8: Photo-finish defeats (neck or less) by Dreadnaught in 45-start flat and jump career. Correction Blame the research department (if we had one). Steeplechase photographer Douglas Lees has attended 40 consecutive runnings of the Maryland Hunt Cup – not 41 as we reported in the May 9 edition. Lees arrived at the 1969 Hunt Cup and set up at the third and 13th fences – he’d heard they were the biggest on the course – and has been there ever since. The Maryland Horse published Lees’ photo of Moonlore clearing the third. Landing Party, ridden by Dr. John R.S. Fisher, won the race that year and started Lees’ streak that reached 40 with Askim this spring. Lees shoots the paddock scene before the race, the action at the third and the 13th and then sprints across Tufton Avenue to the finish line – he didn’t realize that was possible until about 1972. Now That’s A Typo Each year, the Iroquois program reserves a half-page for a photo of the previous year’s winner. The 2008 program featured a shot of 2007 race winner Good Night Shirt skillfully clearing a fence and listed the owner, trainer and jockey. The trouble came in the headline which listed Good Night Shirt as the 2008 Iroquois Steeplechase Winner.
