TONIGHT'S GAME The Capitals face the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday in the second and final meeting between the teams this season. Washington won the first game 5-2 on Oct. 10. The Caps hold a 1-2-0-0 record against Vegas all-time and a 4-1 record in the playoffs.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT Where it was Won - The Washington Capitals return to Vegas for the first time since June 7, 2018, when the Capitals beat the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 to clinch their first Stanley Cup in franchise history. In the decisive Game 5 victory, Devante Smith-Pelly and Lars Eller scored 2:31 apart midway through the third period as the Capitals rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the final frame to win the Stanley Cup. The milestone victory came in the franchise's 43rd season of competition and their 3,701st game (regular-season and playoff) since joining the NHL in 1974-75. The Capitals ended the fourth-longest wait for an NHL team before winning its first Stanley Cup. The Capitals' win also ended a championship drought for fans of metro D.C. pro sports teams, who hadn't celebrated a championship since Washington's NFL team won the Super Bowl in 1992. Alex Ovechkin won the Conn Smythe Trophy following the Game 5 victory, the first Conn Smythe Trophy won by a Capital. Evgeny Kuznetsov led the series with eight points (1g, 7a), while Ovechkin and Smith-Pelly led the Caps with three goals each. Holtby earned all four wins for the Caps, recording a 2.62 goals against average and a .916 save percentage in the series final.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS King of Shots - After recording six shots against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, Alex Ovechkin is now four shots shy of becoming the ninth player in NHL history to record 5,000 shots. Should he record four shots in tonight's game, he will reach the milestone in 1,030 games, 185 fewer games than Marcel Dionne, who holds the record for the fastest player to reach 5,000 career shots. Ovechkin is the only player that ranks on the NHL's all-time shots list that has played fewer than 1,050 career games. With a 4.86 shots per game average, Ovechkin leads the NHL in shots since 1994-95, 10 seasons before Ovechkin made his NHL debut. Since Ovechkin's debut, he has taken 1,557 more shots than Eric Staal, who ranks second in the NHL in shots taken since 2005-06, and Ovechkin has led the NHL in shots in 11 of his 13 full seasons in the NHL. Ovechkin's 19 goals this season lead the Capitals and are tied for third in the NHL. With his most recent goal, Ovechkin passed Jarome Iginla and Joe Sakic (625) for sole possession of 15th place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. Ovechkin now sits 15 goals shy of passing Dave Andreychuk (640) for 14th on the NHL's all-time goals list. Since the 2005- 06 season, Ovechkin's 626 goals are 201 more than the next highest goal scorer (Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby: 425) and 233 more than the third highest scorer (Minnesota's Eric Staal: 393). Among the top 20 goal scorers all-time, Ovechkin's 0.61 goals per game ranks second (Mario Lemieux: 0.75 goals per game). holds the NHL's all-time record for goals scored (894) and has played 458 more games than Ovechkin. Should Ovechkin play in 458 more games and maintain his 0.61 goals per game rate, Ovechkin is on a 905-goal pace. Ovechkin has recorded a point in all 15 of the Capitals' wins this season, the only player on the roster to record a point in every win. Additionally, Ovechkin is on an eight game point streak (7g, 5a), tied with Tom Wilson for the longest point streak this season.

Super Carly – John Carlson recorded two assists against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, giving him 29 points on the season (5g, 24a) and 362 points (82g, 280a) in his career. Carlson passed Mike Green (360 points) for fifth place among Capitals defensemen on the franchise points list. Carlson, who ranks third all-time among Capitals defensemen in assists, is now 55 points shy of passing Sergei Gonchar (416) for fourth place among Capitals defensemen in points. Carlson’s two assist effort marked the 47th time in his career he’s recorded at least two assists in a game, and the 18th time he’s recorded at least two assists in the last two seasons. That’s the most multi-assists games by any defensemen in the NHL over the last two seasons. Carlson’s 29 points (5g, 24a) are tied for second in the NHL among defensemen and his 16 primary assists lead all NHL defensemen. Carlson has been on the ice for 35 goals at five-on-five this season, which leads the Capitals and is tied for the second most in the NHL. The Capitals are 12-2-2 this season when Carlson records a point. Since the start of the 2017-18 season, Carlson's 97 points (20g, 77a) rank first among all defensemen. Carlson has also led the Capitals in ice time in 20 of the 25 games he's played in this season, and his 25:34 TOI per game ranks seventh in the NHL.

Swede Nicky - Nicklas Backstrom recorded a goal against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, his second straight game with a goal (4g) and his third straight game with a point (4g, 4a). Backstrom's most recent goal was the 219th of his career, and he passed Mike Ridley (218) for the fourth-most goals in franchise history. On Nov. 28 against the New York Islanders, Backstrom passed Peter Bondra (825) for second place on the Capitals' all-time points list with his three assist performance, and his 613 assists are the most in franchise history. Backstrom’s 832 points (219g, 613a) rank first among players selected in the 2006 NHL Draft. In addition, Backstrom has 63 more points than Phil Kessel (Pittsburgh), who ranks second among the draft class and has played in 98 more games than Backstrom. Backstrom's 33 points (10g, 23a) lead the Capitals and are tied for eighth in the NHL. Additionally, Backstrom, who has 10 goals in 26 games this season, is on pace for 31 goals this year, which would be two shy of his career high (2009-10).

Streaking Willy - Tom Wilson scored a power play goal on Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks, marking his sixth-straight game with a goal and eighth-straight game with a point, both the longest goal and point steaks of his career and both the longest by a Capital this season (Ovechkin is also on an eight game point streak). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Wilson's six game goal streak is one of six occurrences by a Capital since 2000-01 and the first six game goal streak since Alex Semin's six game goal streak set in 2009 (Feb. 26 through March 8). The Capitals' record for most consecutive games with a goal is nine games, both achieved by Alan Haworth (1985) and Mike Gartner (1987). Wilson has 14 points (8g, 6a) in 10 games, including at least one point in nine of 10 games played this season. Since his return, Wilson is tied for sixth in the NHL in points and tied for fourth in goals. Wilson's 1.40 points per game ranks sixth in the NHL among players with at least 10 games played this season.

That Time of the Year - Over the last four seasons, the Capitals are 37-10-9 in the month of December. That's the most wins and points (83) by any team in the NHL during that span. Additionally, the Capitals' 171 goals for and their 119 goals allowed during that time frame are highest and the lowest total, respectively, during that span. In his career during the month of December, Braden Holtby 32-10-8 with a 2.37 goals against average and a .923 save percentage, his third-lowest goals against average and tied for his second highest save percentage for any month (April: 2.11 goals against average and .932 save percentage, March: 2.32 goals against average, November: .923 save percentage).

Additional Capitals Notes Power Offense - The Capitals' 94 goals rank fifth in the NHL, and the Capitals have scored three or more goals in 19 of their 26 games this season, including 10 games with five or more goals. The Capitals recorded five or more goals in a game 17 times last season. In games where the Capitals scored three or more goals, Washington is 14-2-3.

Strong on the Dot - Nicklas Backstrom won 20 of his 28 face offs taken against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, the most by a Capital in a single game this season. Backstrom's 20 face off wins are tied for the fifth most face off wins by any player in the NHL this season.
