Annual General Meeting & Awards Saturday 2 June

Next Sailing Committee Meeting: TBA

Mainsheet 538 2 May, 2018

Now our summer sailing season is completed, we are headed toward the winter series for all those diehards who brave the elements to satisfy their addiction. At the same time, it brings us toward our AGM and annual awards presentation, hotly contested by all. It is also the time to elect your General Committee, please consider how you might be able to contribute, all members are encouraged to nominate for one of these positions, nomination forms have been emailed and must be submitted by the set date on the nomination form.

Recently Steve Begg who is our GMW Liaison Officer and other committee members have been working toward meeting the requirements of our annual facilities audit by Goulburn Murray Water. Each year we are required to adhere to an ever-increasing list of regulations imposed upon us, the majority are ticking boxes, the remainder can become a headache. This time we have been asked to meet additional requirements with regard to our septic system and fire fighting needs. Unfortunately, both these pumps have failed the inspection which is not just inconvenient, but costly to repair and replace, something that cannot be avoided. Once these have been rectified we anticipate the audit will be completed, until next year.

We have submitted a number of applications for grants to assist in funding things such as Club renovations, kitchen upgrade, family/disabled bathroom, upgrade to current bathrooms, new boats for the sailing school and a few minor grants that will assist in some smaller jobs. We have received a small grant from the Victorian Government for some life jackets and thermal blankets. Grant applications are a very specialised field, most require obtaining quotes, sourcing providers and a great deal of time in preparation by those involved.

Where I live is an area that is nearby to the Eppalock catchment. During the past month we have had some downpours and at one stage had 1” in a 24 hour period. Hopefully some of this will have found it‟s way into the . We could certainly use a lot more over the winter to replenish the lake for next season.

Our opening day next season will be incorporating the “Back to Bendigo” Sailfish regatta. This event is expected to be well supported by Sailfish fanatics and I‟m sure a delight to our very own Jack Carroll. Further information to come on this special event.

Unfortunately, our Meat Tasting night was cancelled due to lack of numbers/support. Such a shame as this event provided potential for the club to earn $1000 just for enjoying ourselves. Thanks to Steve Begg who worked hard to get this off the ground. Hopefully we will have another opportunity to participate with the necessary numbers.

Ron Mason and some of our kind members have been working hard at the club fortnightly as a group to continue to catch up on the maintenance requirements, things that just can‟t be covered by one person or just at a working bee. Thank you for your ongoing contribution to the club.

Remember, our AGM is on Saturday 2 June, bring a plate to share. We welcome your family and friends to cheer on our award winners.

Thanks all, for another great season.

Andrea.

The Working Bee scheduled for Wednesday 16th May has been cancelled. The next Working Bee will be Wednesday 30th May.

Mainsheet 538 4 May, 2018

We’ve had a terrible run with water pumps lately. First the backup septic well pump was found to be not working during our annual GMW audit. The emergency siren/light was also not working due to a missing float switch. A replacement pump has been purchased and will be fitted along with the replacement float switch in time for compliance with our GMW lease obligations.

The second pump issue involved the water pump that services our fire hose reels. The lock nut holding the induction impeller worked its way loose and caused significant damage to the drive shaft and it was cheaper to replace the pump due to the high cost of repairing the shaft. The committee will take this opportunity to look at our total water delivery systems to see whether there is a more efficient way of servicing our water needs. This is a difficult task because of the lack of detail on where the various underground water pipes are.

The first midweek working bee was a great success, not only did we achieve a significant clean-up it was a great opportunity to firm up our off water friendships over a coffee and cake at smoko. We’ll try and have regular working bees during the off season to help give us a flying start to next season. The working bee scheduled for Wednesday the 16th has had to be cancelled, the next one is scheduled for 30th May. All welcome.

The committee are continuously looking at ways of reducing our power usage. If any members have thoughts on this matter please let someone on the committee know, together we’ll be able to come up with a strategy to drive down this significant drag on our finances. Capt’n Ron.

As always it would be appreciated if any maintenance requests come via the maintenance request form located on the Club’s Web page.

