General admission at the door is $8 ($6 for students and seniors 60+). Young people 12 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Jim's music study and performances have taken him far and wide to gather knowledge and experience to further his interest in diverse musical forms rang- ing from Celtic ballads, American Folk, Country, and Pop, to Gospel. Whether performing solo or joining a band in concert, Jim Malosh is a skilled artisan of music that spans generations, genre and geography. At the Box Factory concert, he will be performing ballads of two great Folk, Pop, and Country music singer /songwriters – John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot. Both of these giants matured in the same era and fol- lowed somewhat parallel paths. Both spent time improving their craft on the West Coast but found their success through their associations on the East Coast. Both prolific songwriters, they moved freely between the various styles and have had an undeniably huge influence on American music. by Barbara Stodola

The wingspread Quadracci Pavilion (right) is joined by a pedestrian concourse to the original Milwaukee Art Museum (left) designed by Eero Saarinen.. Before Milwaukee had its Calatrava- designed, wingspread Museum of Art, it had the elegant lakefront building designed by Eero Saaarinen and, even more importantly, the Bradley collection of art. Mrs. Harry Lynde Bradley was the kind of collector who bought what she liked and, luckily for the citizens of Milwaukee, she had the means and the know-how to apply her excellent taste to purchasing over 400 works of modern art. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the major donation given to the city by the Bradley legacy. In celebration, the museum has comprehensively reinstalled the collection on its fourth floor, overlooking Lake Michigan. The collection was begun in the 1950s when Mrs. Bradley and her husband, a Milwaukee industrialist, were walking along a New York street and spotted a painting by Georges Braque in a gallery window. Braque was a French cubist painter, friend of Picasso, and highly priced -- not the sort of work to catch the eye of a novice collector. However, Mrs. Bradley knew what she liked and, once recovered from the shock of the price-tag, the couple bought the painting. As the collection evolved, Mr. Bradley retained a “veto power,” but he left the artistic decisions to his wife. Consequently, the col- lection grew to reflect Mrs. Bradley’s personal taste, and it tells us as much about the role of the collector as it does about the his- tory of modern art. Mrs. Harry Lynde Bradley (1894-1978) was portrayed by artist Thornton Utz, as she was gazing out a window looking at the lake, or perhaps into the future.

A seldom-seen painting by Georgia O’Keefe is one of the twenty-two O’Keefe paintings given by Mrs. Bradley to the Milwaukee Museum of Art.

Mrs. Bradley acquired numerous pieces by Georgia O’Keefe. Her purchase of one O’Keefe painting set a record, the highest price ever paid for a living female artist. Another woman artist whose work appealed to her was Gabriele Munter, one of the founders of the Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider) in Munich. Munter lived for ten years with her fellow-student, Wassily Kandinsky. Her paintings, however, unlike Kandinsky’s fren- zied abstractions, were subdued compositions with flatly-paint- ed areas of color -- more closely akin to Paul Gauguin and the French Nabis. THE August 31, 2006 Page 15

“Boating,” a 1910 painting by Gabriele Munter, portrays the artist herself rowing the boat while her lover, Wassily Kandinsky, stands and observes.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German Expressionist best known for his harsh view of reality, is here represented by a style-conscious “Street Scene.”

