REQUIREMENTS FOR A FIRST APPLICATION OR RENEWAL OF A SPANISH AT THE CONSULAR SECTION OF THE EMBASSY OF IN OTTAWA

A Spanish passport is a that enables a Spanish citizen to leave and enter the Spanish territory. Spanish nationality is the pre-requisite for obtaining one. Before renewing your passport, it must be confirmed that you didn’t lose your Spanish nationality if you voluntarily became a Canadian citizen. is for 10 years for those older than 30 years, 5 years for ages between 30 and 5, and 2 years for children under 5. In cases of passport theft or loss, the validity shall be limited to the validity date of lost or stolen one. Spanish residents abroad can request a Spanish passport at a Consular Office where they are registered. Applications and pickups of Spanish passport must be made in person in order to verify an applicant’s identity. Note: renewals will only be processed when the validity of the previous passport is less than 6 months on the day the application is made.

A Spanish citizen registered at the Consular Section of the Embassy may apply for a regular Spanish passport by booking an appointment ON-LINE and providing the following:

1. A signed passport application form, provided on site when an application is made. 2. When applying for the first time, a Spanish Birth certificate must be provided bearing a stamp that its issuance is for the only purposes of obtaining a Spanish passport, as well as a signed declaration surrendering (if that’s the case) the following Spanish identification: (1) Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE), or (2) Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión Europea, bearing a Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE)

3. For those born outside of Spain who are applying for renewal of a Spanish passport, they must present the passport to renew and a Spanish Birth certificate (no more than six months old) issued by the Spanish Consulate General where their birth was recorded. 4. In case of loss or theft of a Spanish passport, a Canadian Police report, or a signed loss/theft declaration form which will be provided on site when applying for a new Spanish passport. 5. A 32 x 26 mm recent color photograph with a clear, smooth and uniform background, taken from the front and without dark glasses or any garment that would prevent a person from being identified. Photograph dimensions for Canadian passports are also accepted. 6. CAN $45.60 (as of July 5th, 2018) in a certified check or in cash. 7. In the case of minors or persons with disabilities, a consent form must be signed in front of a consular officer by the parents or guardians, and provide identification as such.

The completed application form will be verified by a consular officer as well as the applicant who will sign it. A receipt with a tracking number will be given to the applicant once payment has been completed.

Passports are printed in Spain and they usually take 2-3 weeks to arrive.
