A group of VMA members went in to Federation Square last month where we set up a stand at the Victo- rian Seniors Exhibition. We gave out brochures to “passers by”, but we must say without much success. It does make me think that the same approach may work with a younger audience, however.

Liz Feldman organised a team from Croydon to participate in the Maroondah “Relay for Life” and managed to raise $555 for Breast Cancer. There were 35 people who ran or walked for the team which was one of 43 at the venue in total. Most of the participants posed for this photo the following Tuesday in their striking blue tops. Given the rainy weather we have had on recent weekends we were very lucky to have beautiful conditions.

Well Done, East Burwood

East Burwood Manager Alan Lucas and his team deserve applause for their initiative on several fronts at their venue. This sign was paid for by sponsors - Snooze - and is there for all potential new members to see. We know that the parents of kids at “Little Aths” has been a good recruiting ground for us and anything we can do to get the message out is a good thing.

Although Croydon Venue will be officially closed over the Christmas period, Masters stalwart Les Clark will be opening the venue and running a restricted program. One thing, Les needs to know the numbers in advance, and if you say you are coming - please come. Members from other venues most welcome. Contact me - I’ll pass it on to Les.

This is Keith Bateman - Blink and you’ll miss him.

Sydney athlete Keith Bateman broke the World Masters record for the M55 3000m on 13th November 2010 with an extraordinary time of 8.56.80. It’s not as if this is a “flash in the pan” either, Keith ran a 4.12.91 1500m a week ear- lier, missing the world record by 0.41 sec. He also ran an M55 Australian Record for the mile in 4.7.30 in October and earlier in the year, before he turned 55 he did a 1.11.54 half marathon. The 3000m record was held by New Zealander Ron Robert- son and had stood since 1997. Keith is an advocate of running barefoot or with minimal support shoes such as Nike Free or Vibram Five Fingers. He is also a coach in the Sydney area and has a web-site www.keithbatemancoaching.com

Great Running by Tony Berry

It doesn’t seem to matter to Tony Berry whether he is running on a tough, hilly course in Truro, England one week or running on a relatively flat course in Melbourne a couple of weeks later. Tony, aged 75, ran an M75 Australian half marathon record of 1hour 37 min. 31 secs. in the Truro half marathon on September 19, and then backed up (and flew over here) to prune nearly another 4 minutes off this time on October 10 in the Melbourne Marathon. His Melbourne time of 1.33.51 ended up being within 4 minutes of the World Record and up until the 12km mark Tony was on track to beat the record, but just couldn’t sustain the pace. In case you can’t read the copy in the above newspaper clipping it says :

Veteran runner Tony Berry made his mark in the Truro Half Marathon on Sunday, setting the second fastest M75 time ever in the U.K. The 75 year-old Cornishman, who has lived in Australia for the past 40 years, finished in 97m 31secs. coming 97th. Berry, who runs for Truro Running Club and Victorian Masters in Australia, had set out to break the U.K. record having already taken partin the Indian Queens Half Marathon and Pro- bus 10k since returning to England earlier this year. However Berry, a former journalist for the West Briton was pleased with his performance. He said ‘‘It was a great day and a great run. I smashed the Australian M75 record by four minutes and set the second fastest M75 time ever in the U.K.” 7

Orr Memorial win to Doncaster

Doncaster Masters’ athletes honoured one of the founders of their venue when they won the inter-venue final of the Doug Orr Memorial Half-Mile Handicap at East Burwood on the lastThursday in October. Orr and another East Burwood stalwart, the late John Gosbell, were the prime movers in getting Masters’ athletics going at Doncaster in 1996. Both have since passed on but are remembered in feature events named in their honour and run annually at East Burwood. Doncaster has been a regular participant in the Orr Memorial since its inception eight years ago but has often struggled to put together a team of five good middle distance runners. On several occasions they have been narrowly beaten for the perpetual shield although they did win 2 years ago with a bit of outside help. This time, however, all Doncaster’s runners performed at their top with the result that they scored by a comfortable margin, winning with the lowest aggregate of 30 points from Croydon (43) and East Burwood (47). Points are calculated according to the runners’ finishing positions with the lowest total winning.

