An introduction to our Exotic Burma group tour

With years of experience in operating tours to Burma, we have drawn on our indepth, first-hand knowledge of the country to create this new tour that focuses on indigenous tribes and cultures, remote towns and hill trekking. The tour may be of particular interest for those who have already visited the ‘must sees’ or for those more adventurous travellers who simply prefer the road less travelled. The tour starts in northern where the country converges with Burma and Laos, a region known as the Golden Triangle. From here you cross the border to Kengtung in Burma's far eastern corner to explore this quaint town nestled in the Shan hills. A day is spent trekking to nearby Ann, Palaung and Akha tribes followed by another day exploring the former British hill station of Loimwe and the colourful, bustling Kengtung market. A stay in the pretty hill town of Kalaw gives the opportunity for a little relaxation or further trekking, before travelling onto . From here you travel south by boat to the graceful and remote pagodas of Thar Khauk, hidden deep in Pa-O country. Travelling west via Rangoon, the tour takes in the ancient Rakhine capital of Mrauk U with fine examples of sandstone temples recalling its halcyon days. You also travel further afield along the Lay Mro River to visit the Chin tribes whose history is portrayed on the intricately tattooed faces of female elders. A mix of accommodation is used throughout the tour including some simple yet comfortable hotels; however any compromise is rewarded with an extraordinary insight into the life and culture of the Burmese people.

Climate The best time to visit Burma is between November and March. The weather is likely to be generally dry and hot throughout the day with temperatures dropping slightly in the evenings. At

Inle Lake it has been to known to be very cold first thing in the morning and in the evening. You may encounter some rain although showers are likely to be short lived. Mark’s profile After five years working at IBM, Mark headed off to spend time in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Malaysia. Mark’s trip was destined for a year-long adventure in Australia, but this was cut short after three months when he realised that had everything he had been looking for. He returned to Asia and relocated to southern Thailand for 12 months where he taught English at a junior school and stayed within some of the lesser known towns in the region. On moving back to the UK, Mark’s love of reportage photography took him along the media route working for both the regional and national press. Mark’s passion for Southeast Asia and first hand knowledge of the region coupled with his enthusiasm for photography meant that Audley Travel provided the perfect opportunity to keep in touch with the area. Since joining Audley, Mark has travelled extensively in Burma and again in Thailand as well as Indochina topping up his knowledge of the region and giving him the chance to enable others to see the culture, Mark at the Indein temple complex near Inle Lake architecture and diversity that captivates him. Burma introduction During its years of isolation Burma became frozen in time, capturing an enchanting country of geographical variety and natural beauty. A nation rich in culture, the friendly locals can be seen dressed in longyis and smoking cheroots. Their deep- rooted belief in Buddhism and spirit worship is evident in the many ornate pagodas and temples that sprinkle the area, from the Himalayan foothills to the jungles of Burmese girl with thanaka on her face the south. Burma has a great deal to offer, from archaeological wonders to beaches, hill tribe villages, crumbling colonial buildings and touring the that bisects this rural land.

Please note that Travellers Cheques are not accepted in Burma. Credit cards will also be of limited use as only a very few hotels accept them. Please ensure that you have enough US dollars cash for your trip in NEW dollar bills as hotels, shops, restaurants and money changers will not accept old or damaged notes.

Rangoon introduction Now known as Yangon, Rangoon is the former capital of Burma and still retains much of its colonial character. The grand buildings of the downtown area and the old mansions in the diplomatic quarter are clear testament to the former British presence. In contrast to this, the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda is perhaps the most vivid demonstration of how seriously the Burmese take their Buddhist faith, with a stream of devotees bringing offerings to the various shrines within the temple complex. No visit to Burma is complete without at least a few hours spent at the Shwedagon. The city has an eclectic mix of cultures and religions, with the golden spires of many ancient pagodas glistening in the heat of the day alongside modern-day Hindu and Chinese temples, cathedrals and mosques. The bustling streets and narrow alleys of downtown Rangoon capture the diversity of this intriguing city: tea-houses are layered with the smoke of cheroots, the markets of Chinatown burst with an unfathomable array of goods and the aromas of freshly-milled spices and freshly-cooked snacks are carried on a breeze from the Indian Quarter. Rangoon is well-known for its shops and markets, the most famous of which is the Bogyoke Aung San Market (or Scott Market), as well as for a burgeoning and well-respected art scene. Galleries and antique shops have been established in various parts of the city, presenting the visitor with many tempting shopping opportunities.

