It is expected that the operation of the aircraft maintenance hangars in the northern side of the airfield will start in 2014. This will affect the apron occupancy (up to 40% of the apron) as aircraft waiting for maintenance and repairs will be parked there. The aircraft that are currently parked there will be transferred to NSBalt LT Air KUN other sites in the old apron, which has already been overfilled with other KUN 2015-2016 7,241.00 operating aircraft; furthermore, the strength of the old apron paving is not sufficient for such change and would put aviation safety and flight safety at risk. In particular, this would make servicing of cargo aircraft (ILR76, IL96, Boeing 747) difficult due to their size and height. Normally such aircraft occupy several sites on the apron, with the time on the apron being 72 hours on average due to lengthy loading and unloading works. The project will involve the construction of an apron and a taxiway in the southern part of the airfield; the taxiway will connect the apron with the runway and the service way. Upon construction of infrastructure in the southern part of the airfield, cargo aircraft will be serviced there, whereas passenger and postal aircraft as well as aircraft arriving for maintenance will be serviced in the northern part of the airfield. Such allocation of aircraft would ensure full compliance of the airfield with the international flight safety requirements. It should be noted that the implementation of this project will enable KUN to use the land plots situated to the south from the airfield for further development of infrastructure in accordance with the Master Plan and to create an intermodal link with the Air Park in the Free Economic Area.