In perfect conditions almost all runners were faster than any of their heat or venue final times. The biggest improver and handicap winner was Terry Dunn (73) of Croydon with a time of 3.22 followed by Graham Walter (52) 2.34 and David McConnell (58) 2.31 both from Doncaster. Fastest time and 4th place went to East Burwood runner Craig Harris with a creditable 2m 11s. Full Results below

8 “NEIGHBOURS NIGHT” AT COBURG VENUE – 18/11/10 QUADRELLA FOR COLLINGWOOD

This was the motivation provided by Team Manager, Keith Howden, as a spur to the six teams representing the Collingwood Masters in the “Barb Dalgleish” 4 x 200m Relay, the feature event at the seventh annual Neighbours Night at the Coburg Venue. With many runners sidelined, including Keith himself, due to illness, injury or other commitments, Collingwood’s recent dominance appeared to be under threat. The three heats were run in fine but chilly conditions with Collingwood “Mariners”, Doncaster Gold and Collingwood “Magistrates” advancing to the final joined by Aberfeldie No.1, Collingwood Matadors and The Dalgleish Family No.1 qualifying with the fastest losing times. The night’s big improvers Aberfeldie No.1, and the consistent Doncaster Gold looked to be a threat to the “Mariners” being only a couple of seconds away from the classy Mariners team. However, this year was to be the “year of the Magpie” with Collingwood Mariners coasting home from compatriots The Matadors and Aberfeldie No.1.

The Final – Barb Dalgleish Memorial 4 x 200m Relay – Time m/s 1st Collingwood Mariners Gerard Adrien, Danny Hecker, Fiona Harper, John Gleason 1.50.21 2nd Collingwood Matadors Ian McLeod, Tony Dell, Donna Smith, Sean Pierce 1.56.11 3rd Aberfeldie No.1 John White, Mark Symons, Cathy Orelli, Warren Burke 1.57.53 4th Doncaster Gold David McConnell, Kevin Bates, Angela Wilde, John Browne 1.57.97 5th Collingwood Magistrates Bernie Leddin, Peter Neale, Kylie Doyle, Shane Derby 2.02.21 6th Dalgleish Family No.1 Damian Dalgleish, Adrian Dalgleish, Lisa Heath, Allan Harbinson 2.02.56

A highlight of the evening was the emergence of Aberfeldie with their three teams being very competitive and the third placing in the final their best ever result. Coburg gained some consolation with their “Young Guns” combination winning the “All-Comers Relay” in the smart time of 1.44.95. Nev Wilson, Coburg Venue Manager, welcomed visitors and thanked Tom Dalgleish and the Dalgleish Family for their continued support in the event. Peter Dalgleish expressed the family’s appreciation of the continued hosting and organization by the Coburg members of the now time- honoured event. Peter presented the winning team with the Perpetual Trophy and individual Certificates of Achievement. Responding, Gerard Adrien - Captain of the Mariners - paid tribute to the hard work that Keith Howden had undertaken in preparing the Collingwood teams. This was a fitting introduction to the presentation made by Tony Bradford of a Victorian Masters Award to Keith for his achievement in sprinting at national and inter-national level during the year. Coburg Management Committee member, Bernie Goggin, thanked the Coburg Venue members for their help with the night’s program with particular reference to Mal Owen (Starter), and to Heather Collyer and Debbie Canal for the preparation of the splendid supper. Bernie also thanked the members and officials of our visiting clubs for volunteering their help during the evening.

