 133:1

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

SPIRITUAL TONIC FOR THE WEEK Matthew 7:7

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you”.

My Father and God, You are the only One who supplies the needs of mankind and never fails. As I look up to You in prayer open the heaven upon my life and bless me. When I ask according to Your will, let me receive. In my seeking may I find my heart desires. When I knock, open to me the doors of divine favour, mercies, victory, and upliftment. Establish me in righteousness so that I may receive the fulness of joy as I daily make my request to You in prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR Heavenly Father, what a privilege and joy it is to have the freedom to draw near to Your throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find help in time of need. We thank You for the days of our lives - the past, the present and the future - they are all in Your hand. Father as the days get darker and wickedness increases, we ask that Your presence will go with us in all our journeys; grant us wisdom and courage to face the time and tides of this year, empower us with Your strength and make us victorious in all our battles - physical and spiritual, through the merit of the Captains of our Salvation, Jesus Christ our Lord. (Amen)

SOUL FOOD 24/2021

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests…” -Ephesians 6:18

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Communication is a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviour. Also, in the art of warfare, Military communication is the transmission of information from reconnaissance and other units in contact with the enemy and the means for exercising command by the transmission of orders and instructions of commanders to their subordinates. It comprises all means of transmitting messages, orders, and reports, both in the field and at sea and between headquarters and distant installations or ships. Military communication thus plays an important role in warfare. The military side which has better communications than the opposing side is likely to be victorious in battle. Similarly, in the spiritual battle, the art of communication with the Commander in Chief is key to being victorious. To be armed with both defensive and offensive weapons is good but maintaining a link with the Commander is also important and not negotiable. Apostle Paul did not lose sight of this in the list of the full armour of God. He gives all the armour to fight with and crown it with the means of spiritual communication which is Prayer offered in Spirit. He says: “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests…” Ephesians 6:18

In the battle that we face against the kingdom of darkness, God has not left us without help. We fight from a position of victory in Christ and have the Holy Spirit inside of us. We have spiritual weapons and armour to fight against every attack of the enemy and to advance the kingdom of God. Prayer offered in Spirit - the seventh piece of armour activates these other weapons in the panoply and brings us to the position of victory in Christ when face to face with the enemies because the purpose of prayer is to enable the person praying to gain a direct experience of the recipient of the prayer.

Offering prayer in Spirit is approaching the throne of grace in humble and devout intercession and supplication entirely on God’s terms, not ours. I need to say here that Prayer offered in Spirit does not refer to speaking in tongues or any other charismatic experience. It simply means to pray according to God’s Word and according to his promptings, in other words, it is the opening of our lives to the filling of the Holy Spirit and pray according to His leading. The Bible says: “And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we do not know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. (Romans 8:26&27 NLT). Hence, praying in the Spirit is an indispensable part of the Christian life as it connects the believer with God and cultivates a vital relationship with the resurrected and reigning Lord Jesus Christ. Prayer is not so much the articulation of words as the posture of the heart. John MacArthur says: “To pray in Spirit is to live in continual God-consciousness, where everything we see, and the experience becomes a kind of prayer… In other words, our life becomes a continually ascending prayer, a perpetual communing with our heavenly Father.”

The disciples of Jesus expressed their desire to pray in the Spirit in Luke 11:1; they said: “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” If we are going to win the battle of life, we must learn how to pray in the Holy Spirit without ceasing. We must return to it throughout the day like a hacking cough, and like an army launching continual military assaults. We must train ourselves to live in God’s presence i. e. bringing every thought and concern before the Lord. This is necessary for our spiritual battle.

The armour of God as given by Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:10-18 represents attitudes and actions that believers must practice to be victorious on the spiritual battlefield. As we have discovered in this series, it includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit, and Prayer offered in Spirit. No Christian soldier can win without them.

Apostle Paul unequivocally enjoins believers to: “…be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (Ephesians 6:10-13).

I urge you because of the Lord’s mercies, let us strive to possess the full armour of God, not lacking in any, and let us fight on in the battle against the world, the devil, and sin. The days in which we live are evil and perilous, only those who are protected by the full of armour of God can come out victorious. It is my fervent prayer that you will be victorious in Jesus’ name. Amen
