5. Virginia Tech (10-4): Hokies probably didn’t need to have Duke and Virginia so early on the conference schedule, but they’ll have rematches -- whether they want them or not.

6. Notre Dame (10-4): Irish had all they could handle in Syracuse, but they pulled out a road victory by one point. So they’ll take that amid a stretch with three road games across their first four conference assignments.

7. Georgia Tech (7-7): The Yellow Jackets look like the real deal when Jose Alvarado is healthy and on the court. He inflicted his version of pain on Tar Heels.

8. N.C. State (10-4): Wolfpack had better hope that was just a strange blunder at Clemson because things had been looking up for the team before that mis-step. Getting leading scorer C.J. Bryce back from a concussion would help.

9. Miami (9-4): Hopefully the Hurricanes can wipe away that loss to Duke and just move on. That might be the best solution.

10. North Carolina (8-6): That was an all-time stinker for the Tar Heels when they missed their first 15 shots from the field against Georgia Tech and never caught up.

11. Boston College (8-6): Eagles had a week off between games against Duke and Vir- ginia. Talk about a change of pace.

Florida (9-4): You can see the confidence rising for sophomore Andrew Nembhard. His development can change the Gators’ trajectory.

6. LSU (9-4): Maybe undervalued; the stat site KenPom.com has the Tigers rated as the conference’s third-best team.

7. Ole Miss (9-4): Fans expected more out of a team that returned four starters. There’s still time for a big second half, though.

8. Mississippi State (9-4): Howland has this team playing tough, even if the results aren’t totally what he wants.

9. Tennessee (8-5): The Vols have balance. Is that enough in the SEC?

10. South Carolina (8-5): AJ Lawson is still getting some NBA buzz. Is he worthy of it?

11. Missouri (8-5): The Tigers have played great defense at times, but they’re in consis- tent on offense.

12. Vanderbilt (8-5): Aaron Nesmith can fill it up — he ranks fifth in the nation in scoring (23.4 ppg).

13. Alabama (7-6): Tide has to weather a tough stretch that includes Kentucky and Auburn.

14. Texas A&M (6-6): Aggies don’t do any- thing well, but they hang around in most games. Don’t be surprised if they pull off a few upsets.