Shirley Young article by Nina Field

A few hours before VMA legend, Shirley Young, ran her astonishing record-shattering 24 hour run at Coburg as a 70 year old in April 2000, she discovered a nasty blister on her little toe. The seam on a new pair of socks was the culprit and her husband and coach, Ron Young, rummaged around in his bag and found a little foam toe- separator to ease the discomfort. A little over an hour into the run, Shirl was off the track in agony. That little piece of foam had disintegrated, rubbing half her skin off and leaving her with a shoe full of blood. Ron taped her up as best he could and convinced her not to give it away yet, but to go out and “just walk for a bit”. By the back straight, Shirl was running again and she went on to complete a record 176.8km in the 24 hours for W70, in a run that also set 4 world records along the way (100 mile, 100 k, 12 hours and 24 hours). Only the first two male finishers actually managed to clock up more kilometres than her. This was an ultra-run feat that many think will simply not be matched and earned her the nick-name among ultra-runners of “the Living Legend”. Yet, this is just one aspect of Shirl’s impressive CV of running, spanning more than thirty years. Shirl has set 22 world records, has 3 Australian Open 100km championships (won in her late 60s and early 70s), set more than 50 Australian Masters’ and ultra age-group records and has more medals and trophies than any self- respecting pool-room could accommodate. She won gold in the World Masters’ W55 marathon in Melbourne in 1987, bronze in Eugene marathon in 1989 and in 2001, in Brisbane, she won gold in W70 5km and W70 10km and silver in W70 marathon and W70 cross country. At the Oceania Games in Geelong in 2002, Shirl won 4 gold medals in the W70 1500m, 5000m, 8km cross country and the half marathon. Shirl was a late convert to running. She took it up in 1977, at age 47, at the urging of her super-fit and talented athletic family. (Her daughter, Lorraine Jachno, was a world-class race walker, son-in-law, Andrew Jachno, was a three-time Olympian walker and Ron himself was no slouch as a middle-distance runner and steeplechaser, including making the training squad for Melbourne Olympics in 1956 as 4th ranked Australian.) Shirl’s daughter, Lorraine, insisted one morning that she join her husband and three kids on a ritual morning run along the beach at Tidal River - instead of just holding the towels. From those runs along the beach - where Shirley couldn’t actually make it the whole way, she quickly developed into a formidable running machine. Shirl joined St Stephen’s Women’s Athletics Club and the Vic Vets Women’s Club later that same year and began forging the strong bonds and friendships among fellow runners that have brought such joy to her life and the lives of others, ever since. She has competed at the Collingwood venue of the Victorian Masters since its very first week in 1978. . At Collingwood, Shirl has been an inspiration and role model to so many fellow runners over the years, particularly women. A year after she first took up running, Shirl decided to enter the inaugural Melbourne Marathon in 1978. She finished her first marathon in 3 hours 50 mins and 31 seconds, the 2nd woman over 40 to cross the line. When her husband Ron found her after the race, sitting on a stretcher, Shirl declared “I am never doing one of those again!” “And now it’s 72 and 50 odd ultra marathons later,” Ron chuckles. Shirl went on to become the only woman to complete all 30 Melbourne Marathons until 2007, putting her amongst an elite set of 13 runners, known as the Spartan Legends, who had completed every Melbourne marathon to that year. Her best marathon time was 3 hours 18 minutes and 38 seconds, clocked up in 1987 as a 57 year old. The way Ron sees it, Shirl was “never the fastest runner” over the shorter distances, but after she’d been going for awhile she hit the “happy zone” and could just go on and on running at exactly the same pace for hours. Ron reckons she didn’t go out to break all those records, but if she got into a run when she was the only one in the age group she would say to Ron “I’m just going to go out there and try to beat some of those young ones.” And, as many a significantly younger (and often male) runner’s ego can attest, most of the time - she did! Shirl was made a life member of St Stephen’s and the Spartans in 2006. In June 2002, when her doctor told her she had Alzheimer’s, Shirl went very quiet. After a few moments, her doctor asked her if she was alright - could she handle the diagnosis? She replied: “I’ll be alright, as long as you don’t say I have to give up running.” To the contrary, her doctor told her that the more active she could be the better it would be, although he did want her to stop doing those “excessive” ultras. She had to cut back to just the 6 hour, 50km, marathons and other “short stuff.” Shirl was always very upfront about her disease and for many years could be heard to cheerily introducing herself to people at the track with a: “Do I know you? Don’t mind me, I’ve got Alzheimer’s and I don’t remember things…but I love my running.” 11

