17-1670 Grand Theatre ad-Ev1b.indd 1 2017-08-17 10:01 AM love the holiday season — a time I for sharing, giving, reflecting, and rejoicing. It is a time for being closer to family, a time for embracing the begin- ning of winter, and a chance to count the final days as the year comes to close. It’s a magical time of the year. For me, there is no better way to cele- brate the holiday season than to attend a theatrical performance of A Christmas Carol. Charles Dickens wrote this story almost 175 years ago and it resonates to this very day. Its endurance is unquestionable and the reasons for this are many. First of all, the universal messages abound: a clear call for us all to be charitable, loving, and caring. The story acts as a reminder for some (and a wake-up call for others) to strive to live a full and compassionate life. As well, it is a gentle reminder that our life is shaped by our past, refined in our present, and available for redefining in our future. The story also has the incredible ingredients for a theatrical event: smartly drawn characters, ghosts, spirits, fantastical elements, and even imaginative time travel. This story invites singing, dancing, and laughter while at the same time it manages to pull at your heart. It is my belief that A Christmas Carol is one of the greatest stories ever written. Returning home to as the new Artistic Director, I thought a great deal about which play I would choose to become my Grand Theatre directing debut. I decided to present something with which I have a great, long history. I’ve directed over 15 theatri- cal productions of this story, including the very first production I directed at Catholic Central High School when I was in Grade 9. It was 30 minutes long and ran for two or three performances. This time I’ve written the adaptation myself, infusing my partic- ular understanding and whimsy into this beloved tale. Happy holidays to you and your family from all of us at the Grand Theatre.

We would like to acknowledge the history of the traditional territory in which the Grand Theatre operates. We would also like to respect the longstanding relationships of the three local First Nations groups of this land and place in Southwestern . The three First Nations communities closest in proximity to the Grand are the Chippewa of the Thames First Nation (part of the Anishinaabe), the Oneida Nation of the Thames (part of the Haudenosaunee) and the Munsee-Delaware Nation (part of the Leni-Lunaape). A Christmas Carol is a classic tale of holiday tradition. It’s been loved by audiences both young and old for generations. With timeless lessons about the importance of family and kindness, it’s one of the season’s most well-known and celebrated stories.

For more than 30 years, London Life has supported The Grand Theatre because we truly value their dedication to sharing the magic of theatre with the community. This year, we’re proud to sponsor A Christmas Carol and look forward to experiencing this reimagined tale. We hope you enjoy the show! spriet stage, november 28 to december 30, 2017 opening night december 1 a christmas carol By Charles Dickens Adapted and Directed by Dennis Garnhum

TITLE SPONSOR DIRECTOR'S NOTES

When I set about to write my own adaptation of A Christmas Carol I had a few key ideas in mind: I wanted to use the elements of the story to create a spectacle —a holiday event overflowing with surprises. I decided that using Christmas carols throughout was a lovely way to enhance and weave the story together. You’ll notice that all songs are introduced in an intentional way: a boy sings as he walks through a silent graveyard, the employees of Fezziwig sing and act out their annual tradition, a spirit sings as she floats through the air. You’ll notice too that in the future section of the play that there is no singing. That’s on purpose. All forms of joy are gone. And of course, we have a triumphant finale using a beautiful period-appropriate song called “Still, still, still.” More than anything though, I have always thought the best way to understand A Christmas Carol is to celebrate the extremes: bumbling Fezziwig makes us laugh with his silliness, Belle breaks our heart as she tries to hold on to love, Spirit of Christmas Future scares us and challenges us to wake up, all while a man named Ebenezer Scrooge confronts the mess of a life that he has created and is offered the chance at full redemption. It’s the combination of all of these powerful extremes coming together that I think are vital in any theatrical production of A Christmas Carol. While I was writing the play a few summers ago, I was stumped by how to create the scene where Fred gathers his friends at a Christmas party and they play a name-guessing party game. I was frustrated by the formality of the party and so I decided to take a break in writing. It was a hot sunny day and so I jumped in my kayak and went for a paddle. I put on headphones and shortly thereafter Joni Mitchell’s song “River” came on. The lyric “I wish I had a river I could skate away on” washed over me. And that’s how the idea of turning this scene into a skating party was born. I raced back to my cottage and wrote the scene. The production had its anchor: a winter wonderland where snow and ice abound. It seemed to be a lovely Canadian touch while honouring the spirit of the original. I also added the idea that Scrooge was even miserly about the environment around him; all that terrible snow and cold. It seemed to me a lovely opportunity to warm his cold heart as the play progressed. We all have a choice to accept or resist what the world offers. By the end of our production, Scrooge accepts the snow and the cold and by this gesture accepts the life he has. It’s a subtle hint to us all: if you find winter too cold, head to Victoria Park and put on some skates, enjoy the lights, and embrace this beautiful, beautiful life we are given. dennis garnhum director and adapter

