The Lost Sabals
The Lost Sabals Article and photos by Justen Dobbs, Riverside, CA In California, palmetto palms are not seen very often, whereas in Florida and the Carolinas , they are everywhere. The Mexican fan palm ( Washingtonia robusta ), which is native to Mexico, is our version of the palmetto palm (Sabal palmetto ). However, the Mexican Fan is much faster growing and a little neater looking, which destined it for landscape use in Southern California. Only a palm collector could tell them apart ; to the general public, they’re both fan palms. The palmetto is more cold -hardy than the Mexican fan, but in Southern California this isn’t a necessary feature. I have grown Sabal minor, S . mexicana, S. uresana, S. uresana x mexicana, S . causiarum, S . rosei, and S. bermudana . I knew long before I began growing them that they were notoriously slow. In general, my seedlings take about 6 months to germinate and 3-4 years to get to a 1 gallon size. Compare that to a Mexican fan , which can reach a one-gallon size in a year , it becomes obvious why palmettos haven’t become popular in California. Not all Sabals are slow growers though; Sabal “blackburniana ” (an invalid name and one impossible to apply to recognized species) has a reputation for being a Left - Sabal “blackbur - niana” growing in Southern California. Although this is an invalid name that cannot be linked to a recognized species, Sabals labeled with this name have a reputation for being relatively fast growing. Metamasius hemipterus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Why In 2006, larvae of Metamasius hemipterus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were intercepted by the Dutch NPPO on a consignment of plants for planting of Phoenix from Costa Rica. Considering the risk which may be presented by M. hemipterus especially for ornamental palm species, the NPPO of the Netherlands suggested that it should be added to the EPPO Alert List. Where EPPO region: Absent. It was intercepted by the Netherlands on a consignment of Phoenix plants from Costa Rica. There is also a record of this pest on imported banana material in the UK (Whitehead, 1991). Africa: Cameroon, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Nigeria. Asia: according to the CABI Crop Protection Compendium, M. hemipterus has a very limited distribution in Indonesia and the Philippines and is subject to phytosanitary measures. Introduction It well known that Anegada has globally important biodiversity. Indeed, biodiversity is the basis for most livelihoods; supporting fisheries and leading to the attractiveness that is such a draw to visitors. Over the last three years (2003-2006), a project was undertaken on Anegada with a wide range of activities focussing towards this Biodiversity Action Plan. From the outset it was known that the island hosts a globally important coral reef system, regionally significant populations of marine turtles, is of regional importance to birds and supports globally important endemic plants. The project arose following the encouragement of Anegada community members and subsequent extensive consultation between Dr. Godley (University of Exeter) and heads of BVI Conservation and Fisheries Department (CFD) and BVI National Parks Trust (NPT) who requested that funding be sourced for a project which: 1. Wade Department of Horticulture – Athens University of Georgia Most people associate palms with Florida and tropical islands and can not imagine them growing in Blairsville, Georgia, hardiness zone 6b. It’s unlikely we ever will be able to grow Miami’s Coconut Palms or Orlando’s Queen Palms in Georgia, but there are a number of species known to survive sub-freezing temperatures with little or no damage, thereby making them possible candidates for landscapes throughout Georgia as well as states to the north. Several of these palms are the basis for this study, which is being done in cooperation with the Southeastern Palm Society. Four replicates of eight palm species or cultivars were planted at the Mountain Research and Education Center on June 17, 2005. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the cold hardiness and adaptability of these palms to hardiness zone 6b. Growth measurements and winter injury will be documented over a 5-year period. Palms are reportedly most sensitive to cold injury while they are getting established, and they show increased cold hardiness as they mature. Therefore, winter protection will be provided during the first winter after planting. This will be accomplished by placing a hog-wire hoop over each plant and adding dry pine straw to a depth to cover the center spear (the most cold sensitive part of a palm). A few of the uppermost leaves will be left uncovered so that some photosynthesis can occur. The top and sides of the wire hoop will be covered with 3-mil clear plastic to shield the plants from cold winter winds. -

Palm weevils have been reported as a pest and red ring nematode vectors for several palms of the Arecaceae family. Rhynchophorus palmarum L (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a pest for coconut crop and other palms. It is vector of Bursaphelenchus cocophilus (Cobb) Baujard (Nematoda) etiological agent of Red Ring disease and other nematodes. Current methods recommended use of enemies and parasites in integrated pest management of Rhynchophorinae. In addition, mass trap reduce environmental damage. The objectives of our study on coconut plantations were: (1) to determine the efficiency of low expensive kariomones traps and (2) low expensive kariomones and pheromones traps using adult males; and (3) to examine R. palmarum using light and scanning electron microscopy searching for ectoparasites which can be proposed in integrated pest management. -

