Millions of Muslim women and girls across the globe choose to cover their hair and wear a hijab for religious reasons. For French Muslims, that may be about to change. On Tuesday, March 30, the French Parliament voted to ban the wearing of the hijab for girls under the age of 18 in public places, and for Muslim mothers who wear the hijab to not be able to accompany their children on school trips. Outrage over the decision hit and has sparked massive criticism over the French Senate’s decision to ban the hijab. The ban was introduced as part of the Separatism Bill, a bill that “plans to crack down on online and foreign funding of religious groups.” According to EuroNews, “Officially named the draft bill ‘reinforcing republican principles,’ the legislation aims to give the country the means to fight Islamic radicalism but has been criticized for stigmatizing the Muslim Community.” For the ban to pass into law, it must be confirmed by the French National Assembly.
