Most people who picture picture him as a grizzled, hard-bitten slayer. The archetype though a subject for a different article for the barbarian warrior we know and love from countless works of fantasy over the past eight decades. Queen of the Black Coast was originally published in Weird Tales in Their quest leads them afoul of a group of cultists claiming to be blessed by the Black Stones. The latter portion was, in my opinion the finer. We rejoin our fateful lovers on board The Tigress with their relationship having been several years long at least. They find themselves at the mouth of the Zarkheba river, feared by those who sailed the black coast and the denizens of the black kingdoms. When return it did, it was awash with blood, and the crew had been slain in detail, save one, driven mad by the events. She felt like a pirate queen and I was suitably surprised by the fact that she actually was more clothed Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit the comic then in the original works. While the the comic was quite violent, it was not gratuitously so, and was completely in keeping with the tone of The Hyborian Age. Though his first two stories V13 were good, as he moved further away from the source material, he utterly failed to capture what might have been interesting about an extended "Black Coast". The stories of V16 are better than most. The story of the Black Stones is nice dark fantasy, but they're off the damned boat again, and the story is as shallow as ever. Surprisingly the adaptation of chapter 2 of the "Black Coast" that ends the book isn't much better. Where the story is poignant and interesting, it's only because of Howard's prose. So call it a failed experiment. The first volume V13 was worth reading, and perhaps this one V16but not the stuff in between V Jun 16, Rumi Bossche rated it really liked it Shelves: comics-graphic-novels. Brian Wood ending his very uneven Conan run on a high note. The artwork by Paul Azaceta is a fantastic fit in my opinion, also the second parts art is really good, something that could not be said by some of the other trades. Mar 07, Marko rated it it was ok. Brian Wood's stint at the helm of the Dark Horse's Conan series has been disappointing mostly because he's failed to grasp what Howard tried to say with his juxtaposition of civilization and Conan. In short, he's made Conan suffer from the same insecurities and self-doubts that torment the civilized man and the contrast is therefore nowhere to be seen. However, now that Wood turns back to original Howard material, his failings are a little bit less visible. The story hits the right cues and while Brian Wood's stint at the helm of the Dark Horse's Conan series has been disappointing mostly because he's failed to grasp what Howard tried to say with his juxtaposition of civilization and Conan. The story hits the right cues and while Wood revises Howard's original text, lessening its effect, he doesn't completely ruin the story. Conan is mostly as he should be. However, the unnecessary extra story tagged at the end of Belit's story is both unnecessary and once again a violation against Howard's Conan. The art style continues to disappoint. There's nothing there to persuade you to read an adaptation of Howard's story instead of the original. Shelves: conanhooplaimage. Hard to encapsulate what I'm really thinking here, so I'll start with the easy stuff. The art was stylized but very effective, brutal were it needed to be, brooding everywhere else. In terms of plot, this volume caps off one chapter of Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit Conan's life with sudden and, to me, somewhat shocking finality. Or did it? I'm still a little curious about the potential effects of those Black Stones But that will be for a future volume to Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit, unless it's a blind alley conjured up by my fevered imagi Hard to encapsulate what I'm really thinking here, so I'll start with the easy stuff. One of the worst of this series. Suffering particularly when compared with many of the far superior volumes, this almost rated but a single star. The first three chapters have some of the worst art I have seen to date, drawn by the vomit inducing Paul Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit. The not particularly inspiring story is totally overshadowed by the incredibly awful art. Everything is flat and the characters are all but unrecognisable and the whole thing is simply horrendously ugly. The Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit three chapters are muc One of the worst of this series. The following three chapters are much better by comparison, but to be honest they are merely rendered as substandard. Coming hot on the heels of Azaceta's ghastly work, Riccardo Burchielli does a much better job, so much can be Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit here. There is still very little to impress here though. The story is rather better, but this much more to do with Howard's original work than any treatment from Brian Wood. This is the end Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit a very poor run by this author. While I can understand what he was trying to do over the last few volumes of building background with the character of Belit and making her a character of significance to Conan, he did so in a generally very poor way. The climax just did not work and I felt let down. There was somewhat of a saving grace in the last chapter, which while not having much in the way of significant story did help to round off this arc and the Leandro Fernandez's art was probably the best in this volume reaching satisfactory standards. Very, very poor. Thank goodness there is a change of direction from here on. May 05, Douglas Koehne rated it liked it Shelves: comics-tpb. This TBP has the final two chapters of Wood's Belit stories alongside Conan, with the final few comics finishing up the actual Howard story of her death. These two arcs continue the cycle of not living up to the promise of the first six issues of the Queen of the Black Coast TPB, either in the writing, art, or coloring. Two things stood out to me as I finished these comics. Why do all these stories take place on land rather than out on the open Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit where Belit is truly herself. This seems to be This TBP has the final two chapters of Wood's Belit stories alongside Conan, with the final few comics finishing up the actual Howard story of her death. This seems to be lazy storytelling, easier to build plots and establish characters in a more typical environment. Invading Argos to plunder that city and sailing upriver to her doom make sense, but the first story arc in this TPB of following a treasure map inland - uggh. Absolutely makes Conan Volume 16: The Song of Belit sense. The second is the art. Twenty-five issues, a full twelve artists took part in drawing these comics. Becky Cloonan leads the charge with a grand total of four issues and was easily the best at capturing both Conan and Belit and their connection. Why not bring her back for the closing four issue concluding story to bookend the overall series? Instead we get Riccardo Burchielli and Leandro Fernandez - mediocre at best and a wilting conclusion to what should have been something more powerful to this critical Howard story. I won't go into the details on this TPB, too demoralized more than anything. We all know what happens, but I will be going back to the Marvel adaptation rather than this one when I want to revisit this story in comic form. Sep 07, Z.
