The Fourth Sunday of Easter is also known as “Good Shepherd Sunday” and “World Day of Prayer for Vocations” when we pray for vocations. The readings throughout the fifty days of the Easter season aid our appreciation of God’s merciful love through the Paschal Mystery: the suffering, death and rising of Jesus. On Easter we recalled that in dying, Jesus destroyed our death and in rising He restored our life with God in eternity. The (Divine Mercy) met us in the upper room for a renewed friendship with Jesus through His merciful love expressed in the Eucharistic feast. Last Sunday called our attention to the opportunity that Jesus gives us for a recommitment following the example of Peter who, in-spite of the denial, was given a second chance. This Fourth Sunday of Easter invites us to meet with the

Good Shepherd. It is also an invitation for us to nurture our relationship with Him by LISTENING to His voice.

On Good Shepherd Sunday, that is “World Day of Prayer for Vocations”, we pray for vocations (call) to the priesthood and religious life. Strictly these are for those invited to ordained ministry, whom the Lord Jesus calls to shepherd in His name. In general it could include all who act in place of shepherds. “Without priests there will be no Eucharist,” that is, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity through which Jesus, the Good Shepherd, feeds His flock sacramentally. In the Old Testament God shepherded His people beyond all wants, according to Psalm 23. This Old Testament image of the good shepherd finds fulfillment in Jesus who goes in search of us, shows compassion and sees us “as sheep without a shep- herd” (Matt 9:36). Above all He lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:11). As a shepherd, Jesus acknowledges the sheep, “my sheep hear my voice, I know them and they follow me“ (John 10:27). Thus He knows us by name and treats each one of us as though we were the only one who ever existed. That is to say, He gives them eternal life and no one can take it away from the sheep.

Vocation strikes at the core of eternal life. The word vocation is derived from Latin VOCARE, where we derive words like; vocal; voice; volume etc. It simply means to call. In the Church there are two sacraments of vocation, through which God calls us to eternal life, namely, Matrimony (Christian Marriage - in the Church) and Holy Orders (religious and single lives). The Fourth Sunday of Easter however concentrates on vocations to the Priesthood (Deaconate) and Religious Life. Do you think God is calling you to the priesthood or religious life? The priesthood makes the Eucharist alive and is also at the service of other sacraments. It reveals Jesus the Good Shepherd who leads His flock to eternal pastures.

Together let us pray that God should touch the hearts of our children allowing them to consider giving themselves to the Lord in the Priesthood and Religious Life. Let us also pray for marriages so that couples may see their matrimony as an expression of Christ’s love for His spouse, the Church, a response to the Good Shepherd’s (God) call for them to come to eternal pastures.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Godwin

Henri Nouwen had this to say about our relationship with our spiritual leaders as shepherds:

The Shepherd and the Sheep Spiritual leadership is the leadership of the Good Shepherd. As Jesus says, good shepherds know their sheep, and their sheep know them (see John 10:14). There must be a true mutuality between shepherds and their sheep. Good leaders know their own, and their own know them. Between them is mutual trust, mutual openness, mutual care, and mutual love. To fol- low our leaders we cannot be afraid of them, and to lead our followers we need their encouragement and support. Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd to show the great intimacy that must exist between leaders and those entrusted to them. Without such intimacy, leadership easily becomes oppressive

Loving Our Spiritual Leaders Religious leaders, priests, ministers, rabbis, and imams can be admired and revered but also hated and despised. We expect that our religious leaders will bring us closer to God through their prayers, teaching, and guidance. Therefore, we watch their behavior carefully and listen critically to their words. But precisely because we expect them, often without fully realizing it, to be superhuman, we are easily disappointed or even feel betrayed when they prove to be just as human as we are. Thus, our unmitigated admiration quickly turns into unrestrained anger.

Let's try to love our religious leaders, forgive them their faults, and see them as brothers and sisters. Then we will enable them, in their brokenness, to lead us closer to the heart of God.

Laying Down Your Life for Your Friends Good Shepherds are willing to lay down their lives for their sheep (see John 10:11). As spiritual leaders walking in the foot- steps of Jesus, we are called to lay down our lives for our people. This laying down might in special circumstances mean dy- ing for others. But it means first of all making our own lives—our sorrows and joys, our despair and hope, our loneliness and

experience of intimacy—available to others as sources of new life. One of the greatest gifts we can give them is ourselves. We offer consolation and comfort, especially in moments of crisis, when we say: “Do not be afraid, I know what your are living and I am living it with you. You are not alone.” Thus we become Christ-like shepherds Fourth Sunday of Easter Page 3

Vocations Corner: World Day of Prayer for Vocations

Although we ought to pray for Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life everyday, today is a very special day because it is the Annual World Day for Prayer for Voca- tions. It is a day to recall how prayer has borne fruit in our own lives and to joyfully pay it forward for men and women throughout the world who have yet to discern their call. So too it is a day to be filled with gratitude for all that God has done in our lives. It is a day to thank God for creating us out of love and in turn for having a plan for the lives of every soul that walks this earth.

When I was a seminarian, I remember that complete strangers would frequently come up to me and tell me that I was in their prayers. This gave me so much joy and con- fidence because I knew that I had a whole army of prayer warriors backing me up as I continued forward in my de- sire to follow God’s will each day. TODAY you have an opportunity to be a part of this army for billions of people throughout the world that either do not know yet what God is calling them to or that don’t even know that they should be striving to follow God’s plan in their lives! So I ask you to PRAY, PRAY, PRAY in a special way today and know Montini Catholic School has a few slots open in our that it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep it up tomorrow and FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN program.