It all starts with a vision, evolves into a sketch, and comes to life in the wardrobe department. This adapta- tion of A Christmas Carol, one of the biggest productions in the theatre’s history, features Costume Designer Kelly Wolf’s vision of a mix of traditional Victorian styles with ghostly apparitions. There are many challenges that arise in the process of costume building. Wardrobe Cutter Kathryn Sherwin transforms the designer’s drawings into pat- terns which are then used to build the costumes seen on stage. For this show, she had to determine how to build a costume to allow for LED lights in some cases, or a harness in others. After the designs are set, a series of meetings and discussions happen between Lisa Wright (Head of Wardrobe), Kathryn Sherwin, and the Designer, before any garment is built. Any new materials need to be sam- pled in advance so the final look is sure to mesh with the designer’s vision. For this show, Designer Kelly Wolf said, “All of the spirits are other-worldly and the actual lighting aspect is inspired by bioluminescent crea- tures. Think deep sea and cave creatures that give off their own light.” For example, the Spirit of Christmas Present costume is a farthingale (a hooped petticoat), with LED lights running through plastic tubing, bloom- ers worn underneath, and a sheer dress overtop so the lights shine through. A Christmas Carol is set in the 1800s, which means there are many Victorian coats and trousers. Waist- coats require finesse, as there are many steps that go into making one, from designing and cutting the pattern, to basting the pieces, to tailoring and fitting. Victorian trousers are different than today’s pants as they have a grown-on waistband with a “v” slit in the back and are often worn with braces (Victorian suspenders). A Christmas Carol has a wonderful mix of period costuming that is warm and familiar alongside newer, more innovative styles that are intriguing and edgy. constanza davila wardrobe apprentice NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE CHARIOTS OF FIRE Stage Adaptation by Mike Bartlett Screenplay* by Colin Welland Coming April 2018 Spriet Stage NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE “Fabulous theatricality... thrilling and irresistible” the times, london

London Life, along with Great-West Life and Canada Life, has deep roots in our communities. In London, our history dates back to 1874. Over many decades, individuals, families, businesses, and organizations have counted on us to deliver on the promises we make. Our companies help to build a brighter future for communities across the country by providing financial support focused on education, health and wellness, arts, social services, and commu- nity development. We strive to be socially responsible and take a proactive approach to ensure we make a positive impact in everything that we do. This includes looking at ways to support innovations and better models for helping Canadians, along with creative, coordinated, and compassionate efforts aimed at making lasting change. Over the years, our companies have maintained a culture of giving. Together, we contribute at least one per cent of pre-tax profit to support non-profit, charitable, and community organi- zations. In 2016, our companies supported 900 initiatives across Canada, including more than 100 in London. We believe in the importance of the arts, and that arts programs enrich lives and strengthen the cultural and economic fabric of commu- nities across the country. Among the primary recipients of our funding are major arts groups like the Grand Theatre that advance music, theatre, dance, and the visual arts, along with organizations that work to make the arts more sustainable. Our primary focus is on programs with social impact: outreach initiatives that target youth-at- risk, educational programs for school groups, and programs that make the arts more accessible for all audiences. A Christmas Carol Title Sponsor

When we approached London Life about our plans to support the London Food Bank during the run of A Christmas Carol with our #humbugtohunger campaign and learned of their longstanding support of families in London who accessed this much needed service, their generosity really came as no surprise. London Life, Great West Life, and Canada Life employees continually do so much for so many with incredible passion and heart. We have always been proud to partner with London Life, and this year, more than ever. deb harvey executive director, the grand theatre

We also look to support the communities where we live and work through our participation in major campaigns like the United Way and food drives. In London, we have a long history of supporting the London Food Bank with our annual spring Food Drive. In the last two years, we have tripled the amount of food collected, for a total of nearly 90,000 lbs over the last four years. During a time of year when food bank stocks are at their lowest, our employees generously give their time and support to an initiative that makes a huge difference for families who rely on local food banks. Our support of the Grand Theatre, United Way, and the London Food Bank are three examples of how we are actively involved in the local community. We are proud to have an office in London filled with employees who share their time and resources with their neighbours to build a stronger community together and a stronger London for all.
