Nellie Nutter is 8 months old and there are 5 Johnson children between ages 4 - 16.

There was a split in the family between the Nutter children and the Johsons, also between Jane and Tom and her older children. Jane was quite a bit older than Tom and if you look at the census she keeps getting younger which made it difficult to find her. Jane came from London and we lost contact with that branch of

26 the family until I made contact with Duncan McMillan a few months ago. He is a decendent of her sister Ellen Youngman and James Ewin. I also did not put in my tree that Mary Anne Holgate's father was called William Hargreaves Holgate and I think that she and Thomas Nutter 1836 were second cousins but I have not been able to confirm that. Susan Park (GR)

Notes for JANE JOHNSON: 1881 Cotton winder aged 21, married to Luther Johnson & living at 20, Earl Street, Burnley (St. Andrews District). Albert E. is 8 months old.

1889 Luther died aged 30. His death was registered in Bury. The family must have been living in as William H. was born there.

1891 Jane is a 29 year old widow with 4 children, living back in Burnley, at 1, Abbey Street, Burnley (Stoneyholme district). She is a cotton winder, originally from London.

1901 Jane (38) is now married to Tom Nutter (1899) and they have a daughter Nellie aged 8 months. She also has 5 Johnson children living with them, the last one having been born in 1897! If Luther died in 1889, it seems likely that Tom fathered Wilfred (1894) & Miriam (1897). Susan Park (Tom's gt. g'daughter) says that Miriam was known as Miriam Nutter and that her, Wilfred & Nellie were all very close.

As long as a widow did not remarry any children had to have the mother's married name. You could not register a child under its natural father's name, even if the couple were living together.
