  • Anchor Institutions
Transforming Times News from the Offices of Community Health, Equity & Wellness and Diversity & Inclusion Fall 2019/Winter 2020 Anchor Institutions: The Lift is Heavy, Yet Our Team is Anchored Well By Kimberlydawn Wisdom, M.D., M.S., Senior Vice President of Community Health & Equity and Chief Wellness & Diversity Officer at Henry Ford Health System Part of Henry Ford Health System’s mission is to bring measurable benefit, in increasingly more collaborative ways, to the communities surrounding our programs and services in southeast Michigan. As we broaden, develop and advance that mission, we embrace our role as an anchor institution and claim our responsibility to collaborate to ensure that our communities are safer, healthier, and economically strong. The anchor approach prioritizes local economic development through place-based investing, local hiring and purchasing, and is designed to drive substantial economic progress in our community. This forward-thinking pathway creates an environment where the health system and the community can grow and thrive. A founding and active member of the Healthcare Anchor Network since its inaugural meeting in December 2016, Henry Ford is collaborating with and learning from other anchor institutions. We are redefining ourselves and our anchor role, and it’s not just happening here – it’s happening across the country. In addition, we recently established a committee at the System level, the CHAnCE Council – Community Health Anchor Council Enterprise-wide – to join our corporate and clinical operations. This work is especially evident in the area surrounding Henry Ford Hospital, in the Downtown, Midtown and New Center areas of Detroit. Two major expansion projects that serve as examples of the System’s financial investment are the Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center and the Brigitte Harris Cancer Pavilion.

  • Healthgrades Hospital Quality Clinical Excellence Report 2013: Announcing the Top 5% Hospitals in the U.S
Healthgrades Hospital Quality Clinical Excellence Report 2013: Announcing the Top 5% Hospitals in the U.S. for 2013 We are pleased to announce the 262 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ recipients for 2013. This recognition places these hospitals in the top 5% of hospitals in the nation. During the 2013 study period (2009-2011), 262 hospitals showed superior performance in caring for patients in the Medicare population, as measured by objective clinical outcomes (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications) across at least 19 of 27 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures. These hospitals are recognized as Healthgrades 2013 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence recipients (see Tables 2 and 3). These 262 hospitals stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. While many hospitals have specific areas of expertise and high-quality outcomes in certain areas, these hospitals exhibit comprehensive high-quality care across clinical specialties. All Hospitals Are Not Created Equal: Hospital Choice Matters As shown in the American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: Healthgrades Report to the Nation, we’ve seen considerable improvement in hospital quality over time. However, quality disparities among hospitals persist, and hospital quality can vary *Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of significantly even within local service areas. MedPAR data for years 2009 through 2011 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients. Hospital choice can strongly influence patients’ odds of experiencing complications or emerging from their procedure alive and well. Study findings showed that there is wide variation in hospital quality across conditions and procedures: specific hospitals perform better than others in specific conditions and procedures.
