420 West Pine Street, Missoula MT, 59802 406.542.0321 sfxmissoula.org 3 On Sept. 9, the will celebrate St. Peter Claver, a Jesuit who spent his life in the service of African slaves brought against their will to South America during the 17th century.

In 1610, Peter Claver came to Cartagena, , where he cared for the slaves arriving from Africa, in spite of his own Parkinson’s disease, living on minimal amounts of food and water, until his death in 1654.

Peter Claver has a special place in the hearts of our friends at our sister parish, Santa Rita de Casia, lo- cated in Cartagena.

In honor of his feast day, the Jesuit West Province is introducing CORE, Collaborative Organizing for Racial Equity. Over the next few months, we will be asked to take actions for equity as a parish and as a province. We welcome your ideas and your participation! Stay tuned!

ECOLOGICAL JUSTICE, Part 2

The Reality - how things stand – from www.jesuits.global

Creation today is crying out as never before, labouring to be set free (Romans 8). Today’s environ- mental crisis is impacting in a particular way on the poor and vulnerable. Action is needed urgently by Christians and by all people of good will. Whole nations and peoples need an ecological conversion if we are to be honest custodians of this wonderful planet. We can still change the course of history.

God’s Dream

Our faith is one that wants creation to be cherished and renewed. A whole new way of living opens up as a consequence of a personal and passionate relationship with Jesus. We get the grace to tran- scend ourselves (Laudato Si’, 208). We get new strength to care for others and for creation (LS, 217). We can live with a new horizon, embracing Jesus’ vision of the Kingdom of God, of a renewed and transformed world and ecosystem where we are all brothers and sisters, responsible to each other. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning- the sixth day. Genesis 1:31 4 “Who am I to judge?” - Francis

Pope Francis’ now famous line from a 2013 interview might seem to be at odds with this weekend’s readings. These twenty-third Sunday readings give us a main theme, namely, that of ‘Admonition’. Sounds harsh. The reality is that while God’s word speaks of our shared Christian responsibility towards correction, it also, in Romans, gives us the basis for understanding Christian admonition or rebuke.

Ezekiel is addressing the already departed exiles and is warning them of the impending destruction of Jerusalem. He gives us an idea of both communal and individual responsibility. In light of today’s COVID pandemic, this responsibility resounds in our hearts. Each individual must do one’s part for the betterment of the larger community. highlights, that despite the severity of the message, God’s concern is the possible conversion of the individual and therefore the group.

In Romans, Paul gives us the importance of understanding Christian freedom in terms of the law. Freedom is always grounded in love. And while love of neighbor is the most basic of Christ’s com- mands, it is often hard to practice fully. While the command to love one’s neighbor is central, we are also called to not harm others. Love respects the law but calls for much more.

The Gospel of Matthew outlines the steps needed to intervene with an offender in a community. The hope and desire is not punishment or shame, but conversion. A return to be a full member of the community. In particular, a member of a community grounded in prayer.

Pope Francis was clear that judging based on ideas, bias, or preference, cannot overturn an admoni- tion made in love. Indeed, love must always be the basis of all Christian conduct. It is good to re- member that when we judge another, we define ourselves more than the one we are judging.
