DOHA: Ed Vaizey MP, the UK Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, visited the Williams Technology Centre (WTCQ) in Qatar’s Science and Technology Park (QSTP) yesterday as part of the recently announced Qatar-UK 2013 Year of Culture. Ed Vaizey chose to visit the Qatari home of Williams Advanced Engineering to highlight the already strong ties between Qatar and British organisations such as Williams. Williams established the WTCQ in 2009 and has been engaged in a number of research and develop- ment projects that have the potential to make a signifi- cant difference to Qatar’s infrastructure and way of life. This includes the development of hybrid flywheel technol- ogy for public transport applications such as trams and metros, and road safety simulators to help tackle Qatar’s well known road safety issues. Both projects have seen Williams partner with Qatari companies to bring Formula One based technology to market. THE PENINSULA TUESDAY 20 NOVEMBER 2012 HOME www.thepeninsulaqatar.com 05

Gulf English School holds fund raising for cancer

DOHA: The Gulf English School’s Charity Action Team (CHAT), led by supervisor Ulrike Jones and President Haya Al Waleed Al Thani, launched a fund- raising bake sale in the Primary and Secondary school to help raise awareness for cancer. Established in 2009 by caring students, who are deter- mined to make a change towards the lives of the less- fortunate, CHAT is a non-profit charity team that has had many successes in fundraising for global and local charities. This year CHAT decided to host weekly fun- draising events throughout the whole month of October. Starting off with a ‘non-uniform day’ throughout the infant unit to high school, students were highly encour- aged to wear pink or blue. Assemblies in all sections of the school were aimed at teaching the students all about the illness and the success doctors and scientists are now achieving in the battle against cancer. The event reached new limits and was an enormous success for the school. CHAT ended the month with the sale of all and every- thing that is pink! Bracelets, teddy bears, T-Shirts and a fashion show for the girls and a football tournament for the boys; raising a total of QR27,990.

It is a joint project by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and COP18/CMP8. The project includes a one-day educational session, a ‘Master Class’ seminar, on COP18/CMP8 given by a report-writer from IISD’s Earth Negotiations Bulletin. The class will give a full background on COP conferences. Topics include: The science behind the climate change negotiations, the background to the process, the impor- tant meetings and agreements, the composition and func- tions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the participating bodies, important collaborations, the current status of the nego- tiating process, potential challenges for Doha, expected outcomes, the historic significance of COP18. The session will take place at 9am in HBKU Student Centre cinema at Education City, and it will be open to all those who are interested in environmental issues and global policy discussions. This event is also an opportu- nity to potentially meet members of local organisations focused on environmental issues and to learn how to get involved with the environmental movement. Participation is free. Those interested have been asked to confirm their participation by email at [email protected] Gulf Helicopters signs deal with QP

DOHA: Gulf Helicopters Company (GHC) , subsidiary of gulf international services, has signed a contract with Qatar Petroleum to provide air ambulance serv- ice. The five-year contract by QP is mainly meant for providing helicopters for emergency medical services (HEMS) coverage in support of the offshore oil and gas industry in Qatar, a Qatar Exchange statement said. Operating under the call sign “QP MED” the serv- ice has similarities with GHC’s successful LifeFlight (onshore) HEMS program, which is currently entering its fifth year of service and has already recorded over 1900 mission launched to date. On 15 June 2012, GHC has entered into service two upgraded Bell 412 aircraft, which are equipped to “Advance Life Support” standards and are manned by emergency medical personnel from QP’s Medical Service Department. The Bell 412 EP type was selected due to its ruggedness reliability and capability to operate in more restrictive decks. The two aircrafts are equipped with multi-patient medical interiors and they are fitted with the Rescue Hoist. Mohamed Al Mohannadi, Chief Executive of Gulf Helicopters Company, said: “This new air ambulance service is a vital safeguard to our offshore community, and the new contract provides for significant upgrades in response time and overall capabilities, ensuring that we can provide the highest quality and service standards to meet all emergency medical requirements, with signifi- cant enhancement to patient care in transport”. Three hunger strikers were hospitalised at the weekend, one of whom needed to have his stomach operated on, before being returned to prison. “Other people will die: the situation of the detain- ees is really catastrophic,” said another lawyer, Seif Eddine Makhlouf, speak- ing on radio Mosaique FM. The justice ministry could not immediately be reached for comment on the latest information, after confirm- ing on Saturday that 56 Tunisian prisoners were on hunger strike, with some having gone without food for more than a month. It had said three prison- ers were in a “worrying” condition. Activists are demanding their release, but the justice ministry has said it cannot free them, with any such decision to be taken by those judges responsible for their each individual case. Zagrouba said the detainees on hunger strike had all been arrested in 2011 and 2012 over a wave of attacks blamed on Tunisia’s hardline Salafists that has rocked the country since last year’s revolution. He said the targets of those attacks included the Nessma TV channel, an art exhibition in a Tunis sub- urb and the US embassy, which was stormed by Islamists on September 14. The other side Whoever started the war must end it. Quote of For regional prosperity Khaled Meshaal the day Hamas Leader HE series of important meetings the Association of Southeast Asian Nations is holding in the Cambodian capital of Phnom TPenh over the next few days present a good opportunity for the regional bloc to deepen understanding and forge cooperation with its partners from inside and outside the region, China included. With the world economic recovery dragging its feet and facing greater uncertainties, ASEAN-led initiatives could play a vital role in coordinating regional efforts to drive economic development and maintain peace and stability in the region. The 10-member grouping has vowed to realize an ASEAN economic community in 2015, and it is mulling over a new economic partner- ship with six of its dialogue partners that would establish the world’s largest economic bloc. There is every reason for the countries concerned to focus their attention on these agendas, and ASEAN’s partners from inside and outside the region should also make due contributions in this regard, as they too have a stake in the development of South East Asia. China will again demonstrate its commitment to the regional bloc’s prosperity with concrete actions, and it is looking forward to enhanc- ing its cooperation with ASEAN countries in areas such as finance, energy, education, public health, disaster control and connectivity during this week’s meetings. Premier Wen Jiabao is scheduled to join his ASEAN counterparts, along with US President Barack Obama, for the two-day East Asia Summit starting on Monday. China will also participate in the 10+1 (ASEAN plus China) and 10+3 (ASEAN plus China, Japan and Republic of Korea) meetings. Prior to the meetings in Phnom Penh, Beijing again made it clear that it takes an open attitude to the formulation of a code of conduct in the South China Sea. But for a complicated issue like the South China Sea, it is common sense that consensus should be reached before claimant parties sit down at the negotiating table to draw up the code of conduct, and that requires time and patience. And as the disputes are only between a few ASEAN members and China, China is fully justified in insisting on the issue being solved within the China-ASEAN framework. Those gathering in Phnom Penh should show wisdom and not let the issue cloud their discussions. Otherwise, it will be all too easy to damage the positive momentum of regional development and cooperation, which is the real goal of these meetings.
