Rabbinic Reflections Beth Tzedec Shofar Rabbinic Reflections As the Seasons Change, So May We Change

By now, all of us are enjoying the change of seasons and the arrival of warmer weather. This is a welcome change and one we eagerly anticipate. Not all change, however, is greeted with such enthusiasm. Most of the time we are resistant even when we know if will

However, successful synagogues and institutions are those that build strong and meaningful relationships among members and between members and their leaders. Such a process requires people to realign their time and personal commitments to more deeply engage in such relationships. While the benefit, once again, is significant, many are deterred by the need to change aspects of their lives.

There is one shining and inspiring example of change that is intentionally and eagerly embraced. The members of this year’s Keruv (Conversion) class stand ready on Erev Shavuot to proclaim their acceptance of Judaism and their new affiliation with the Jewish People. Some have made dramatic changes from their previous religious practices while others are reaching a goal that they have sought to accomplish years earlier. All of the members of the Keruv Class have made a commitment to change and they reflect the journey of Ruth whose allegiance to Naomi became the exemplary model of conversion to Judaism.

Had it not been for Ruth’s faith in God and the Jewish People, we probably would not have known about her grandson, David the shepherd and poet, who became King of Israel and whose descendant will emerge on the scene as the long awaited Messiah who will reinstate the David throne and bring the Jewish people back to their ancestral home.

So, while it is oft said that change is inevitable, the real issue is how do we encounter change and shape it as best we can so that it brings blessing and joy to ourselves and others. I would suggest that beneficial change falls into three categories of concern: does it advance our spiritual growth, our awareness of God and Torah values, and does it lead us to perform acts of compassion and righteousness? If so, it will lead to further positive changes and improvements in our lives.

Please join me at Erev Shavuot services on June 9, 2019 and become inspired by wonderful examples of people whose lives have changed as they enter the

Cantor’s Notes Beth Tzedec Shofar

Cantor’s Notes

“Were the sky of parchment made, A quill each reed, each twig and blade, Could we with ink the oceans fill, Were every man a scribe of skill, The marvelous story Of God’s great glory Would still remain untold; For He, Most High, The earth and sky Created alone of old.” Thus opens the famous and enigmatic or liturgical poem of the Shavuot festival, Akdamut Milin. This lengthy Aramaic poem, ninety rhymed lines in all, functions as an extended poetic preface to the first aliyah to the Torah on the morning of Shavuot. Its forty-five couplets do not offer listeners a linear narrative but, rather, elaborate variously on God’s power and majesty, God’s Torah and its significance, and God’s people Israel, with a recurring focus on Israel’s enduring loyalty to the covenant symbolized by the Torah. Yet where does this rich and extremely complicated tapestry woven in tooth-breaking Aramaic come from, and why has it endured in our liturgy despite its allusiveness and opacity in both language and imagery? One answer is suggested by Rabbi Jeffrey Hoffman who argues persuasively that some of the communal attachment to this hymn may derive from the folkloristic “backstory” the poem and its author acquired in the 17th century. This story, preserved in Yiddish, describes how a wicked monk has murdered over thirty thousand Jews in the Rhineland through black magic. Seeking royal protection, the Jewish community of Worms approaches the king, who in turn summons the monk. The monk promises to cease his attacks on the Jews for one year, on the condition that at the end of the year, the Jews produce a champion to compete in a sorcery contest. Should the Jewish champion win, the monk will never again attack the Jews; should the Jews lose, the monk would kill them all. Despite searching for almost the entire year, no Jewish champion can be found. One night, however, a certain scholar learns in a dream that the savior can be found among the Ten Lost Tribes, across the mythical river Sambatyon. Rabbi Meir, the leader of the Jewish community of Worms, the son of Hazzan Isaac Nehorai and a contemporary of the great biblical commentator, Rashi, is asked to head the delegation that will seek to find the