V.M.A. Legend No.4 - Shirley Young With Ron by her side, Shirl was able to go on running right through to the end of 2007. Eight weeks before the 30th Melbourne Marathon in 2007, Shirl had a fall and broke two ribs. Because she wasn’t able to run for so many weeks, the Alzheimer’s took over and she just lost “all commitment and all motivation”, according to Ron. She only started back running a fortnight before the marathon was due to start, down at the familiar territory of the track at Collingwood. That night she couldn’t complete the 3000m because she was too sore. But nobody, including Ron, had the heart to tell her she wasn’t going to run in the marathon. They figured they would just have to let her enter and pick her up after 10km or so. But Shirl ran and completed her 30th Melbourne marathon, with a little help from her Spartan Legend friend, Peter Battrick who ran for the whole 6 and a half hours with her so that they could cross the line together. Others joined her along the way and her incredible courage and tenacity in the face of the challenge of Alzheimer’s was covered by the 7.30 Report. Ron credits the friendships forged among the running community for supporting him through the journey, too. That and a good sense of humour. In 2007, the 7.30 Report had asked Ron if they could get some footage of him acting as her support crew during the 30th marathon by handing Shirl a drink. So, as the runners turned back from Marine Parade on to the Esplanade, Ron handed her the drink in front of the cameras and asked her: “Anything else you want?” Shirl answered: “Yeah, drop dead.” Shirl and Ron also tried to run the 31st Melbourne marathon together in 2008. Despite a distinct lack of training by either of them (Shirl wasn’t training much at all and Ron had not done a marathon for six years), the incredible running pair made it to the 33km mark before hamstring problems got the better of both of them and a St John’s Ambulance Officer said Shirl’s blood pressure was too low to continue. As Shirl’s running training dropped off after the fall she had in 2007, she began wandering around the neighbourhood - sometimes going missing for hours and ending up half a suburb away. It went on for some time, until Ron and the doctors worked out that after living such an active life she needed more to keep her mind and body occupied during the day. So, she started walking with a neighbour and her dog, went back to the gym and started spending two days at an occupational day-care. And, of course, she kept going to the track every Tuesday night at Collingwood where the community of runners still made her feel at home each week. Shirl has spent most of the past couple of years walking at Collingwood, rather than running, but then one night her regular walking buddies were all away. “Where’s my friend?” she asked Ron. When he answered that she was “not here tonight” Shirl thought for a minute, then replied: “I think I’ll go out jogging, then.” After she went around the track once, she called to Ron and Tony “Rocket” Williams who were doing the timing: “Have I done one lap yet?” Rocket called back: “When you come around again it will be one lap, Shirl.” So she ran around again, and asked the same question and received the same answer. She did seven laps that night. And she’s been running laps at the track ever since. Shirl used to say she would run a marathon when she was 100. She may not quite be up for that just yet, but it’s great to see “the Living Legend” enjoying her running again.

Go Shirl! 12

V.M.A. Legend No.4 - Shirley Young This is page 2 of a document prepared by Ron Young listing Shirley’s achievements. I will ask Ralph to put it on the website. 13

Happy hippies at Pan Pacs On face value there was nothing particularly unusual about the results of the 300 and 800 metres in the Men’s 65-69 division of the Pan Pacific Masters’ Championships held at the Gold Coast in early November. Neville McIntyre, from Queensland, and Peter Sandery, from South Australia – both World Masters’ Championship gold medalists – won the events, as would have been expected by 99 per cent of those watching from the grandstand. But what was not apparent from that vantage point was that the minor placegetters in each event provided what may well have been a ‘first’ in Masters Athletics in Australia. The two, who filled the placings in both events, had three artificial hips between them…! Queenslander Don Burtt, 65, provided the major contribution with two, while Victorian representative Richard Trembath, 68, had one. Burtt finished second in the 300 with Trembath third, while the positions were reversed in the 800. Burtt had both hips replaced in two operations five weeks apart at the end of 2007 while Trembath had his left hip replaced in July of last year. While Burtt has been competing for some time, Trembath was making his comeback to Championship competition although he has been running at venue level at Doncaster and Burwood for the past few months. While Burtt says his biggest problem these days is getting around the bends, he was still able to run a creditable 48.16 seconds for the 300 metres despite being easily beaten by McIntyre (45.82). Trembath said he had had to back off from doing speed work in the final stages of his preparation for the competition, principally because of soft tissue problems in the area of his ‘good’ hip, caused by the fact there is still some minor imbalance which shows up when he sprints. Despite this, however, his time of 2m 36.92s for the 800 metres was four seconds faster than he ran in winning the Victorian Masters’ Championship in the same age-division in early 2009. While Trembath went home with three medals, Doncaster’s other representatives, Matt Scholes and Tony Keeghan, were left lamenting what might have been. Scholes strained a hamstring in his first event, the 800, and had to abandon his campaign while Keeghan turned in good performances in the M50-54 division of both the 400 and 1500 but had to settle for fourth placing in both. Frankston sprinter Bill Carr has been competing successfully for several years with two new hips but was not at the Gold Coast on this occasion. 26