French art of the early 20th century and German Expressionism were two of Kees Van Dongen’s “Woman the periods Mrs. Bradley was drawn to, With Cat” (1908) is one of the sensitive portrayals of women in but she avoided abrasive subject matter the Bradley collection. and tended to select pieces that were sen- sual and beguiling. Sometimes they had a poignant significance. “The Cock of the Liberation,” Picasso’s sprightly crow- ing rooster, was painted in 1944 to cel- ebrate the liberation of France from the Nazis; proudly facing the rooster is the Bradley dove of peace. Bradley Continued from Page 15 As the center of avant-garde art shifted to New York, Mrs. Bradley’s attention also shifted, and she picked up masterpieces of color-field painting by Ellsworth Kelly, Mark Rothko, Adolph Gottlieb, Helen Frankenthaler. The re-installation has opened up vistas with- in the interior, so that these large paintings can be viewed at a com- fortable distance. This breathing space has been made possible by placing temporary exhibitions in the Calatrava pavilion adjoining the original Milwaukee art museum The Bradley collection is focused on paintings, but the few sculptural pieces are stunningly displayed. One of the galleries over- looking the lake is devoted to the kinetic sculpture of Harry Bertoia. Another has a masterful marble piece by Barbara Hepworth, sharing meditative space with a pair of Barcelona chairs. From the very start, the Bradleys had determined that their col- lection would be a gift to the city of Milwaukee. The Saarinen-designed museum, completed in 1957 and superbly sited on the lakefront, provided a home for one after another of the donations. Eventually the art outgrew the space and, with a $1 million challenge grant from the Bradleys, enough money was raised for an addition designed by Milwaukee architect David Kahler. Mrs. Bradley viewed the place as an extension of her own home. She had large sofas brought in, custom-made rugs, a desk. In her later years she would visit the museum almost daily, write letters, pay bills, meet friends, and Joan Miro’s woman with a crown symbolically casts its shadow in the art collection left to the city of Milwaukee occasional- by Mrs. Bradley. ly host a large party for fellow-benefactors. Lisa’s husband Brian Czarniecki, two-year-old daughter Reese and Lisa’s mother Polly Liebig, Long Beach, were there to cheer her on during the jumping demonstration. After the jumping was finished, little Reese donned a helmet and demonstrated how comfortable she already is on the back of a horse. Equine Foundation Board Member Denise Foy started riding three years ago and “fell in love” with it. “It is very peaceful to be on a horse, focusing on doing certain things while riding,” Foy said. “It’s the place where the whole world goes away.” It seems one is never too young or too old to become passionate about horses and horse riding. Since a potential renter from California had just asked to see pictures of the facility the timing could not have been better. Sue has become our “Best Buy” of Long Beach liter- ally with contributions of the camera, TV, DVD play- er, and a microwave. Thanks Sue for you support and for thinking of us. This free event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sat., Sept. 16 and Sun., Sept. 17 at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Chellberg Farm and Bailly Homestead. Take a Step Back in Time A friendly atmosphere and hands-on experiences bring many visitors back year after year to this 30- year old festival. The music, demonstrations, and even the food revolve around a harvest time theme at a 19th century farm and an even older fur-trading post. Visitors can try their hand at old-time crafts, watch sheep-herding or shearing demonstrations, or just visit with volunteers in period costume to learn about the life back in “untamed” Indiana. Activities geared for kids include a “Children’s Corner” full of old-fashioned games, cornhusk doll making, and candle dipping. Three Stages Provide Plenty of Entertainment Three stages feature nearly non-stop performances of traditional music by local artists including David James, Save the Tunes Council, Banjo Bob, and Trois Canard. Animal demonstrations, storytellers, and dancers, including the always-popular Good Time Cloggers, round out the on-stage entertainment. Watch Demonstrations by Artists and Artisans Throughout the festival grounds, area artists and artisans will display their wares and demonstrate crafts and traditional activities. A small amount of the food offered there – you should see the sandwiches Sue Spitler, my food friend and cookbook author, told me about fantastic chocolate in LaPorte. At the same time, I was about to cover the long-standing Temple News Agency, also in LaPorte. Do you see why I write a food column so often, and cover so much area? The beginning of a new school brings with it a new Girl Scout year. New and returning girl and adult members are invited to share a great year of Girl Scouting with the Girl Scouts of Singing Sands Council. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confi- dence, and character, who make the world a better place. Membership is extended to all girls who accept the Girl Scout Promise and Law. To reflect the diversity of the United States of America, we give the highest priority to the inclusion of girls from currently under- represented populations. The Singing Sands Council offers Girl Scouting in a variety of ways; activity centers and in-school pro- grams offer Girl Scouting in a more non-traditional setting, while the more traditional troop is also offered. For girls who are always on the go, girls may register as a Juliette Girl Scout; a Juliette is indi- vidually registered and works with a mentor to expe- rience the Girl Scout Program on her own. In addition, a variety of programs are offered throughout the year for girls and/or their troops to attend. In the past these have included the Fall Festival, Hogwarts Habitude, Studio 2B Conference (for girls age 11-17), Pluralism Conference (for Junior Girl ENTIRE Scouts), Badge Days and more. During the summer months a variety of camping opportunities are avail- able throughout the council. Visit www.gsssc.org for upcoming programs in your area. The Girl Scout Program depends largely on adult volunteers who dedicate their time and heart to serv- STOCK ing girls. Volunteers are a necessity to make this program successful, without volunteers, we would strug- gle to serve every girl in the Singing Sands Council. Adult volunteers are needed for a variety of jobs; volunteers serve on our Board of Directors, short-term 20 to 30% off volunteers for one time events, to be troop leaders, to serve on troop committees and more. A Magical Musical Tour of Michigan City by Charles McKelvy

