Could Queenstown become ZOOMtown? This year’s COVID-19 crisis created shockwaves, putting our personal health and safety to the test and severely disrupting the way we do business. The silver lining is that it’s inspired a lot of us to rethink the way we work. Necessity is the mother of adaptation and this disruptor has created the largest global “work-from-home” experiment in history which has fast-forwarded us through years of trial and error. Remote and fl exible working isn’t new to lots of people, particularly the self-em- ployed or digital nomads, who’ve been digitally mobile or part of globally distributed teams for years. But now others are seeing the opportunities and looking to adapt their business models. Let’s redesign the way we work and invest in the right tools and strategies to work smarter - not harder - for the health, wellbeing and sustainability of our people, business and Aotearoa. As our workforces become increasingly digitised, work from home (#wfh) or work from anywhere (#wfa) have become normal in our district. With good digital infrastructure, transport connectivity, a great lifestyle, co-working spaces and re- mote-friendly cafes, and existing remote worker communities, we could feasibly Sky City celebrated 20yrs in Queenstown on Friday. Michael Ahearne & Kate become a ‘Zoom Town’. If we diversify our economy we can focus more on our Gourdie from with Jonathan Browne local talent, target investment in start-ups and side hustles as well as tapping into the returning Kiwi ‘brain gain’ and promoting ourselves as a ‘workcation’ destination for those looking to combine work and holiday. But as always there needs to be a balance. We need to stay socially connect- ed because lockdown reminded us how much we value in-person interaction. There are some excellent tools and techniques for distributed teams to effi - ciently connect and communicate which we could learn more about. We could also shift some emphasis from our professional life to personal, such as ‘fl exing’ our schedules around catchups with family and friends, activities or community volunteering. Can we frontfoot our learnings from one of the most unusual years in histo- ry? RemoteTogetherNZ aims to do just that – be a conduit for accelerated learning, innovation and collaboration bringing transformative change…to you! The Queenstown Lakes-based festival (8-13 March) is the fi rst of its kind in NZ with the objective of bringing thought leaders and remote/fl exible working experts together to help Kiwis review, redesign and reset their strategies and business models for future success. We’ll also discuss opportunities for brain gain, side-hustles and the gig economy to help personal and organisational development. The programme features four learning pathways tailored to self-employed, re- turning Kiwis, small-medium enterprises, and larger organisations which include roundtable discussions, masterclasses and networking sessions. The Lake Hayes A&P Show is always an eagerly anticipated family event that takes place early in the new year, and for a time there was a real concern that 2021 would become a casualty of the virus. However, the organisers have received encouragement and support to press the go button on the 106th Annual Lake Hayes A&P Show which will take place on Saturday 9th January 2021 at the Lake Hayes Showgrounds. Better yet, this year entry is FREE for everyone! The Lake Hayes A&P Show is a fun day out for the family, set on one of the most beautiful Showgrounds in the country. Like all A&P shows it brings the town a little closer to the country and gives the Wakatipu community a taste of rural life. This year’s show has received fi nancial support from the Central Lakes Trust (CLT), QLDC events fund and sponsors including The Family and locals are the core of Lifestyle Retirement Village as principal sponsor. the Show and its heritage. Given how many absolutely disgusting buildings keep being given consent like the Mitre 10 building, those hotels disfi guring the view along the Kawarau behind the airport, not to mention the Bunnings building and ghastly hotel near it plus the Millenium, it’s a total tragedy that when something truly new and elegant is planned, it gets turned down. Do you feel like you have to please others all the time? Do you compromise your happiness and put others fi rst? When someone compliments you, do you respond with; “Oh thanks but it was in the sale, or it’s old, or no I haven’t lost weight it’s this top, it makes me look trimmer?” Do you feel that you have lost where you are going and who you really are? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then read on, let me explain what’s happening. The reason that you are pleasing others or as I like to call it a ‘people pleaser’ is because for a moment this allows you to feel fulfi lled when funnier, sportier, funkier they thank you, it allows you to feel for a moment what you want to and the list goes on, we feel constantly, happy with yourself. wish we were not us.