Sunday Visit to local school and orphanage 20 November, 2011 Shared excursion with driver and guide

After the devastating effects of Cyclone Nargis in May 2008, Audley wanted to Chatrium Hotel Royal raise funds to help a community affected by one of the worst natural disasters of Lake recent times. Our local agent in Burma helped us to identify a small primary school Breakfast is included in Paya Ngoto village which had been virtually destroyed and was in desperate need of a donor to help rebuild the school and move the 55 students out of temporary bamboo classrooms back into the main schoolhouse. After months of fundraising and the hard work of a local contractor and workforce, the school was completed and the children moved back into their brighter, larger and better equipped schoolhouse. This is a project that we are immensely proud of and we would like to encourage all of our clients to visit, particularly as so many generously donated and supported our fundraising efforts. A total of 62 children now attend the school on a regular basis, helping literacy rates in the area to increase significantly.

The Shwedagon Pagoda in Rangoon is ** Although the school will be closed for teaching on Sunday it will still be possible the holiest Buddhist site in Burma to visit the school and the surrounding area.

In the same area is an orphanage called Mingalar which is run by a local head monk. Before the dreadful cyclone in 2008 the orphanage had 100 children to look after. Within weeks of the cyclone that number had risen to over 500. A total of 20 monks and novices plus 10 volunteers provide a home and education for these 500 children in what has become a considerable logistical concern. Donations come in from the local community and from abroad but it is often a daily struggle to raise enough money to feed all the children. Audley, in conjunction with our local agents, have decided to help the orphanage. It is a short drive from the school at Paya Ngoto and is easy to combine into one trip. Lunch can be provided at the orphanage and visitors are encouraged to offer whatever skills they have, such as English lessons or computer skills, to the children.

The day would start by catching the local ferry over the Yangon river to the small town of Dala. Here a driver will be waiting to take you the hour or so to Mingalar Orphanage. Paya Ngoto village is a ten minute drive from here and you will need to walk for around five minutes from the road side through picturesque rural scenes to reach the school. You will then be met at the road side on the far side of the village for the drive back to Rangoon. Rangoon: Shwedagon sunset Shared excursion with driver and guide Late afternoon you will explore vibrant central Rangoon followed by an early evening visit to the famous Shwedagon Pagoda. You will witness the magical atmosphere as the sun dips below the horizon and darkness falls in this most holy of places.

Kalaw introduction

Kalaw’s climate is much more pleasant than the baking heat of the dry zone, although in the winter it can get quite cool at night and early in the morning. The town is set amongst a magnificent pine forest. Of the 111 houses built by the British in Kalaw around the turn of the century, a great many still remain in various states of decay and disrepair. Most are now occupied by favoured government or military officials, although some are still eerily silent, apparently undisturbed since their owners left 50 or more years ago. The former Kingswood school is now a military hospital, and the race track is very overgrown, but Christian services are still held at the Anglican Church and are apparently attended by educated by American missionaries. The old golf course is in a reasonable state of repair and it is possible to play a few holes or a whole round if you wish!

The best way to explore is by boat: in a day trip you can visit the various cottage industries such as silk weaving and cheroot rolling, watch blacksmiths and silversmiths at work and see the floating market that moves between the area’s villages on a five-day rota.

Rangoon introduction

Now known as Yangon, Rangoon is the former capital of Burma and still retains much of its colonial character. The grand buildings of the downtown area and the old mansions in the diplomatic quarter are clear testament to the former British Monks walk to the entrance of the presence. In contrast to this, the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda is perhaps the Shwedagon Pagoda in Rangoon most vivid demonstration of how seriously the Burmese take their Buddhist faith, with a stream of devotees bringing offerings to the various shrines within the temple complex.

Sittwe introduction

A former garrison town in the days of the British Empire, today Sittwe is a lovely, sleepy little tropical town. The area has miles of untouched beaches and many undiscovered islands lie offshore. The town itself is interesting to explore with the harbour area being of particular interest. The locals are friendly and welcoming to visitors who are a rarity in these parts.

The Sittwe market is not to be missed. There is a huge fish section and if you are there when they bring in a new catch the aromas can be particularly pungent! There is also a large area selling nothing but bananas. There are two main temples in the town; one shaped like the Shwedagon in Rangoon (Gyi Bay Chaun Paya), and one covered in little mirrors which make it glisten in the sun (Payagyi). You can also visit the Rakhine state cultural museum and a Buddhist museum in a small monastery.