6 Beth Tzedec Congregation June 2019

Beth Tzedec Shofar Cantor’s Notes champion. With only eight days to spare, the search party reaches the shores of the river. Since the river can only be crossed on Shabbat, otherwise its waters are too fierce to endure; Rabbi Meir crosses alone, so that only he incurs the guilt of violating the prohibition against initiating a boat journey on Shabbat. In the end, he locates a champion who does in fact succeed in defeating the evil monk, but Rabbi Meir must remain on the far shore of the river among the Ten Lost Tribes rather than violate Shabbat again. Lost forever to his community, Rabbi Meir composes the Akdamut as a gift to the Jews and askes that they recite it every year on Shavuot “for the sake of his name”, a name he ensured would endure because he embedded it in the poetic acrostic. Because of this acquired mythology, Akdamut Milin brings to mind the traditions around the most famous Rosh Hashanah piyyut, Unetaneh Toqef, which is also given a fantastical origin story crediting it to a martyr named Rabbi Amnon of Mainz. Yet maybe an even better parallel is with the . As I spoke about during the High Holidays, Kol Nidre has persisted more because of its musical qualities than because its language or content. The same can be said of the Akdamut. Its sweeping melody, like Kol Nidre, is said to be “from Sinai”, and apart from the Festival , the melody is never used again in any other service. It is therefore a highly anticipated moment in the liturgical year. As a result, between story and song, Akdamut Milin has become too potent to just fade away, no matter how obsolete its language and themes may be, and in the end, this poem is ultimately more than its words and more than its music. It is a delicate and enduring fabric that allows us to look through the eyes and hear through the ears of our predecessors in Torah and, like them, emulate their steadfast commitment to the Jewish way of life. Chag Shavuot Sameiach! A Happy and Blessed Shavuot to all!

Through the President's Lens Beth Tzedec Shofar Through the President's Lens A Message from David Inhaber

June is always a time when Synagogue Presidents begin to reflect on the successes of the past year. For me it is time

The Beth Tzedec AGM will take place on Wednesday, June 19th at 7:30pm. This is also an election year where we celebrate and honour long serving board members who have decided to step off the Board and make room for new board members. It is an opportunity to meet fresh and energized Board members all; looking to provide their ideas and offer their service to the Beth Tzedec.

This year, we have four long serving board members whose combined service and experience far exceed the age of our Shul. Board Members who served as Vice Presidents, Treasurers, Secretaries, Presidents and Past Presidents. Their accomplishments far exceed anything I can write down in this article and give it the justice it deserves.

We exist today because of these individuals and the passions they shared with all of us. These individuals have agreed to continue serving Beth Tzedec through committee work and I know I can call on them often. They will be missed at the board table but will still be around. Yasher Koach to Howard Cohen, Stuart Myron, Len Seidman and Markham Silver.

Our new members’ resumes are filled with hope and promise as we move towards 2020. Ian Cohen brings experience in the area of security. Dr. Gerald Pfeffer comes to us not just as a physician but as a parent in our Shul School and represents young families. Joey Tappenden, an employee at the Calgary Jewish Academy, has his finger on the pulse of children and youth programming and expertise in marketing and fundraising. Saul Prince is a regular shul attendee and is ready to lend a helping hand in membership and programming. I am looking forward to working with all our board members for the next two years.

We have had a good year.

We ran program after program. Our building was used for concerts, our annual Film Festival, Shabbat B’nai Mitzvahs, bible study, interfaith programs, Shul School, B’nai Mitzvah classes and all sorts of learning and development. Thanks to the continuing success of the National Minyan League and the dedication of our morning and afternoon/evening Minyannaires, we continued our time-honoured tradition of twice-daily prayer services. 8 Beth Tzedec Congregation June 2019

Beth Tzedec Shofar Through the President's Lens

We had community leaders in our Shul; the mayor, area councillors, MLA’s, and Members of Parliament. We had sports celebrities, Hollywood celebrities and local media in our building. When organizations needed rental space we opened our doors for them. Again we have a lot to be proud of.

