2.5. Diagnostic Notes **Adult**

Body elongate. Elytra with striae, costae, or both. Head and prosternum not excavated to receive antennae. Pronotum with side margins. Pronotal disc strongly transverse and explanate at sides.

**Larva - Family diagnosis**

Usually cylindrical to slightly dorsoventrally flattened, sometimes with abdomen enlarged (physogastric); lightly sclerotized except head, legs, tergite 9, sometimes all visible tergites. Head prognathous with epicranial stem short or absent; frontal arms V-shaped, lyriform, or sinuate; median endocarina absent; frontoclypeal suture present, distinct. Antennae 3-segmented, third segment digitate. Ocelli usually present, usually 5 on each side, sometimes absent. Mandibles apically bi- to tridentate, with mola tuberculate, reduced or absent, prostheca absent, mandibles symmetrical. Ventral mouthparts somewhat retracted. Maxillary articulating area well developed; mala rounded or truncate, sometimes with uncus. Labium with ligula, palpi 1 or 2-segmented. Hypopharynx only slightly sclerotized. Hypostomal rods short to moderately long, divergent, sometimes absent. Legs with coxae widely separated; tarsunguli bisetose, setae side by side. Meso-, metatergum, abdominal tergites 1 to 8 or 8 only sometimes with transverse row of asperities. Abdomen with tergite 9 pigmented or tuberculate, usually bearing paired, upturned urogomphi, usually with pit between them, sometimes with single median spine; sternite 9 simple; segment 10 transversely oval, ventral or posteroventral. Spiracles usually annular biforous with short accessory tubes, sometimes annular.
