TRACING

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF Your objective is to trace the attached Oldstyle Garamond using a pencil. This is a typical Old Style face, having very little contrasts between the thicks and thins, heavily bracketed serifs, and oblique stress. The letterforms are open and round, making the typeface extremely readable. The capital letters are shorter than the ascenders of the lowercase letters.

Claude Garamond was the first person to make a business of selling of his type to others. A true typographic innovator, he was instrumental in the adoption of roman typeface designs in France as a replacement for the commonly used Gothic or fonts. His designs were exceptionally popular for a very long time (almost the of their day).

ABOUT GARAMOND • It was probably in the late 1520s that Garamond was approached by the Parisian scholar-printer to cut a series of Roman- new roman types. Garamond’s Roman first appeared in Paraphrasis in Elegantiarum Libros Laurentii Vallae, by Erasmus, printed by The basic letterform style so Estienne in 1530. That year Estienne produced several other books with Garamond’s type. The first complete showing of the types called because it is derived came in 1531. from inscriptions on Roman monuments. • Typographic scholars have long debated the design origins of Garamond’s types, but there is a general agreement now that they derive from the type cuts for in by .

• Garamond was a friend of Geofroy Tory, the first French royal printer and a notable force in the aesthetic development of the printed book.

• Garamond had long been regarded as one of the type designers par excellence of the century that followed Gutenberg’s invention of type. His roman were designed with such perfection that French printers in the 16th century were able to print books of extraordinary legibility and beauty.

’s most noted accomplishment was the development of a Roman typeface that moved away from the calligraphic forms of the day. His letters moved away from mimicking the traditional hand lettered forms and towards a refined, accurate, con- sistent form. With simplicity and careful blending of letters into legible, classic forms, the type allowed tighter word spacing which resulted in a more even visual tone when printed. Garamond understood there were more lowercase letters on the page and there- fore paid special attention to their design. The lowercase letters are as beautiful as the uppercase and he started a trend to using lowercase letters in book titles where previously only capitals had been used.