Mrauk U introduction

Mrauk-U which straddles the Aungdat Chang river has the feel of a lost city. It is an archaeological site of vastly underestimated importance and also an area of great natural beauty set amidst rolling hills. The heavy rain during the monsoon makes One of the many hill-top temples in Mrauk U this region a haven for fruit growing and there are many verdant rice terraces dotted around the area. The farmers will smile at you as they work in the fields with some of the weirdest and wonderful temples in Southeast Asia as their back drop.

Our favourite is the moss covered Kothaung temple, often overrun with grazing goats. The town also has two very pretty lakes both close to the centre. The sightseeing is quite active, so you will need sturdy sandals (whatever you wear on your feet, you need to be ready to take them off to go inside the temple compounds).

Sunday Rangoon: Full Day Tour 04 December, 2011 shared excursion with your driver and guide

To begin your exploration of Rangoon we recommend you start with a visit to the Savoy Hotel, Rangoon National Museum. Although the museum is sparse in places, one exhibit worth Breakfast and dinner are paying attention to is the glittering Lion Throne of King Thibaw, an extraordinary included work of art which stands over twenty feet tall and is covered with carvings depicting scenes from Burmese mythology. Also of interest are the Mandalay Regalia, a collection of gem studded arms and displays on Burmese prehistory, crafts and musical instruments.

A visit to the old colonial city centre is also a must. Using the Buddhist temple of Sule Paya as your landmark, your guide will give you a great insight into the colonial architecture which makes this city one of the most exotic in Southeast Asia. The Sule Paya is rumoured to be over 2000 years old but has been rebuilt and repaired many times over the centuries. A hair of the Buddha is said to be held in the Colonial buildings, Rangoon central stupa and the golden zedi stands 46 metres high.

The afternoon takes you shopping for souvenirs at the large, covered 'Scott' (now renamed Bogyoke) market. Close by is the Holy Trinity Anglican church which houses a book containing the names of all the Christian soldiers who fell in the Burma campaign - a page is turned in memory everyday and you may look through the record if you wish. Services are still held in English and the priest will be happy to talk to you.

OUR ACCOMMODATION GRADING SYSTEM Your accommodation is described on the following pages. Please do not hesitate to call us if you require any further information about any of the properties. We classify accommodation into the following categories. These are for your guidance only, they are based on the opinions of our staff and are therefore quite subjective. Basic: Very primitive accommodation where we are not aware of anything better in the region. Simple: Clean and simple but limited facilities. Medium: A good standard of accommodation, reasonable range of facilities. First Class: A high standard of accommodation with a wide range of facilities. Deluxe: Superb accommodation with facilities and service to match. Opulent: The world’s most unashamedly luxurious hotels, resorts and lodges.

Accommodation 23 Accommodation

CHATRIUM HOTEL ROYAL LAKE First Class

This modern hotel is located along the shores of Kandawgyi Lake and offers 303 comfortable guest rooms. With a good range of facilities including a swimming pool and selection of restaurants, the Chatrium offers good value accommodation in the city and is within walking distance of the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Ch i H l R

PRIVATE HOTEL, KENGTUNG Basic

The Private Hotel is a simple hotel with not much character but it is well located on a quiet avenue and within walking distance of the town centre. The hotel is constructed out of local materials such as teak and pine. All superior rooms have ensuite facilities, air-conditioning (but it might not work!) and private verandas.

Our opinion: This is a basic hotel with simple amenities but fine for a few nights stay.

24 Accommodation Accommodation

AMARA RESORT, KALAW Medium

This colonial residence, originally built in 1909 and restored in 2002 in tradition and style, is surrounded by a cottage garden with ancient trees and brightly coloured flowers. Guests can expect spectacular views over Kalaw and the Shan Mountains from the 4 double bedrooms with open fireplaces. The dining room serves traditional Burmese or European food.

Our opinion: The most luxurious and atmospheric property in Kalaw, this colonial hotel is a great base to explore the local area and embark on some treks. The cooler air and tranquil forest atmosphere make this a great hotel to relax and lose yourself in a good book.

GOLDEN ISLAND COTTAGES, INLE LAKE Medium

Wonderfully atmospheric bungalows built in a traditional style on stilts over the lake. Golden Island Cottages is a cooperative project, run and staffed by the local Pa O people. Revenue from the property is utilised for development within the community. There is a good restaurant and on some evenings there is traditional Shan dance and music.

Our opinion: A wonderful place to stay but you are isolated. You cannot get a boat to the mainland after dusk.

Accommodation 25 Accommodation

SAVOY HOTEL, RANGOON Medium

A comfortable hotel with colonial charm in the heart of the capital. The hotel has an attractive restaurant and bar, extensive wine cellar and a large pool area where you can relax in peaceful surroundings.