Nobody sent Natalie and me tickets to hear music by Mozart in Vienna or symphonies by Shostakovich in Moscow for our 29th wedding anniversary in August. So we opted instead for a short drive down U.S. 12 to Michigan City to “do” the entire Fifth Annual Michigan City Chamber Music Festival, or MCCMF. This year’s MCCMF, after all, was one big happy birthday party for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who was born in 1756, and Dmitri Shostakovich who arrived on the planet in 1906. So, of course, we had to go some- Portrait of the satisfied artist: Nic Would there be a Michigan City Orbovich in the middle of the where — anywhere — to hear musical tributes to those Chamber Music Festival without Michigan City Chamber Music two great masters. Sunny Gardner-Orbovich? Festival. And, being the penny-wise writer types that we are, we opted for Michigan City and the MCCMF which this year was held at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts and the First Presbyterian Church and featured (in order of appearance): Robert Auler on piano, Soprano Melisa Barrick, Rudolf Haken on viola, Gabriel Schlaffer on both viola and violin, Wesley Baldwin on cello, Zofia Glauhauser on violin, Melisa Barrick and her husband Wesley Baldwin accept the audience’s Nicolas Orbovich on violin, and acclamation after they and Nicolas Orbovich and Robert Auler, who are William King on clarinet. not seen, performed Shostakovich’s Romanzen Suite. Are we glad we took five drives to Michigan City this August? You bet your sweet Wolfy and Dmitri we were happy, thrilled and delighted to have attended all five concerts of what can only be described as a magnif- icently magical musical tour of Michigan City with the most heart-tugging destination being Shostakovich’s String Quartet which was performed with riveting pas- sion on August 16. As Wesley Baldwin, who is both Professor of Cello at the University of Tennessee and Melisa Barrick’s proud husband, explained, it was proper to think of the five-concert series as one concert with four inter- Wesley Baldwin performs Gyorgy Ligeti’s Sonata for Solo Cello. missions. Mr. Baldwin, who records on the Centaur label, made that statement on the fourth night when he and his colleagues performed works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Johannes Brahms at the First Presbyterian Church. “The fifth (and final concert on August 20) will be upbeat, but after tonight,” Mr. Baldwin quipped, “you won’t feel so good.” He was referring, of course, to Shostakovich’s dark and brooding “Romanzen Suite” and perhaps to the muggy weather outside. But after those moments of mourning, menace, and melancholy had passed, we loyal patrons reassem- bled in the church to hear Mssrs. Orbovich, Schlaffer, Haken, Baldwin, and King perform what Bill King called the greatest piece of music he knows: the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings in b minor by Johannes Brahms. Noting that Brahms had put down his pen by the time he was 58, Mr. King said the great 19th centu- ry composer picked it up again when he happened to Robert Auler at hear an exceptionally good clarinet player perform with work at the a summer orchestra. Brahms was so inspired, that he Lubeznik Center wrote four pieces for the clarinet, most notably the afore- for the Arts. mentioned Quintet. Mr. King noted that the work is not as dark as works by Shostakovich, “but it has lots of browns and dark reds, and it is an acceptance of a life fully lived. It is one of the great works in all the musical repertory,” and, he added, “it demands great maturity and rhyth- mic energy.” Then Mr. King and his colleagues played all four moving movements with precisely the “great matu- rity and rhythmic energy” required by Herr Brahms. Natalie was so moved by being in the “Brahms fog” that misty Friday night in Michigan City that she rushed up to Mr. King after the performance and actually kissed his hand. He modestly demurred, noting that the whole series was “symbiotic” meaning that an informed and engaged audience was as just as important each night as the trained and prepared musicians. As Wesley Baldwin said earlier in the week when an adoring fan said he and his colleagues were gods, “No, we’re not gods, we’re just people who get up early and work hard.” Bill King said it was truly an honor to travel from his post as Professor of Clarinet at Oakland University near Detroit to perform in Michigan City. “Something like this series would be taken for granted in New York where people who say they are working musicians are waiting tables and driving cabs to support them- Musicians (left to right) Rudolph Haken, Nicolas Orbovich, Gabriel selves,” Mr. King declared. Schlaffer perform Shostakovich’s haunting String Quartet No. 8. On Sunday, August 20, after the last notes of the final concert, appropriately called “An Afternoon of Chamber Music,” had absorbed into Gail Shapiro’s col- orful works of art celebrating life at the beach, our friend and flower arranger, Sally Carbiner declared: “They played that because they wanted to. And they had a ball.” She was referring to the grand finale for the series: the Quintet in E-flat Major for Piano and Strings by Robert Schumann. And she knew whereof she spoke, because Sally Carbiner not only teaches piano, but she plays it exceedingly well, particularly when she tack- les works by Schumann. And so, when it was all played and done, she shyly approached the great Robert Auler, who is Professor of Piano at State University of New York, and said: “Now I can die happy.” Even the score was tired after Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8. Musical Tour Continued from Page 95 Sunny Gardner-Orbovich just wished that the music would never die. As the celebrated teacher of art and music said during the final intermission of MCCMF ‘06: “This will be a happy ending, but it’s not so happy because it is the end. We wish it could go on and on and on. These concerts will always be offered free to the pub- lic, because we want to share this with everyone.” And, as her husband Nic Orbovich promised, “We will be back next year from August 11 to 19 with the same musicians and hopefully a couple more.
