Usavjpn-Program.Pdf TABLE OF CONTENTS Letter from the President 2 United States Roster 6-7 Japan Roster 9-10 ‘Til the Motor Stops 13 An American Sporting Experience 22 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to StubHub Center for the USA Eagles’ opening game of the 2014 Pacific Nations Cup tournament and a special welcome to our friends from Japan, one of the form teams in this year’s event arriving in Los Angeles on the back of a strong performance in Canada last weekend, winning 34-25. Now coached by former Wallaby Coach Eddie Jones, we know that the team will be well prepared and dis- ciplined playing with great speed and intensity. Last weekend the Eagles played Scotland in Houston in front of a 20,000 passionate home crowd, but despite their support the Eagles lost 22-6 in a scrappy game that never quite measured up to the pre-match hype. The Eagles certainly put in a gritty performance and the game could have gone either way before a late Scotland try sealed the game in Scotland’s favor. The Eagles will be looking to bounce back tonight, learning lessons from Houston and converting them into actions this evening against Japan. In just over 12 months at the Rugby World Cup, the Eagles will meet both Japan and Scotland in our group, so this month we are all getting an opportunity to size up the opposition. The Eagles finished the 2013 season with strong wins in Europe against Georgia and Russia, in the spring they beat Uruguay to qualify for the 2015 Rugby World Cup and this month they have three home games to continue their development as a team. Coach Mike Tolkin and his staff have already started to shape their Rugby World Cup squad, there is an increasing amount of competition within the squad for places and this will certainly prove a motivating factor for tonight’s game for the Eagles. In the USA the game of rugby is growing at pace with vibrant youth programs starting to develop quality players who are making their way into our National All-American High School and Collegiate teams. This has all been made pos- sible by the commitment of our coaches and administrators who commit hours and hours of their time to support the development of these young players. In Southern California we have one of the strongest Youth programs in the country and I know many of them will be attending their first Eagles game today. I would like to give them a special welcome and hope they leave today’s game dreaming of playing for the Eagles in the future. Have a great evening and may the best team win! Go Eagles! • The Influence of Foreign Players on the Transformation of Japanese Rugby Over the Last Three Decades
The influence of foreign players on the transformation of Japanese rugby over the last three decades A Thesis Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree of Master ofArts in Sociology in the University of Canterbury By Hiroshi Sakata University of Canterbury 2004 8*7 7~e'~f6!lt7)I::tJ6I:: This thesis aims to contribute to the further development ofJapanese rugby. ABSTRACT This thesis explores the influence of foreign players on the transformation of Japanese rugby over the last three decades. Foreign players first had an impact in company league teams and, more latterly, have also played with distinction in the Japanese national team. Using historical materials and interview data with players, coaches and administrators, I show how the game of rugby in Japan has developed, and consider aspects of the relationship between migrant players and the Japanese game. I follow the actors through the shift from the amateur to the professional period, and describe the impact on Japanese rugby of foreign players and coaches. In the first chapter, I describe the establishment and historical development path of rugby in Japan. The game has incorporated aspects of Japanese styles of organisation, playing techniques and philosophies. Until the 1980s, high school and university rugby was the most popular form of the game, but after then, rapidly-developing company rugby became the predominant domestic form of the game. The company game's latest iteration, launched in 2003, is the Top League, and in it, labour relations have become more professional. Chapter Two describes the influence of foreign players in company teams, looking in particular at migration trends, eligibility rules and labour relations.

  • Weekly News Digest 産経オンライン英会話 ニュースディスカッション教材
Weekly News Digest 産経オンライン英会話 ニュースディスカッション教材 Meet Japan's 2019 Rugby World Cup Juggernaut The Japan Rugby Football Union announced on Thursday, August 29, the 31-man roster (18 forwards, 13 backs) for a national team that is determined to advance to the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final 8 for the first time in history. The quadrennial tournament is being held in Japan this autumn. Nicknamed the “Cherry Blossoms,” Japan's squad will be a mixture of veterans and new faces. But probably its most unique characteristic is that a record-breaking 15 of the 31 team members were born abroad. The hope is that diversity will become Japan's ticket to the top ranks of the rugby world. Among the best known places are captain and flanker Michael Leitch, 38-year-old Luke Thompson (who has appeared in four straight World Cups), and Fumiaki Tanaka (three straight World Cups). “Foreign players are going to continue to be absolutely essential for Japanese rugby, and the public understands that,” Leitch said on August 18 at the Japanese team's training camp in Abashiri, Hokkaido. According to the international rugby regulations, even if a player is not native-born, if he has lived in a country for 36 months continuously and fulfills certain other prerequisites, he is qualified to represent the country in international competition. Leitch, a native of New Zealand, first played for Japan in the 2011 World Cup, when he was one of 10 foreign-born players. He remembers many Japanese fans grumbling that there were “too many foreigners” on the national team.