Our opinion: A good standard of accommodation with adequate facilities noted for its character and relaxed, informal atmosphere.

NOBLE HOTEL, SITTWE Simple

The Noble is a small, 20 room hotel in the centre of Sittwe and is one of only a few hotels in the town. All rooms have air-conditioning and ensuite facilities. Sittwe is an interesting port town to explore before making the journey on to Mrauk U and the Noble is satisfactory for a one night stay.

Our opinion: Basic accommodation and the best available. Rooms are a little on the small size.

26 Accommodation Accommodation

MRAUK U PRINCESS, MRAUK U First Class

The newest property in Mrauk U covers 38 acres of land alongside paddy fields and a river creek. Each of the 21 Garden Villa Bungalows are the same size and offer gorgeous views west towards the sunset, yet each room has its own individual styling. The hotel will form a comfortable base for visiting Mrauk U's forgotten kingdom.

Audley has been supporting carbon reduction projects through Friends of Conservation since 2005 and in addition to this each individual department also supports a charity or charities of their choice with a yearly financial donation. These charities are close to their hearts and the team often chooses to fundraise to add to this amount. The Southeast Asia team have chosen to support Who Will, who work in Cambodia, and the World Land Trust’s project in Borneo. Please ask your specialist if you would like to find out more as in most instances they will have visited the charity themselves, or one of their colleagues will have.

About Who Will Introducing a new concept in childcare, Who Will is a charity that cares for orphans and disadvantaged children in Cambodia. In 2007 UNICEF estimated that there were approximately 600,000 orphans in Cambodia. There are many Non Government Organisations working in Cambodia that aim to help and look after these children. Who Will is one of those, but uniquely believes that wherever possible children should be raised in a family environment and residence in an orphanage should only be considered as a last resort. To make this idea a reality, Who Will are building a village, which is located approximately 30 miles from Phnom Penh. Ultimately the village will comprise of 10 family homes, two classrooms, a multi-use building (computer room, library, office and clinic in one), community hall and staff quarters. Each of the family homes will house up to 12 children and a house mother, who is responsible for bringing up her family of orphans. In the future as the project evolves the house mothers will be replaced with married couples. This will allow children to grow up in a real family environment and ensure that the children do not carry the unjustified stigma, which occurs in Cambodia of ‘coming from an orphanage’.

Children at playing between classes at the Who Will village

Audley and Who Will in the Future So far the charity has completed three of the houses and the children moved into their new homes in 2009. Fundraising is underway so that the rest of the village can be completed. For those who would like to see the project in action we can arrange for you to visit the village and donations are gratefully accepted by the charity. The Southeast Asia team at Audley will be fundraising over the year in order to add to our annual contribution to Who Will in Cambodia.

The World Land Trust (WLT) and their work in Borneo WLT is a UK charity, established in 1989, which works internationally to help create nature reserves, by funding the purchase of privately owned land that has high conservation value. They have identified land in the lower Kinabatangan flood plain area of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo that connects two already protected government owned reserves. The incredibly high levels of bio- diversity found in the Kinabatangan river basin is attributed to the seven distinct and different ecosystems found in the area, which provide a habitat and source of food for a vast array of animals and plant life. Of particular note are the endangered Bornean orang-utan, nine other species of primates including the proboscis monkey and western tarsier, the Bornean pygmy elephant and all eight species of hornbill. If this land is not purchased as part of this initiative, it will become another palm oil plantation. Palm oil is used in 1/10 products found in British supermarkets and is also a popular bio-fuel. The palm oil industry has allegedly been responsible for a 50% reduction in orang-utan habitat between 1992 – 2003. If this specific tract of land becomes a plantation it would create two separate “wildlife islands” unable to sustain viable animal populations, especially acute for the orang-utan. However, linking these areas up will create a much larger “wildlife corridor” helping to ensure the future prosperity of all species in this unique ecosystem.

Leopard Cat, Kinabatangan River basin, Sabah, Borneo

Audley and The World Land Trust (WLT) in Borneo The Southeast Asia team will be raising funds through various events and initiatives to help the WLT continue with land purchases in the lower Kinabatangan River basin. The first tract of land identified as a key purchase was recently secured by WLT having raised £343,000 for its purchase. Now they plan to continue this programme in this area of Borneo with new land acquisition targets in the pipeline in order to ensure the survival of this unique ecosystem and its threatened inhabitants.

If you would like further information about this WLT project, please speak to your Southeast Asia Specialist on 01993 838 100 or visit the WLT website www.worldlandtrust.org/projects/malaysia.htm