Zilberfarb, Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardener, Fairfax County, VA Reviewed by Holly Scoggins, Associate Professor, Department of Horticulture, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Introduction Native to the Southern United States, the Sabal minor or Dwarf Palmetto is a smaller and much shorter cousin to the familiar Sabal palmetto that lines the streets and palisades of cities in the Deep South, where the fronds were once cut to make ladies’ hand fans. Part of the Dwarf Palmetto’s native range includes the extreme southeastern portion of Virginia. As a result, S. minor is one of the most cold-hardy palms that can be grown in the Commonwealth of Virginia. S. minor features evergreen, deep blue-green fanlike fronds of one to three feet in length, depending on the age of the plant. A shrubby, clumping palm, it may form short trunks of one to three feet after many years of growth. At maturity,S. minor can range from six to eight feet tall and wide. Many specimens have endured Zone 7 and lower winter temperatures and being covered in thick ice and deep snow with little or no damage. Given the proper conditions and period of establishment, S. minor should be hardy throughout all Virginia zones. Thomas, Taxonomic Entomologist, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Plant Industry INTRODUCTION: The giant palm weevils of the genus Rhynchophorus Herbst are among the worst palm pests in the world. One species, Rhynchophorus cruentatus (Fabricius), is native to Florida and the southeastern US. Two other species, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) and Rhynchophorus palmarum (L.), are found in the New World and are considered to be threats to palms in Florida. Of particular concern is R. ferrugineus, known as the red palm weevil. It is a pest of coconut and other palms in its native range. Over the past three decades, its range has expanded into the Middle East, North Africa and Mediterranean Europe. It attacks many palm species, but is especially devastating on date palms. It recently became established in Curaçao in the Caribbean, placing it ever closer to Florida. In each case, it is suspected that the weevils travelled with imported palms. In January 2010, the federal government prohibited the importation into the United States of live palms belonging to 17 genera. IDENTIFICATION: Identification of adult palm weevils is straightforward as they are the largest weevils in NorthAmerica, ranging from about 1 to 1.8 inches (25mm to 45mm) in length. A. General Discussion Historic resources are both archaeological sites and historic structures. Per Chapter 267, Florida Statutes, ‘Historic property’ or ‘historic resource’ means any prehistoric district, site, building, object, or other real or personal property of historical, architectural, or archaeological value, and folklife resources. These properties or resources may include, but are not limited to, monuments, memorials, Indian habitations, ceremonial sites, abandoned settlements, sunken or abandoned ships, engineering works, treasure trove, artifacts, or other objects with intrinsic historical or archaeological value, or any part thereof, relating to the history, government, and culture of the state.” B. Agency Responsibilities Per State Policy relative to historic properties, state agencies of the executive branch must allow the Division of Historical Resources (Division) the opportunity to comment on any undertakings, whether these undertakings directly involve the state agency, i.e., land management responsibilities, or the state agency has indirect jurisdiction, i.e. permitting authority, grants, etc. No state funds should be expended on the undertaking until the Division has the opportunity to review and comment on the project, permit, grant, etc. State agencies shall preserve the historic resources which are owned or controlled by the agency. Regarding proposed demolition or substantial alterations of historic properties, consultation with the Division must occur, and alternatives to demolition must be considered. -

Final Report South Carolina State Wildlife Grant SC T-F16AF00598 South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) May 1, 2016-June 30, 2017 Project Title: Northern Yellow Bat Roost Selection and Fidelity in South Carolina Mary Socci, Palmetto Bluff Conservancy (PBC), Jay Walea, PBC, Timothy White, PBC, Jason Robinson, Biological Systems Consultants, Inc., and Jennifer Kindel, SCDNR Objective 1: Radio-track healthy Northern yellow bats (≤ 10) captured by mist netting appropriate habitat in spring, summer, and fall 2016, ideally with at least 3 radio-tracking events in each season. Record roost switching, and describe roost sites selected. Accomplishments: Introduction: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the roost site selection and fidelity of northern yellow bats (Lasiurus intermedius, syn. Dasypterus intermedius) by capturing, radio- tagging and tracking individual L. intermedius at Palmetto Bluff, a 15,000 acre, partially-developed tract in Beaufort County, South Carolina (Figures 1 and 2). Other objectives (2 and 3) were to obtain audio recordings of bats foraging in various habitats across the Palmetto Bluff property, including as many L. intermedius as possible and to initiate a public outreach program in order to educate the community on both the project and the environmental needs of bats, many of which are swiftly declining species in United States.
