The Wells and the Stokes before they found The Island.

This is a story we hear often here on The Island, but with a twist. An out of town couple visits and can’t wait to move here so they move quickly to buy a house. This week’s Islanders of the Week fit that mold, they bought a house they had never seen, but the twist…their good friends picked it out for them. It all started when John and Millie Stokes moved to The Island from Orange County, California a short while back and longtime friends and Orange County neighbors Doug and Stacey Wells came to visit in the last week of July. They stayed six days and by the time they left they had decided to move here. After traveling back to California they found four houses they liked and asked John and Millie to take a look for them. The Stokes found the one they thought was the best choice, which was on Cumana, and, sight unseen, Doug and The Wells arrive home. Stacey bought it long distance from California. This shot of them was taken in October when they saw their new house for the first time as they were moving in. They put a lot of trust in the Stokes and now are happy new Islanders. Doug is considering a run at Mr. Dick’s longstanding record for not going OTB which is 432 days. That is a long time but that record could be in jeopardy when the new IGA opens in 2019 eliminating the last good excuse for leaving The Island. For making the island their new home and trusting their friends, we proudly make Doug and Stacey our Islanders of the Week. Welcome to The Island you guys! A close examination of the photo will note that the site of the construction is on the south side of the parking lot, rather than the north which is where the facilities were ultimately and currently located. As the story goes the work crews who arrived at the scene with blueprints in tow mistook the seawall for Windward Avenue on the plans and, looking at them upside down, began clearing land and setting cement forms on the south side of the property, nearest the Portofino condos. The curbs were already poured when Portofino residents pointed out that the restrooms were supposed to be on the opposite side of the parking lot the crew rotated the plans 180 degrees and the problem was solved. In case you have ever wondered why there is a grassy patch on the south side of the parking lot along the seawall instead of more parking spaces, well, now the mystery is solved.