Bull Sheet

The old saying „still waters run deep‟ is simply not true. The still waters of Lake Tyers (which has had no ocean connection for a couple of years) are shallow! So much so that when our little cruising group (Ken and Jenny (Shamrock), Graeme and Julie (Why so Serious), Rob and Judy (Sea Sharp), and Brian and Merilyn (Guv’ner General) ventured forth on 21st April this year, we were soon stranded on sandbars. To make matters worse, our departure from the jetty near Lake Tyers Beach was fraught with difficulty due to side winds. The Guv’ner General, towing a canoe as tender, soon found that the tethered canoe, with outrigger, was like a rabid dog on a long chain. After sliding over a large marker buoy and becoming airborne, it then proceeded to crash into Shamrock. After receiving a gentle admonition from our mild-mannered and courteous cruise captain, the Guv’ner General subsequently noticed that all other boats were giving it a very wide berth. Despite the wind, which might have proved useful for sailing, we had earlier decided not to bring our masts. This was a wise decision as the Lake narrows down very quickly and, even in its broader sections, is too shallow for the deployment of keels.

After being advised to closely follow the channel markers, we found ourselves, on the first night, boxed into a dead-end, with only a fishing jetty as moorings. However, it was a beautiful evening with an immense, starry night sky. After the customary “happy hour” we retired with thoughts of the journey ahead.

Early next morning, Brian set forth for a „constitutional‟ paddle in his canoe and after a leisurely breakfast and mandatory walk with the dog (yes, Paddy came along for the trip) we untethered the boats and set forth again. The cruise captain, having consulted his charts, announced that he had been led off course by the Guv’ner General (not an infrequent occurrence) and he then proceeded to take the lead. This proved most fortunate for the rest of us, as we could receive some advance warning of shallow water ahead when Shamrock came to a standstill. This was not always a successful ploy however and all but Sea Sharp suffered the indignity of running aground.

Mainsheet 538 8 May, 2018

We proceeded up the Nowa Nowa arm of the lake for several kilometres until a shallow sandbar prevented us from any further exploration. During this part of the journey, both Shamrock and Guv’ner General ran aground. The Guv’ner, in particular, experienced great difficulty in freeing itself and, with a show of excessive gallantry, Why So Serious came to the rescue and promptly came to the same end. Undaunted, however, the captain of Why So Serious managed to free his boat and attach a line to the Guv’ner. After much motor revving, the Guv’ner was at last pulled free, amidst cheers (mainly from Why So Serious). The captain of the rescue boat then immediately demanded that a medal be struck in his honour.

By then it was time for „happy hour” and we found a very agreeable spot on the shore for a campfire, drinks and nibbles and „boat talk‟. One of the most noticeable aspects of the trip was the general lack of wildlife. On most of our trips we are accustomed to waking to the morning chorus of the birds, to many and varied waterbirds, and other creatures. At Lake Tyers however, apart from a few waterbirds – swans and ducks mainly, there was very little wildlife in evidence.

It was now time to explore the Toorloo arm of the Lake but again, shallow water prevented us from going more than a kilometre or two. By now, we were all weary and it was time to pull in to the shore for the day. Again, a very pleasant spot was found and a campfire set up. The canoe was again deployed, this time with a sail. Even the captain and crew of Shamrock were persuaded to take a paddle in the canoe. To add to the general air of relaxation, the captain of Why So Serious produced his guitar and gave the assembled group some pleasing musical entertainment. Not to be outdone (and still smarting from the indignity of requiring a rescue from Why So Serious), the captain of the Guv’ner then produced HIS guitar and attempted (unsuccessfully) a rendition of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.

The next morning, a decision was made to head for home since further navigation of the Lake was not possible. Fortunately, we arrived back at the boat ramp while weather conditions were very mild – almost no wind. The boats were loaded onto trailers with few problems and we all set out for home.

A very pleasant trip but somewhat marred by lack of water depth. We might consider a re- visit when the lake has once again risen after rains and breached the ocean sandbar. Brian Coman
