Over the last 38 years, Channel Islands has grown from a local grass-roots operation to a cutting edge organization, catering to the best surfers in the world. It started with hard-core and quality in mind and these guidelines have brought us through three decades of constant change in the surf industry. Channel Islands will shape the new millennium Channel Islandswith innovative designSurfboards and quality as our main focus.

“The driving force behind Channel Islands Surfboards is the demand on design created by the world’s greatest surfers, allowing for the highest performance surfing possible. To provide the most dedicated surfers with the most advanced, performance designs is my passion” - Al Merrick, Designer/Shaper

In July of 2006, Channel Islands Surfboards was acquired by Burton Corporation. This is a marriage of two like-minded companies; both being privately held organizations focused on rider-driven product and manufacturing the best possible equipment available. At a time when the surfboard industry was undergoing massive changes, the added resources brought to CI from Burton allowed us to renew our focus on design and board building in our home of Santa Barbara . CI promptly moved to a larger facility just blocks from Rincon Del Mar, setting the foundation for developing, testing, and building boards in Santa Barbara for many years to come.

computer pre-shapes “Computer pre-shapes allow the surfer to get the closest possible board to my original designs. The end result is a better, truer board for the surfer. One of the hardest things for a shaper to do is replicate a magic board from a raw blank, much less try to change it slightly to get a different feel. This is where the milling machine provides for a proven and reliable starting point for each design. Kelly, Bobby, Dane, Taylor, Rob and all CI team ride boards generated from my computer Channel Islands Computer Pre-Shapespre-shapes that I slightly alter to render feedback on my design ideas. This provides me with instantaneous feedback. After working with the team on various shapes, I will finish a redesigned master board that fuses team feedback for the entire year. The master is then input to the computer that controls the milling machine. From this point on, orders will be cut (pre-shaped) by the machine according to the specifications set by the master and changed based on customer needs. Boards are then hand-sanded by finish shapers in Santa Barbara that combined, have over 200 years of shaping experience.

The real beauty of using the machine is that a board I develop for a team rider can be expanded or contracted to work for surfers of different sizes and abilities. Before the computer, doing this would have been impossible.”

Glassed with epoxy resin, using a new patented technology which releases built up gas thus reducing delamination. Al has been testing his designs in this technology for five years and the result is an extremely high performance surfboard, providing a very lively feel and riding slightly more buoyant than a standard polyurethane board.

34 custom order THE FIVE “V” Al's hi-performance shortboard release duringCustom 2005 was a product of continued research Ordee with the world's top professionals such as Tim Curran and Kalani Robb. More nose and tail rocker than any design over the previous two years, combined with a flat to single concave bottom contour, provides for both speed and maneuverability. Narrow nose moves the wide-point back to accommodate quick explosive back-foot surfing styles. A board that needs to be ridden vertical. See your local dealer to custom order.

RM MODEL Due to popular demand Al has brought back Rob's 2001 square tail. Less nose area, soft forward rails, a pulled square tail with added tail rocker make it well suited to the lighter and quicker surfer. See your authorized dealer to custom order.

RETRO QUAD An exact copy of Al's personal 1982 four fin. Stated by Al to be one of his favorite boards of all-time, this design was dusted off for those looking for a different approach. Al has added a trailing fin, making the Quad fin setup changeable to a thruster, a twin, or a twin finner.

MTF Twin Finner Designed for smaller surf: Low rocker makes the board extremely fast, twin fin setup equates to a loose feel, while small stabilizing fin keeps the board solid in the pocket. Heavy cult following.