IAAF Masters Athletes of the Year

MARIE KAY AND PETER CROMBIE AWARDED WORLD’S BEST MASTERS ATHLETE’S 2010.

Written By Donna Hiscox

Australian Masters athletes Peter Crombie (NSW) and Marie Kay (QLD) have won the most prestigious award an athlete can receive, they have been named the ‘Best in the World’, 2010. Peter and Marie travelled to Monaco in November to be honoured during the International Athletic Federation Gala. This Gala celebrates the year of Athletics around the world and is the climax of the achievements of the sport each year. Peter and Marie’s selection means that they now join a very elite group of athletes who have been voted as the best in the world. Both athletes have demonstrated over many years outstanding credentials – Peter an exceptional sprinter and Marie an extremely talented all-rounder, the standards both athletes have attained and maintained over several years are absolutely remarkable. This award is a reward for their dedication and commitment to the . This is an outstanding result and great honour for Australian Masters Athletics to have Peter and Marie honoured as ‘BEST IN THE WORLD’ for 2010, congratulations to both well deserving athletes.

VICTORIAN MASTERS ATHLETICS AWARDS NIGHT

The inaugural Awards Night for Victorian Masters Athletics was combined with an evening of Square Dancing on November 7th at St Jude’s Hall Scoresby. For athletes who are nimble of foot and co-ordinated of hand and eye, there were some who “doh-si dohed” instead of forming a “grand chain” in the early part of the evening as well as mixing up left and right arms. However, after a few sets everyone sorted themselves out and went on to become fully involved with the self generated entertainment. Although the attendance numbers were disappointing, it was a function that not only acknowledged the efforts of the recipients, but laid the foundations for a better attended Awards event in 2011. The Committee looks forward to the membership of the Club giving greater support and acknowledgement to their fellow athletes. For the recipients who were unable to make the ceremony they felt honoured to be selected for their award. The Committee would like to thank David Sheehan and Peter Black for all their hard work which they undertook to make the evening so enjoyable.

The plank provides a great warm-up that engages all the muscles of the core: the rectus abdominis, the internal and external obliques, transversus abdominis, the hip flexors, the erector spinae and multifidus.

Begin in the pictured position. Keep your torso straight and rigid and your body in a straight line from ears to toes with no sagging or bending. Hold the position 15-60 seconds while maintaining control.

To increase the difficulty and intensity of this movement, alternate lifting one arm out in front of you while maintaining your posture for 10 seconds and repeating on the other side.

Or even The Side Plank ?

The side plank engages the often-overlooked muscles that help support the core -- the lat- eral stabilizers from the ankle to the shoulder. This is one simple and effective exercise to help increase lateral hip strength and stability and keep the obliques and transverse ab- dominis strong.

Begin in the pictured position and keep your body stiff from head to toe. Hold the position 15-60 seconds while maintaining control, and be sure to do both sides!

To increase the difficulty and intensity of this movement, alternate lifting your top leg up a few inches and holding it for 10 seconds while maintaining your balance.

Yes, I could have got photos of men doing these exercises...... but why ? 31