And we look forward to doing even more next year!

This year we breathed new life into our Youth Committee and established a new Building Operations Committee. Our Fundraising Committee is re-energized and I’m looking forward to events coming up this year.

Our Board of Directors includes a President, four Vice Presidents, a Treasurer, a Secretary, our Past President and 10 Members at Large. As I remind all members, these are all volunteer positions. Portfolios are assigned to our volunteers based on the needs of our synagogue and the skills and preferences of our various leaders.

 Vice-President Lorne Pearl is our Ritual Chair  Vice-President Elliott Steinberg is our Membership Chair  Vice President Josh Inhaber is our Finance Committee Chair  Vice President & Treasuser Joshua Switzer is our VP Operations and our By-Laws Chair  Secretary Jeff Dworkin takes our meeting minutes. In addition, many of you see him on the Bima making weekly announcements when your President is travelling  Past President Maxine Fischbein is our Personnel Chair, Nominations Chair and Casino Chair

Our board members are very busy as well.

 Howard Cohen chairs our Beth Tzedec Memorial Park Committee  Eddy Lang chairs our Tzed Talk program  Helmi Switzer chairs the Past Presidents Council  Heather Lister and Deb Silver co-chair the Youth and Education Committee  Cheryl Shiell and all members of our Ritual Committee are here every Shabbat and throughout the High Holidays and Festivals handing out the honours and ensuring a smooth service  Markham Silver advises us on legal matters

Other Committee chairs include:

 Susan Inhaber, National Minyan League  Harvey Cyngiser, Film Festival Committee Continued...

 Donna Caplan, Hazak +55  Bob Shiell, Greeting and Security.

I’m exhausted just listing everything our volunteers do so well!

It does take a village of volunteers to operate a synagogue. We are blessed to have all of these talented members and volunteers as we move toward 5780.

Our lay leaders and volunteers are supported by a tremendous group of people who work hard, usually in the background. Our exceptional Executive Director, Max Lipsman, and his dedicated staff ensure that the building is clean and safe, that our programs run on-time, that our volunteers are supported and that congregants and members of the community feel welcome and safe.

Rabbi Osadchey and Cantor Russ are here for us, ensuring that our educational, ritual and pastoral needs are addressed and that our life cycle events are marked in warm and memorable ways.

Your commitment as a Beth Tzedec Congregant is what makes this all happen. YOU keep our lights on. YOU keep our doors open. YOUR participation breathes life into our Shul. Join us for our AGM and celebrate all that YOU have helped to create and sustain.

Inclusion at Beth Tzedec Beth Tzedec Congregation is dedicated to maximizing the joyous participation of all, including people with disabilities. Why Ten?

is a noun and (מִ נְיָן( The Hebrew word minyan means count or number. We need a minyan to say certain prayers that sanctify God. These prayers include the Mourner’s Kaddish, Kedusha, and Barchu. We also need a minyan when we read the Torah. This requirement is based on Vayikra 22:32: “I will be sanctified amidst the children of Israel.” This refers to an assembly of people. But why ten? One explanation refers to the biblical source of Numbers 14:27. Moses sent out 12 spies to scout the land of Canaan. When they returned, ten of them falsely reported that it was not a conquerable land. Only Joshua and Caleb did not join in their lies. God was extremely disappointed with the ten spies’ lack of faith in His abilities. He turned to Moses and Aaron, telling them: “How long will this evil ‘assembly’ provoke [the Jewish nation] to complain against Me?” From here it is inferred that an “assembly” is comprised of ten. I am proud to welcome Lilah and Benji Silver to our group of minyannaires. As soon as they turned 13, they immediately joined The Menches on the Benches. This team was formed by their mom, Deborah Silver, and it was Lilah who came up with the name. I hope that other recent and future b’nai mitzvahs will follow their great example and choose to join a team and encourage their parents to join as well. Looking forward to seeing you in shul whenever you can make it. My apologies to Ben Zalmanowitz whose name I misspelled last month.
